OHMSS looks very nice in this new digital transfer. It looks a lot smoother, cleaner and deeper in colour than before.
Dirt and debris that was extremely bad on the original disc has now all been eliminated. Compression is much
better with a higher bit-rate making the appearance of the movie look more film like.
However the transfer does have some issues. For some reason the restoration team saw fit to add a
blue tint and darken the film for the opening beach scene making it lose the sunrise look that the filmmakers originally
intended. This is probably the biggest error on Lowry's part. Film restoration is about making the film look like
it did back when it was in theatres and changing the look of the movie to make it look like a newer movie is just wrong.
But the new transfer is far superior to the original so I can recommend it to others. The beach scene is just too bad.

This time I have to say the SE is alot better, they really messed this one up.

Disagree. I think the UE has a much more pleasing image. There's been a lot of debate about the blue filters, but in those caps they look so much richer than the SE counterparts. Supposedly the restorers talked to technicians who worked on the films - so who knows? All that aside: the UE is sharper and has better contrasts.

Clear winner for the UE, as Mark says.

How have you come to that conclusion?

Dear god i thought every one knew that the SE is missing a little bit of footage, not major to the plot but its missing a bit here and there,

Taken from ZetaMinor's quick thoughts:

On Her Majesty's Secret Service

Three instances of missing footage have been fixed:
[Times in brackets refer to the Ultimate Edition discs - these will be different to any NTSC transfer]

A shot of the shadow of a passing cable car has been reinstated to the sequence where Bond's backup, Campbell (Bernard Horsfall), is trying to gain access to Blofeld's lair (it's just after the line "Perhaps you'd like to teach me?") [72'19"]

As Bond and Tracy leave the race-track, the line "I told you that crowd would discourage them" is now delivered over an interior shot of Bond and Tracy in the car. The previous version had it delivered over an exterior shot of the car. [103'58"]

Blofeld's line "Tracy, don't be so proud. Your father's own business is not entirely within the law. His brotherhood also have exotic ways of keeping a closed shop" is no longer truncated after "the law." [116'36"]

Hi MLAM :)
How goes it?

I think the last cap shows that the UE is much better. Look at the red lines outlining the cabin to the right on the original disc.

Although the pre-titles are crap, the blue tint is not near as dark on my TVs then the caps here. But was the Blueness reduced any from the R2's? or do the caps just display the blues darker then the TV's? And is the Stiffness in the shoulder line still in?

And thanks for all the comparisons captainjoe, your work is much appreciated!

The caps are much darker than when I watch them on my TV. I think it's the same as the R2.
Thanks for your support!

Ah i'm same as always realy Grim, how about yourself? :D.

As for the tinting, it seems like it was done to give it more of a dawn/dusk feel, whether its right or not is another matter.

The biggest probelm, well on the R2 SE anyway that the picture is slightly stretched/squashed, I did start a comparison but never quite got round to finishing it off.
