The Ultimate Edition of Goldeneye is a disappointment. While the picture definition and overall appearance is improved, the
entire film has been cropped. There still has not been an official statment as to why this happened so we can only assume
this was a mistake. One possibility that some have pointed out at the HTF is that MGM could've used a print that was intended
to later be pan and scanned for home video and TV broadcasts. Evidence for this is the placement of the titles during the title
sequence. Capture 5 clearly shows that the titles are of a different font and placed on the screen differently for later
panning and scanning. This is a disappointment.
Other than that the picture quality is improved with a better grain structure, a sharper, more defined image with strong
colours. Dirt and lines are non-existant, as with other UEs. I can still recommend this UE disc because of the better overall
picture stability and appearance.

FUCK, the UE is still heavily cropped.

Whomever supervised the framing on that restoration should be booted in the balls until Xmas. What a gigantic fuck-up from a major studio. Yes, the image quality is better; of course, because the SE wasn't that great (too orange and edge-enchanced), but at least it contains ALL the relevant visual information. The fact that this glaring error hasn't been corrected suggests it was done at an early stage and perhaps CAN'T be corrected? It's even worse than A View to a Kill. Of all the films to screw-up they picked a fan favourite. Would anyone have bothered if this was Moonraker? As imperfect as it is I'm keeping my SE. I feel sorry for anyone who got rid on the assumption that it would become obsolete.

It's fuck ups like these that make me lose my stiffy for a fortnight. :x

Don't get the idea that I'm in favor of the cropping. But the print has more depth to it. Also there's less EE and compression artefacts. The cropping was a bad move though. I didn't make that clear in my comparison.

Thanks for posting that cap with the cropping comparison. I was thinking of doing that myself.

Apart from the cropping I have to say I do prefer the UE image. So I know what Joe means.

Any chance you can do Tomorrow Never Dies next?

The UE is awfully cropped (it even bothers me) and looks awful too boot. The SE is sharper.

I just matched up the images and stretched red lines across the SE. It's not 100% accurate to the pixel but it gives a very good idea of what's missing.

Hmm yeah the cropping sucks, but overall the UE is better.

The cropping looks extreme to me, meaning overall I don't see how it can be better (IMO).

I can assure you the image quality is not better on the UE. I had the R1 SE and sold it on E-Bay in anticipation of this UE release. I really wish I'd kept the old version! It was far better.

The screenshots don't really show the problems with the image (apart from the cropping). Yes, there are less compression artefacts on the UE but the UE suffers from massive amounts of aliasing in just about every scene - it makes the image "shimmer" and is not good at all. It doesn't show up in the screen shots though.

If I could still get hold of a R1 SE I would definately re-buy that one for watching the film. It was far better than this "new" effort. Both The Living Daylights & Licence To Kill have much better UE transfers & they're much older films!

Ooh, thanks for that info IM. Some flaws just don't show up on caps which is why it's best to get a second opinion. Luckily I still have my SE. I'd expect you might find some on e-bay from like-minded fans who've sold theirs in anticipation.

Just tick "Worldwide" on the left and "Show Items" to filter those which ship to the UK.

I never noticed the aliasing in the new transfer...
I have to keep an eye out when I watch it next time.
I'll do Live and Let Die tomorrow as I have a lot to do tonight.
