This is the last of the Paramount "catch up" HD-DVD titles to be ported to BD. Why it took them so long is anyone's guess.

Unless I'm mistaken Warner have released all their HD-DVD exclusives on BD, which just leaves Universal of the big studios to release all theirs. Obviously it will take Universal much longer. Then there is of course all the myriad of smaller studio HD-DVDs to re-release, some may take years.

My Fearless BD arrived today and inside is one of those flyers, there's a picture of Gladiator on BD. Fingers crossed it's coming soon.

I'd buy a barebones Gladiator BD. Hopefully it's the Director's Cut, none of this Extended Cut nonsense. Only one scene added anything and it was far from crucial, another scene just repeated what is about to be explained to us in a second anyway.

Unfortunately every second film these days is coming out with flabby extended cuts. Yet in numerous cases genuine director's cuts and uncensored prints are MIA. Fucking Hollywood Marketing Arseholes.

best option for BD is to offer both cuts.i just got King Kong BD and that has both versions on the disc,as does Fearless (3?)Conquest & Battle (Apes) also offer a choice.

Frighteners, Just fast forward thru the new stuff if it bugs you that much, it looks vastly better than the dvd so its a must buy anyway.

Costs to much to put both cuts on many discs, so its a very, very rare thing to do nowadays. I own a fair few HD discs and only a few have the option of new and old versions. Uncut, extended, unrated, directors cut etc.. is the future really, unless you are someone with power like Peter Jackson or Ridley Scott then they have a say.

Yes Fearless has 3 of the cuts:

1. Director's Cut
2. Western Cut
3. PG-13 USA Cut

Universal re-used the yank disc so it incorrectly (in the UK) calls the PG-13 Cut the Theatrical Cut (it's not) and the Western Cut the Unrated Cut (it's rated). Talk about confusing for those who don't know.

I'm perfectly happy with the King Kong Theatrical Cut. I have no problem with the length (it doesn't feel long) but in honesty I wouldn't miss if it were shorter. The Extended Cut adds nothing of value at all.

p.s - I doubt Peter Jackson was the reason why there are now both cuts, possibly but more likely there was no space on the HD-DVD like there is the BD.

The irony is that Jackson makes it clear ON THE DVD that the theatrical cut of The Frighteners is his director's cut... and that the so-called "director's cut" is actually just an extended version he mocked up for fun. Thus there is currently no HD version of Jackson's true director's cut. A perfect example of the kind of insane bullshit studios pull.

Yes correct.

AFAIK there is only one UK DVD and it's the Western cut (aka the Theatrical Cut used throughout the West except America). It's the UK BD with the three cuts.

The Western and PG-13 cuts are virtually the same, only some snips for blood. The DC is obviously the longest one. Universal have released it on DVD in America but not The UK, unless I'm mistaken.

But the UK (western cut) is not the same as what HK got?

There are five cuts I know of--

1. Director's Cut
2. PG-13 Cut
3. Unrated Cut aka International Cut
4. HK Cut
5. Thai Cut

I prefer calling it the Western Cut as it's more specific than International Cut. It is a Western Cut except for America.

The Thai and HK Cuts are the same except the Thai cut has one extra scene (with the Thai kickboxer). These cuts are edited differently to the Western and PG-13 Cuts.

Universal re-used the USA disc in the UK. They just slapped some BBFC logos on the disc. They even went to the bother to submit the PG-13 cut to the BBFC . I guess that was cheaper than mastering a new disc.

Yep all these cuts has just made it stupidly confusing, especially Universal calling the Theatrical Cut on the UK BD when it's in fact the further cut PG-13 cut and calling the UK Theatrical Cut suddenly the Unrated cut, when it's actually rated 15.

Nowhere on the BD case or menus does it say the Unrated cut is in fact the UK theatrical cut. It gets even weirder when you consider the BD and DVD contradict themselves .

Confused yet? .
