Wouldn't it be pretty obvious? Upscaled DVDs never look anywhere HD quality IMO.

as some are saying it isn't and some are saying it is then no,i guess it isn't obvious. dvdtimes reviewer certainly didn't think so.the film didn't look great but then it never has,it was certainly better than the dvd. i imagine any forthcoming fox release in the usa would look better though.

Can a BD be the same as an upscaled DVD?

If that's so: if you have the DVD you have the BD already, right?

Guys, will the UK The Matrix BD be uncut? Am I right in thinking that the HD-DVD is uncut as it was resubmitted, or am I just imagining that?

Yes, pretty much. An Upscaled BD/HD-DVD means it's actually the SD Master but Upscaled then put on the Disc.

Instead of being stored in SD form (i.e - DVD) and the TV Upscaling it. An Upscaled DVD could even look better depending how good the Upscaling chips in the TV/Recording equipment are.

Traffic USA HD-DVD for example is an SD Upscaled transfer. Universal took the SD Master and just upscaled it to 1080p. They then put this on to the HD-DVD.

Correct. All the UK DVDs (Box set or single disc releases) are Cut but the HD-DVD Box set released later is Uncut. This is referring to The Matrix, the sequels have always been uncut. I cannot see Warner now using the Cut master again.

Upscaled DVD won't match upscaled BD, have a look at my GitS: SAC comparisons for an example of the difference. Level of detail is the same but it's still a quality difference as you have much better bitrates and a more efficient codec.

Whether it's worth upgrading I guess depends on a title per title basis though.

Either way, it should not be done, and there should be some kind of legal repercussions for selling a Blu-ray as 1080p when it's simply a standard definition master upscaled. False advertising, or at least misleading advertising.

Especially when Universal put "The look and sound of perfect" on the Traffic cover .

I've not upgraded my Superman films to HD yet. I've been waiting to watch the 3 of them in order before I do that, watching the Superman 2 Richard Donner Cut while I do it.

I'll have to try and track down the new Aussie BD when I do get Superman Returns though. I'm guessing future pressings will have an amended cover. Further confirmation DVD Crave are aware of the PCM/TrueHD tracks:

It seems Warner plan to make it official. I didn't know the HD-DVD already has TrueHD (like Phantom of the Opera). I'll wait for the USA Disc, it's bound to be cheaper.

Great stuff. It'll be a must buy if it's BD50, encoded with a MPEG4-based codec and uses the same master as remastered US 15th AE (the reddish tinted one, all others are pure shit.). An added bonus if it's region free.

If not? I'll just buy the much cheaper US BD, cuz I have Region A player.

I'd consider the UK Reservoir Dogs, assuming the video is up to scratch. I still think that all the remastered editions have effed-up colours. Also shame about the bad taste novelty packaging. Do grown adults really want BDs to come in a replica petrol can?
