White Heat: 3.5/5

The film seems a bit longer than it actually is at times but Jimmy Cagney is superb in a dark, atmospheric film, sometimes its shocking (especially the scene where Cody loses it in the mess hall) and the score is good as well.
Was Cody Jarret an inspiration for Norman Bates (the way he seems to idolise his mother) - I thought he was a complete bastard TBH.

I gave full marks to JFK last week... but yeah it doesn't happen very often.

So 4/4 means it's not a full mark then? ;).

I don't think Mark did either :D.

The Game: 4.25/5

This was a great film, unnerving and engrossing. I seem to be in a mystery/twisty-turny phase at the moment with films and games. Michael Douglas's performance is excellent as the stupidly rich banker whose life is turned upside down when he recieves an unusual birthday present - an invitation to play "The Game", designed by a company called CRS. He conveys sheer panic and confusion brilliantly.

Anyway...
Near the start I thought it was going to be like Videodrome or Total Recall or something when Nicholas' TV started talking to him.

Then....
I thought the object of "The Game" was to drive Nicholas over the edge, really take over (as it does appear to) and make him kill himself because he was such an asshole TBH, so when Christine says it is literally all a GAME and just made up, that is a twist in itself....
Or is it? Christine identifies the gun Nicholas uses as real, and the guys say Conrad is dead. Was that planned as well? Nicholas jumped off the roof! Is the end scene at his birthday in his head?

Is there a decent BD of this film?

Oh, yeah, the making fun of my ratings 'thing'. Damn, that's tired. Just because I use it doesn't mean anyone else should (and frankly I'm glad it's just me). Grim marks out of 5 so my joke was to change his too low mark for White Heat (a classic) to full marks. If I changed 3.5/5 to **** the joke wouldn't made sense. Sad that I should have to respond on this topic yet again.

Rapt (2009-France-Belgium) **

Intelligent, but achingly slow kidnap drama. Doesn't work as a thriller and possibly isn't mean to.

Might take a chance on a BD of The Game if its £6 or something, problem is with twisty films like this I feel like a memory erase now - maybe if I dont watch for a few years....
Pleased that was my first time seeing it though.

Oddly the HD-DVD and BD are barebones, unlike the SE DVD. I imagine it's a perfectly fine, if unremarkable HD transfer. I would wait get it cheap.

I just don't get this obsession with my ratings system. You guys seem to care more about it's use than I do. I really don't see why it's funny simply because it's different. Not like I'm marking in Klingon or something. :dontknow:

The Game sucks BTW. Dumbest ending of all time.

I've never been keen on The Game either to be honest, pretty weak for a Fincher film.

I wasnt as keen on the ending as it was a bit silly but the film certainly doesnt suck IMO, I thought it was great til then (and even then I did wonder in the ending..)

Found the SE DVD in HMV today for £3 :) Perhaps it was the plot/story of the film that attracted me to it rather than the director TBH.
