The R4 of Kitano's Dolls has been added to the DVDbeaver comparison. It sports an identical native-PAL transfer to the UK Artificial Eye disc and with the addition of Japanese DD5.1, it's the best English-language release globally available.

The R2J is as globally availiable as the R4.

But a lot more expensive and the extras are not English friendly. Yeah I can really see myself getting that R2J now.

But as Bisc said, no ENGLISH subtitled extras.

Artificial Eye need to hurry up and put out Takeshis' (they have the UK rights AFAIK).

The Dolls extras are really rather poor, half of them are spent describing how the look of the film took great precedence over anything else. The art director/costume designer overruled Kitano on so many things. Daft thing to include. You watch this enchanting film and then get told style came first.

Tripe subtitled extras + Affordable price vs. N0 subtitled extras + Insanely high Japanese price tag = no contest.

woah!!!!, cheers HungFist, is there any other thai dvd (be it japanese, thai or hong kong release) you can recommend (i have lone wolf boxset)

Also are the extras subtitled in english? The screenshot above seem to be similar, just a bit lighter, which is great.

Zoo (probably a R2J port)

The transfer is probably identical, the difference in screencaps could be caused by different dvd-players

hey, im thining of picking up "brother" since its in they music zone sale at 2 for £10. but how is this film, kitano is pretty good, and i like the movies i saw of him, but how is this movie?

since its only £5 if its decent i'll pick it up

I don't think you'll be disappointed. It's pretty good. Not up to his Sonatine and Hana-Bi standards, but then, few are.
I'd say it's a little more accessible than those two, but it does retain his terse style.

Yes, the UK DVD of Brother is great. Has a nice 40-ish minute Kitano doco too.

I loved Brother imo.
