They look crappy and its bad for them  something to do with layers of glue and box damage too, pressure etc.. not sure if its all true, but the box damage is definatly true.

Hell and its hard to get a film if its at the bottom :D

I always try to keep tthem all vertical like books, looks better than way. But you have to resort to stacking sometimes I find, but I do hate doing it :D esspecially when they fall over

Fair enough then, I can understand the boxes, but I don't understand why stacking the DVDs horizontally can damage them :? Never heard that before.
I've got a few on my shelf that I've placed vertically using 2 boxsets (Myth LE and Fistful of Dollars Wood Box) as bookends. ;)

I've heard the stacking theory before and I'm not convinced it's much of a risk tbh, certainly I've never had a prob with playback in years of stacking my DVDs. :D

It just looks like shit. Whether it's detrimental to the disc itself is beside the point. It's the worst way to store discs. And as Romero said, it's pretty hard to get a disc out that's near the bottom without the whole stack falling all over you, smothering you, and perhaps crushing you and leaving you there alone...to die.

Think it's cool to stack discs now? :D

You spent all that money on the DVD's, spend some money on some shelves. ;)

I'm actually a pretty big guy, so I just use my arms to stop anything from falling on me when I'm grabbing DVDs at the bottom of the "piles", so nope the stacks stay. :P

There's a very easy method to removing lower DVDs in a big stack: Grab the DVD above the one you want and use that to lift the entire stack up, then take the DVD below it and use your other arm to make sure the stack doesn't move forward as you lower it.

Wow... that sounds much easier than just taking a dvd from a horizontally placed row of DVDs(!) ;)

I was there, the big BNB blackout of november, 2008. We lost many that day...

Hey if any of you wanna buy me a couple of 8ft bookcases I'll gladly store my DVDs properly! :P

I wouldn't trust myself to slap some shelves up because I'm a complete DIY retard and would probablyend up screwing the things on at a 45 degree slant! :D

Just get a couple of 6ft. tall bookcases from Wal-Mart. I'm sure they'd hold everything you've got. Like $30 a pop and easy to put together.

Already have 1 6ft bookcase + 1 4ft bookcase and there's no space for a 3rd bookcase in my room. The best I could do is buy a 2nd 6ft bookcase to replace my 4ft one, but I'd still be stacking. I reckon I have enough discs to fill 2 and a quarter 6ft bookcases.

Then cut down on your DVDs. Those shelves are a disgrace!

I have my collection all neatly alphabetised like a good little boy. :D

Truly. When you start running out of space to store your DVD's, it's time to re-think your buying habits and possibly slow down or sell-off a substantial part of your collection. That's what I did. Had over 1,000 at one point and it just became too much and most of the movies I'd never watch more than once anyway. There's really no reason for someone to own that many movies.

I'm thinking about regrouping my DVDs - put all the Red Dwarf sets together, Simpsons sets etc :)
It's my VHSs I should get rid of (or put somewhere else) - I've decided to cut down on DVDs too.

lol not that I have to justify my own DVD colllection to the likes of you two, but I must have bought around 7 DVDs so far this year. My collection hasn't been growing rapidly for a long time now.

Wow 7 dvds! thats cutting back :)

I too have cut back this year and even started selling my Limited Editions off for crazy cash :D its making space and making my wallet bulge with notes

The thing is when you get anywhere near 1000 dvds its insane as you need soo much room to keep them in any sort of order, thats one reason I am trying to sell lots, I have no room for thousands of dvds, if I did I would keep more.

Shelves are great, but god the sheer weight of loads of dvds and loads of shelves is crazy! I must have at least a tonne of weight in my little room, amazing the floor suports them all.

Of course you do... and less of the cheek. 8)

I severely cut my collection down when I filled up two 6ft bookcases and realised it was a bit sad that I'd been keeping films I'd probably never watch again.

Here's a few pics:

It was my Byeong-Ki's first birthday today, so I bought him...

Image

a cat-shaped tent !

Of course, some people got jealous and tried to spoil his special day...

Image

But, thankfully, most people didn't seem to care...

Image

At the end of the day, it doesn't make much difference.
There will still be 3 cats on my bed...

Image

And I'll have to sleep on the floor.
I used to be "the man who loves the movies you hate".
Now I'm just "that weird french guy with a cat avatar who comes to BnB once a year for no reason and then disappears again".

My basement is still in progress. I still have a few posters and memorabilia to get and organize a few things. Anyway here it is:
