In the myths, Jason and Medea were later overthrown for some horrible act, and Jason was crushed to death when the Argo collapsed on him.grim_tales wrote:Markgway wrote:Ungrateful bastards.grim_tales wrote:No cheering crowds in the city when Jason brings the fleece back?![]()
I just thought we would have seen their reaction or Jason being made king or something.

Puss in Boots (2011-USA) **½
Amusing family fun.
'Puss' is a great character and there're plenty of cute moments to make up for story lulls and lack of LOL gags.
Tabloid (2010-USA) **½
Curious documentary from Errol Morris about a former Wyoming beauty queen who allegedly kidnapped a mormon back in the 70s so he would marry her... Film maintains interest for its 80 mins, but sordid sex and the media story is still pretty thin.

Cars 4.5/5
Watched this last night, and absolutely loved it. The story is pretty small and straightforward: Hotshot racecar is egocentric until he gets stuck in a small town and learns some valuable lifelessons.
Yeah, that sounds pretty lame to me as well, but it's done perfectly here and is entertaining throughout, with lots of humour and interesting characters (brilliantly voiced btw). It all looks fantastic, as you would expect from Pixar.
Not sure how it will hold up on repeat viewings, but I'm sure gonna find out.
Only thing that was a bit annoying was that it had a surround-sound track, and I played the sound through my TV so some off-screen sounds and lines were very difficult to hear. I guess there should be an option hidden somewhere to fix that, but I couldn't really find it.
Also, seeing all those great colourful cars, it really makes you wonder why the hell they haven't been able to produce a proper game for this movie with top-down Micro Machines gameplay.
Anyway, 4.5/5

Amityville 3-D (1983-USA) **
I've seen three Amityville films now - this was the least bad.
Sorority Row (2009-USA) **
More fun than I expected - though the killer's reveal makes bugger all sense.

The story is a ripoff of Doc Hollywood (Michael J Fox). It is one of my son's favourite films - I think the first proper film I showed to him.Yi-Long wrote:Cars 4.5/5

Cars just doesnt really appeal to me that much TBH, it just looks like talking cars and the story doesnt appeal to me as much as the Toy Story films, A Bugs Life etc
I guess I should check it out though

Now that you mention it, yeah, it has a lot in common with Doc Hollywod. I'm sure that movie also isn't the only one of it's kind, where someone gets 'stuck' somewhere and learns valuable life-lessons. Groundhog Day also kinda has thatbrooce-leroy wrote:The story is a ripoff of Doc Hollywood (Michael J Fox). Anyway, I absolutely LOVED it, and like you said, it's kinda weird how many seem to dismiss it as one of Pixar's lesser movies, although it's probably because of the basic premise of 'talking cars' that puts people off.

I'm sure you'll love it, Grim. You're also a sucker for animated movies and this one is great for young and old.grim_tales wrote:

Bit harsh, Pixar have made some brilliant films and animation as a medium shouldnt be dismissed so easily.

They're been pretty much the most consistent studio ever when it comes to releasing quality productions.
And anyone dismissing animation purely for the fact that it's animation, is a complete idiot ofcourse.

So I am an idiot because I can't relate to most of the stuff that they release? I'm not dismissing animation because it's animation, I'm dismissing it because the core material does not interest me. Thus being an idiot, I guess...Yi-Long wrote:And anyone dismissing animation purely for the fact that it's animation, is a complete idiot ofcourse.

Re: What general film/series have you just seen.. marks out
I've only seen the odd Pixar film.
They're not my cup of tea, animation isn't for me except for Japanese stuff and even then I'm not majorly fussed. It's intended for kids, which I cannot relate too. Sure I appreciate adults get something from it too but I'd rather being watching adult films to be honest. Lion King (as in western animation), Toy Story, Toy Story 2, Wall-E are very good but otherwise I can take or it leave it. I've not even seeing bothered Toy Story 3.

I'm not a fan of animation, any animation, Japanese or otherwise, but if something is good, it's good, and I can appreciate the skill that goes into Pixar and similarly animated studio product.

Monty Python & The Holy Grail 3/5 The first 25 minutes is comedy genius, after that the laughs become more fitful though there are still some more moments of inspired lunacy to be had.An exemplary blu-ray transfer from Sony.

Does the BD include the fake "Dentist on the Job" opening credits that were on the DVD?

Shallow Hal (2001-USA-Germany) **½
Mild Farrelly Bros. comedy. More pleasent than I expected.
Cash! (2009-USA) **½
Darkly comic crime thriller with Sean Bean (and Yorkshire accent).
