Boys In Company C 3/5 Solid 70's Vietnam movie has similarities to the later FMJ,not least R.Lee Ermey playing a drill instructor.Early roles for Craig Wasson & Andrew Stevens but the standout is Stan Shaw as Tyrone Washington, the guy should've been a bigger star.An unjustly obscure effort, this is well worth seeing.

there now i think..but here's what he saysMarkgway wrote:Sam, looks like the linked page has been removed.
"I WENT to see The Artist this week and worked out why silent movies were killed off.
Because, back in the 1920s, someone realised that soon super-sized picture-goers would feel obliged to consume vats of nachos, washed down with an ice-rattling gallon of coke, and the noise would cut through the silence like a Texan stampede at an all-you-can-eat steakhouse.
Plus they’re pretty garbage. I can’t believe the hype about this film which is basically Pingu without the laughs.
Or rather I can. It’s an arty homage (pronounced hom-arge) to a dead age of cinema with critics fearing they’ll look shallow if they don’t go along with their peers.
I’ll tell you how bad it is. I went to see The Iron Lady in my home city and enjoyed it more than The Artist. What an astonishing statement that is.
And I’m not talking about watching a film about Thatcher in Liverpool and leaving the cinema with both knee-caps intact."

The Notorious Bettie Page (2005-USA) ***
Enjoyable biopic of the 50s pin-up queen and bondage model is surprisingly charming (given the subject) and benefits massively from a delightful performance from a stunning Gretchen Mol.

Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows Pt 2 2.5/5 ok climax to the long running saga
Death Hunt 3/5 Solid, underrated early 80's Bronson/Marvin actioner. The german blu-ray has a little dnr but is otherwise very good.

Matchstick Men 7.5/10
Genuinely great little film. Seldom talked about Ridley Scott film, with very well crafted story and characters, and a classic Cinematic feel. Great performances from Nick Cage, Sam Rockwell and 'Drag Me To Hell' star Alison Lohman.
Anyone else got love for this?

I found the Amityville remake a bit distasteful - turning a real life murder victim into a J-horror like spook. Mind you, the whole Amityville thing is guility of that, but the original has 70s charm!

Killer Elite (2011-Australia-USA-Jordan) **
Muddled action thriller amazingly based on a true story. It's hard to know whom we're supposed to be rooting for and after a while harder to care. DeNiro is better than he's been in a while though.

Show me one silent movie that is actually silent? This just shows a blatant ignorance for silent movies.
"Plus they’re pretty garbage."
So not only is The Artist garbage, 35 years of film-making (including Nosferati, M and Metropolis) are garbage too. Yep this guy is really qualified to call himself a journalist. He can't even get the basics right.
"critics fearing they’ll look shallow if they don’t go along with their peers."
Millions of people go to see the latest Michael Bay film for the very same reason. Personally I found the story enchanting, silent or otherwise.
Besides the Mail gave it 5 out of 5 and not only that, they clearly loved it

Wonderfully stylish
Still, there’s genuine chemistry between Dujardin and the elegant Bejo.
Yep the Daily Mail definitely hated it. Actually I take it back, they did get it "spot on"

Silent movies are technically silent, and great as they are, they can suffer if accompanied by lousy music.bradavon wrote:Spot on you say? -saltysam wrote:Mirror columnist gets it spot on over the rubbish The Artist

Allegedly, it used to be a convention of arthouse cinemas to show silents SILENT.

Re: What general film/series have you just seen.. marks out
You mean completely without music even? I didnt know that.
I agree the music score can make a difference - some of the music in Metropolis (the BD version) is amazing, then I saw an earlier DVD and the music wasnt as good.
What I've often wondered is - I know silents didnt have speech in - but when actors moved their mouths for a intertitle to come up - I'd wonder what they're ACTUALLY saying (if that makes sense) Or just opening and closing their mouths randomly

Some actors used to say very rude things - cue angry letters from lip readers!

They used to have organists play live music in theatres to accompany the film. The films themselves were totally silent. When they appear on DVD or TV new music has been added.

Some silents were reissued in the 30s with synchronised music and sound effects. Lon Chaney's PHANTOM OF THE OPERA was re-released with new dialogue scenes, but that version is now lost.
