Mentally different colour scheme and contrast look! crikey!

The HKL colors are pretty good but DD's contrast is better in my opinion.

The blu-ray looks better, better colours and all round better but not enough to upgrade. I've always thought HKL did a good job with this one. A respectable picture, great subs and a respectable 5.1 remix (i.e - basically stereo, as all HK 5.1 remixes should be). Good selection of extras too.

From the looks of it, its an easy choice. But should I skip this release just because its 1080i?

a 1080i release is needless in this day and age but at the end of the day if someone showed you 2 blu-rays and said one was 1080i and the other 1080p could you honestly tell the difference?

In addition to the bad HD PAL-conversion, there does look to be edge enhancement - I don't know if that was DD or the master from Atlas or E-M-S.

It otherwise looks fine as an image. However, it's still another add to the versions list, rather than it being the definitive one.

How are the opening credits on the BD? There was some suggestion that DD had made changes. Is it exactly the same version as the HKL?

I have to say that apart from the 1080i aspect the transfer looks very good.

It improves on the HKL which itself was previously the best available version (at least with English subs).

Just a shame they couldn't have found a 1080p 24fps master to work from.

I'll get it when it's cheap enough or perhaps wait for the eventual CineAsia release.

Subtitles aside, what about the IVL Fortune Star? That has Mono (I think) and may look better. I cannot remember. It also has DTS/DD5.1 but I imagine they're pretty bad.

Caps-A-Holic (http://caps-a-holic.com/vergleich.php?vergleichID=44) has a comparison of all other editions.

Fortune Star's master didn't look very good according to a comparison posted a while back.

Thanks Chenlung but the only DVDs I'd consider are the HKL or IVL. No other offer English subs and are anamorphic. Annoyingly I cannot find a comparison of the two. I don't remember it being amazing either but I'd rather see a comparison.

You can see it's different here. HKL vs. New BD:

It maybe a bit of a hard one:

HKL: Re-translated subtitles, extras.
IVL: Mono.

Personally, I'd go for HKL.

Thanks.

I'm not quite sure what DD meant by changes. It seems to look the same as the E-M-S DVD - international print.

Is the "processing needed" goof still present?

32 minutes into the movie (on the R2 e-m-s / Nordic dvd's), there's a missing frame that's replaced with a "processing needed" message that appears for a half a second or so.

About the IVL, I have it and...........don't waste your money. It's terrible. The print is damaged in many places, black levels are non-existent, the colors are faded and the contrasts is extremely high. But the biggest disappointment is the sound. Absolutely horrid 5.1 remixes and a shitty muffled unrestored mono that is barely listenable. This is, IMO, the worse dvd of The Killer to date.

Thanks. It sounds pretty awful. Do you have the HKL to compare? Unless I'm mistaken the only other Anamorphic and English subtitled DVD.

I believe it was the beach shoot-out. I could be wrong. But it's probably been fixed.

My only gripe about the HKL is that it has the least picture of all the anamorphic versions. Other than that it's a pretty kick-ass dvd. Heads and shoulders above the IVL. The subs on the HKL are way better too. The IVL has the old Fox Lorber translation which weren't terrible but could've been better.
