Yeah, I checked again in HMV and they have both the BD and DVD.

I have to say though about the excitement of having a release in their country - it means little if the quality itself is no better.
TouchéBesides pot, kettle, black comes to mind...you have a hissy fit if a trailer on a dvd isn't progressive
If 'SPL' manages to get a translation check (all the titles really, but I'm not holding my breath), it should be the definative Blu-Ray. Whilst the US artwork's better (Cine-Asia's got all that flood light stuff - implying an illegal cage match type movie), I think the best oned come from Hong Kong.
'Fist Of Legend' may come from a master reportedly sourced from Kung Fu HD - it could be the source of all Dimension-acquired films (with the reported dodgy frames and inferior colours compared to Dimension - unless it's remastered again). Although it needs a bit more colour correction (IVL would win in those segments), DD's 'Police Story 3' could actually be the best the film's ever looked (basing the colours on Dimension, but with dramatic improvement in all departments).

Sounds like my chances of getting a review copy of Fist of Legend BD have just shot down to nil then! A damn shame as Cine-Asia were one of the few companies left who were actually good about sending BD review copies out to review sites. I'll try and rent the bugger and report back.

Re: Cine-Asia releasing DD titles in the UK..
Yeah we've asked the PR company who send them out but I've been nagging our editor over the last couple of days and in turn he's recently nagged them again and now I have Kill Zone and Fist of Legend BDs in the post to me as we speak.
OK, so what do people want me to specifically check on Kill Zone? Something about a bad translation, was this only on the Dragon Dynasty DVD release? I own the HK DVD but I might be able to cadge a download of sub scripts taken from the R1 DVD of some subtitle site somewhere to compare.
Fist of Legend DD release has jitter problems, I think I have the disc here somewhere but it is again lost in the great unwatched pile so I haven't actually seen it yet, but if anyone knows offhand at exactly what time the wobble problems occur then I'll be sure to check. I'll be watching both the French and US DVDs over the weekend anyway so may pick up on it myself.

Re: Cine-Asia releasing DD titles in the UK..
DD had corrected the HK subtitle file of 'SPL' for grammar mistakes and overall improved presentation - I was able to embrace the film better. It was certainly passable (just a few bits indicated the lack of a translator). However, comparing subtitle scripts could be a good idea to check for signs of re-translation.
One of my concerns is when the PAL DVDs come out, how film content that's flagged interlaced, will be handled in the conversion (an irreparable mess?).

Hey Shing, if they did fuck up once again in the transfer-area, please come down hard on them in the review. There's no excuse for any new movie to have piss-poor videoquality.
I was there, the big BNB blackout of november, 2008. We lost many that day...

Don't know if they're all interlaced, but their main problem of late is NTSC>PAL transfers.DangerousLeeHandsome wrote:Aren't all Cine-Asia's dvds interlaced anyways?

Re: Cine-Asia releasing DD titles in the UK..
I'm prepared to give them the benefit of the doubt to a certain extent on the actual quality of the transfer (I doubt we'll be seeing a massive upgrade from Standard Def), but if it's cut, not 1080p, and has the wibbly-wobblies then I won't pull my punches.
I'll only be covering the Blu-rays chen so can't comment on the DVDs.

Which isn't surprising considering they're probably using DD masters.chenlung wrote:Don't know if they're all interlaced, but their main problem of late is NTSC>PAL transfers.DangerousLeeHandsome wrote:Aren't all Cine-Asia's dvds interlaced anyways?

Not hard to knock up half decent 1080p transfers for contemporary films is it? Fist of Legend is 16yrs old now and HK Video aside no one has managed to do it right in standard definition yet, let alone HD!DangerousLeeHandsome wrote:Cine-Asia has already released good quality 1080p Blu-rays like Shinjuku Incident and Ip Man so whats the big fuss?

Are you saying the DD is better than the French HK Video? Because I'd say they got it right too.

The Ip Man UK DVD must be decent then if the UK BD is.
