NEW 2001: A Space Odyssey: Poster Edition Blu-ray: AVOID!

I recently received the above blu-ray, it was released 7th of December as part of a new "Scifi Poster Edition" series (same discs, new artwork). I thought I was getting the 2018 Remastered 2 Disc Bluray (which I think is OOP but is included with the 4K BD) but in fact have the 2007 blu-ray.

I first thought "it's just a re-release of the 2011 blu-ray" and I got it wrong, but the slipcase says (no mention of this on the bluray case itself):

"RESTORED & REMIXED 5.1 AND ORIGINAL 1968 THEATRICAL AUDIO FORMATTED FOR 5.1"

The blu-ray only has English DD5.1 and English PCM, which are exactly what my 2007 blu-ray has. The "1968 theatrical 5.1" is nowhere to be found. The Remastered blu-ray from 2018 has two DTS-HD MA tracks. I thought it was odd the Amazon cover art states PCM (but figured it's pre-release cover art).

The blu-ray disc itself is the same blue colour as the Remastered release (it's not the same physical disc as the 2007 release) and cover art for the actual case is also the same cover art as the 2018 Remastered edition.

It's also only 1 disc. The Remastered 2018 release put the extra on a separate DVD-9 to make room for a significantly higher bitrate

Lastly going by this DVD Beaver comparison, the MGM logo is much closer to the Blue here:

Ha ha I know right.

Looks like it's 7 years for me and 6 for Eva.

I moved cities (Bristol, England) and ended up socialising a lot more, which ended up taking up a lot more of my time away from films. I'd also got to the point where I had so many it had got out of hand.

When I moved flats again I downscaled loads and put a big sack of mostly DVDs on the street (maybe a handful of blurays), it included one HD-DVD which I knew one else would be able to play . I made these two guys day with a sack of DVDs and CDs. They're not worth anything and I just wanted rid.

I've still got the same bluray player I think from a decade ago. If it ever broke I'd have to ditch my 20 HD-DVDs.

I've now got a manageable two cabinets worth and whatever I own needs to fit in it. It's still sizeable but not crazy where you have boxes of them.

Because of Covid I've reacquainted myself with the enjoyment of putting a film on. Choosing a film from your own collection and the tactility DVDs, Blurays and Vinyl brings still can't be beaten.

The quality is markedly better than streamed of course too. UHD Netflix is about Bluray quality, but not quite as sharp and it's always only DD5.1 which definitely hampers the enjoyment.

Most people don't care when they're surprised I still buy films.

Although generally I think Netflix is piss poor, much to mainstream. I keep it though because I got it when I was travelling through Latin America last year and am still paying in Argentinian pesos. It's £11.99 for the UHD package in The UK I pay £6.50 . I was paying less than £5 for the HD package.

I also keep it as a favour to my Mum who likes having it. I can speak passable Spanish now, have been having lessons for the past 4-5 years. I'd say Intermediate. My understanding is better than my speaking.

Luckily as I bought 2001 from eBay the seller is obliged to accept returns. So I said it was faulty and am getting a refund.

Turns out whilst the 2018 Remaster must be OOP (only found it at Amazon.com marketplace and EzyDVD.com.au in Australia), I searched all over Europe , HMV have a repackaged version in their "Premium Collection" range.

Same 2 discs but in nicer cover art with a booklet. Only £9.99 too.

Re: 2001 I'm inclined to think the slipcase is a printing error.

The two audio tracks aren't mentioned on the actual case and clearly it's supposed to be the 2007 bluray. I suspect because they're only £9.99 Warner didn't want to include the 2008 release because that's on 2 discs (Disc 1 is just the film / Disc 2 is the extras).

Still in the land of the rising skirt.

I’ve only recently gotten into buying more BDs because I’ve been investing my money in Tokyo trips to see films in 35mm. There’s still loads of 35mm screenings every day in Tokyo, including lots of cool stuff that never came out on home video. And many of the prints are absolutely pristine and make Criterion (e.g. Lone Wolf and Cub) and Arrow BDs (e.g. the Teruo Ishii films) pale in comparison. But those prints surely won’t be around for long anymore so it’s now or never.

But with the state of physical media, I’ve had to get into buying discs too, because those won’t be around for long either, it seems.
Netflix sucks. I usually take one moth every two years, but it’s probably been 3 years since the last time already. Was about to take it for The Irishman, but that popped up in cinema in the neighbouring town, so, no.

I don’t know about the UK, bit Amazon Prime is far more interesting. JP Prime has tons of genre cinema, including Toei and Kadokawa’s own channels. Finnish Prime is surprisingly interesting too, lots of b-films e.g. 80s barbarian flicks and teen sex comedies, also about a 150 Shaw Bros. films though many are English dubs.

Those Japanese 35mm releases look immense. So were the Bruce Lee films in English or Japanese? English seems like an odd choice. Yeah it seems so many Asian discs go out of print quickly. I wanted to try out The Killer Hong Kong blu-ray re-release but seems like it's OOP.

The Irishman is also out on a Criterion. It's alright, overly long though.

Oh really thanks for the info on Amazon Prime. Netflix is so mainstream it's a bore. I wouldn't be buying the UK price £9.99 for HD / £11.99 for UHD.

English. That's how they were originally released in Japan in the 70s. A little odd indeed. The really cool thing is that they have the great Mike Remedios songs that were recorded specifically for them. There are other differences to the audio tracks, too. Way and Game insert Bruce Lee's real battle cries to the tracks, Boss is a composite audio that features some of the Mandarin score, most of the great Peter Thomas score + the Remedios songs... Way actually runs a little longer in the beginning and end to allow the songs to play in full (the so called "Japanese theatrical" audio on the Criterion and Shout BDs is actually a bit of a fake... since they use the standard length version of the film, half of the ending song is cut, and the pre-credits song is placed over the OP credits, losing the original OP credits music in the process).

Not just discs, the whole bloody physical media format may be largely gone soon. I used to think I can miss the current release and buy the next one in 5 years, but there might not be a next one for many of the more marginal titles...

Wow. I hadn't realised the Japanese had all also taken to online content so much. In The UK it seems DVD is pretty dead but blu-ray now has a collector's following. I get the impression as sales are lower many are releasing more elaborate releases in order to charge more, because the numbers aren't there like they used to be.

I didn't realise Amazon has Channels on top of the subscription. Thanks. Netflix doesn't. It's a good idea though.

Bruce Lee was international. I wonder if this is why they were released in English. Still you'd think Japanese if anything.

Just getting UHD copies would be your best bet at this point, especially for films originally on celluloid where they'd actually benefit from 4K.
