Wolf (狼) (Japan, 1982) [DVD] - 2.5/5
"Running is sex!" A wolf guy runs around Tokyo raping women and punching Renji Ishibashi until he finds a wolf girl (the lovely Megumi Saki from Red Violation and Rape Ceremony) to eat bloody steaks and have sex with. A Banmei Takahashi pink film with a strong Sogo Ishii punk vibe, especially in the punk rock score. Original, but ultimately there isn't that much content other than running, raping and disco partying with an animalistic aroma. Originally released in pink triple bill with Saraba aibo and The Harem Valentine Day, the first productions by Director's Company.

There's a bit of confusion about the titles since the "X is Sex" taglines (?) tend to get attached to the the titles. The film title screen simply says "Wolf".

The prints are a bit rough and dark, but quite alright considering the nature of the release. No problems with the audio. New trailers (no originals) for this and other releases are the only extra on the disc (not sure about the packaging since I rented the dvd).

So Long My Partner (さらば相棒) (Japan, 1982) [DVD] - 2/5
"Rock is sex". Part 2 in the Director's Company pink triple bill, about a wanna-be rocker and his two friends. Rock, sex and friendship struggles. Ryo Ishibashi stars, Rikiya Yasuoka is a yakuza, and Yuya Fuckin' Uchida (that's how he's credited) a junkie in a 20 second cameo. Also contains tons of other rockers from ARB, ANARCHY and others, playing roles like Rape Guy A, B, C and D, and Drunker A, B and C. And it was written by Kiyoshi Kurosawa, produced by Banmei Takahashi and directed by actor Ryudo Uzaki. And yet the film is rather dull, executed without the kind of energy that would grab you by the balls. It's watchable with some cultural-historical interest stemming from the cast and crew and the era, but the drama doesn’t work and you won't be left with much... except Yuya Fuckin' Uchida.

Harlem Valentine Day (ハーレムバレンタインデイ) (Japan, 1982) [DVD] - 3.5/5
“Blood is sex”. Death Power director Shigeru Izumiya's cosmic cyber punk pink film set in post Sino-Soviet war future (the film opens with low budget battle footage). A crazed, back-from-the-war soldier wanders in the night searching for his lost girlfriend, who has become a prostitute in some kind of Sogo Ishii / Yoshihiro Nishimura / Shinya Tsukamoto style Blade Runner world. He ends up killing most people he encounters. Like Death Powder, I am not sure if this is a good film, but it is odd, visually stunning and fascinating (especially the soundtrack). Guaranteed to leave even the jaded cult film aficionado wondering "what the hell did I just saw", I can't even imagine how the unsuspecting pink film audiences responded when this opened as the final part of the Director's Company triple bill.

Obviously what they did with poor Circuit of Sorrow is bullshit but I think the Delicate Skillful Fingers BD looks OK and I'm frankly shocked by how much I like their cover for Secret Book: Sleeve and Sleeve.

I think I'd be more satisfied with the Delicate Skillful Fingers art if the original poster and re-issue DVD arts hadn't been so great... I really love them both!



Same with Modern Prostitution... the art is alright, but why not stick more closely to the poster art which is magnificent?

Hello everyone, i have recently developed a crush on Hitomi Kozue and i'm trying to collect as many of her movies as possible. I have all the common ones that you can find online (e.g. Naked Rashomon, woman in hell series etc.) but the more obscure ones i can't find. Can you point out to the best place to purchase dvds or vcds of these rare pinku movies and shipping international? For example i am aware that dmm has many pinku films and many of the ones i'm intereted in, but from what i know there is no way to order from there if you are not in Japan.
So does anyone know of a site/shop where you can order internationally?

I haven't bought anything from the August batch yet and to be honest I don't think I will upgrade Delicate Skillful Fingers. I liked the film OK but I must say I'm fine with sticking with the DVD.

Girl and the Wooden Horse Torture (Japan, 1982) [VoD] - 3.5/5
Between 1974 and 1988 Nikkatsu produced nearly 40 adaptations from SM author Oniroku Dan's novels. Most of them were intellectually underwhelming, morally questionable, and tiresome at best. But what would happen if one of the best Japanese screenwriters of the 1980s, Takashi Ishii, adapted a Dan novel and handed it to first time director Fumihiko Kato, who later became known for his atypical Dan films?

Despite the misleading title, this movie bears all the trademarks of Ishii's psychological erotic thrillers and could be an SM-oriented entry in the Angel Guts series. The protagonists are Nami and Muraki: a bullied high school girl and her terminally ill teacher. The opening scene sees Nami saved from violent delinquents by her teacher, who however then collapses in front of her. She leaves him there. The experience haunts her in her dreams, which begin to merge with reality. Years later they meet again after Muraki has been fired and has hit the rock bottom. The film never loses its psychological tension, even though the prolonged SM finale - and a few other bits - may be a bit much for the casual viewers. The overly simplistic Oniroku Dan conventions are nowhere to be found. The film also looks pretty good with the usual urban and occasionally surreal Ishii imagery.

Sex-Crime Coast: School of Piranha (肉体犯罪海岸 ピラニヤの群れ) (Japan, 1973) [VoD] – 1.5/5
Male and female delinquents dubbed as “Piranhas” (no, not the Toei guys) have sex on beach, take captives in a house, then have sex the house. Hitomi Kozue is the main bad girl getting jealous when shag partner Ryuji Nakamura gets intimate with rich girl Masumi Jun. Dull home invasion Roman Porno with a Sun Tribe flavor and a bit of gang content. Director Shogoro Nishimura merely slaps the genre premises together and proceeds to do nothing with them. Last reel action aside, it's embarrassingly unambitious for an early Roman Porno.

I watched this as well by way of the recently released Happinet DVD and liked it marginally better:

Sex-Crime Coast-Piranha School (肉体犯罪海岸　ピラニヤの群れ) (Japan, 1973) [DVD] - 2/5
A gang of no-good youths calling themselves "Piranha" terrorize a seaside community by breaking into rich folks' mansions, stealing and raping everything in sight. Even at a mere 67 minutes this film by Shogoro Nishimura overstayed its welcome. The influence by the likes of Straw Dogs (1971), Clockwork Orange (1971) and Last House on the Left (1972) is obvious but what's on display here doesn't even touch the better rip-offs of those films. There is an attempt to show that the rich folks are no better than the youths by portraying them as a bunch of backstabbing, cheating cretins. Masumi Jun, as the rich patriarch's rebellious daughter, has the sole good line of the film, when she tells her dad that "fathers are also like piranha, they relentlessly devour those around them". If only the rest of the film had been that interesting. Instead we get a climactic rape scene inside the mansion, with all the youths sporting mime make-up and incredibly incongrous oriental snake charmer music blasting away on the soundtrack.

This is the recently added DMM HD stream. As you can see, the colors are all fucked up. Most of their recent Roman Porno HD upgrades and new additions have this same shit look based on the trailers. I always wondered if it was just the previews, but Sex-Crime Coast proves it's the entire film!

The DVD has much more natural colors, so this must be a DMM/FANZA thing.

Cinderella Ecstasy (シンデレラエクスタシー 黒い瞳の誘惑) (Japan, 1988) [DVD] - 4/5
Yoshihiro Kawasaki (Hell in Bottles, Madame de Sade) here gives the classic fairy tale a late 80ies Nikkatsu sex flick update. A woman named Reiko stumbles into a shoe store and is given a pair of red shoes that the owner tells her bring good luck. Just before, he refused to sell those same shoes to another woman named Sheila, who is a "Rock Queen" and hangs out with her buddies Kiss and Bowie in their rock den when she's not fronting her band. The shoes soon work their magic as Reiko meets and falls for a motorcycle racer but Sheila is still after the shoes herself and eventually kidnaps Reiko's man. Overlong sex scenes are the only thing I can hold against this otherwise very entertaining film. Kawasaki directs with a lot of style and the characters are all interesting in their own ways. The ending, which sees Sheila asking the rolling ocean waves who is the prettiest woman in the whole world before exploding in a geyser of blood is also quite amazing.

Secret Book: Sleeve and Sleeve (秘本 袖と袖) (Japan, 1974) [DVD] - 2.5/5
Passable erotic period melodrama (set in Meiji 27/1894) from director Akira Kato and based on the novel by Fuyo Oguri. Morio Kazama stars as writer and ladies-man Yonosuke, who gives inept English lessons (using Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet) and, one rainy night, is ushered into a lonely woman's house. Her husband is at the front in the war with Russia and, as our hero will soon discover, she's wearing a chastitity belt... But don't expect the ribald, comedic tone found in some of Nikkatsu's other erotic period pieces. This is, for the most part, a rather serious melodrama, just with a bunch of sex. The acting is fine and Kato directs the film as competently as expected but ultimately there isn't anything particularly memorable about it.

Lusty Discipline in Uniform (セーラー服色情飼育) (Japan, 1982) [VoD] – 3/5
Middle aged, well dressed professor has a crush on a cute high school girl, starts harassing her with obscene phone calls. And he's the film's hero! At first a positively ridiculous piece of Japanese pop culture - surely no other country could produce films like this - but it's only so far till you start feeling bad for the victim, and become disgusted by the filthy bastard of a protagonist. But then, what do you expect from a film written by Gaira Komizu! He wins you over again by the end. Kazumi Kawai, an insanely pretty young actress in her film debut role, plays the stalking interest. This was her first and only foray into Roman Porno, which has further elevated the film's status. She went on to act on TV and films, including Chusei Sone's Blow the Night (1983), before taking her own life by jumping off a building in 1997 at the age of 32. Title is a bit of a misnomer btw, there's little lust under this girl's uniform, and Kawai does little more than topless nudity as contractually stated. The film remains one of Nikkatsu’s most popular titles, having been released theatrically multiple times, as well as on VHS, DVD (4 times!) and BD!

There was a very good comment from Goro Taku in the other thread, let me copy-paste it here as well.

It's been a while since I watched this but what I found most disturbing about it was that I felt that the script was written with a girl much younger than the lead actress in mind. The way she talked and her overall naiveté didn't seem to make sense for someone the lead actress' age. Maybe that was just me but considering some of the other stuff that Nikkatsu was putting out in the early 80ies, I wouldn't be that surprised.

I didn't think about that before, but now that you mention it, yeah, maybe. The scenes between her and her mother are certainly in favor of your argument.

I wrote a few posts regarding Nikkatsu censorship in a Facebook group, let me copy-paste them here as well. Most of the content has been discussed here before over the years but maybe this post serves as a quick summary.

Nikkatsu Censorship: Part 1

Some of you may be aware of the censorship case regarding actress Machiko Otani (大谷麻知子). Several years ago Nikkatsu pulled all her movies from distribution and ceased sales. Amazon JP listings of old VHS cassettes featuring her have been removed. Several Japanese movie databases (Allcinema, Movie Walker) have removed her name from movie credit lists. All movie director retrospectives held in Tokyo in the last 7 years or so (Noboru Tanaka, Chusei Sone x 2, Kichitaro Negishi) have omitted films Otani is in. Synapse said they tried licensing the Angel Guts series but Nikkatsu wouldn’t sell the 1stfilm because of an actress who appears in it.

The reasons behind this case are not clear to me. If anyone knows, please clue me in. The only piece of info I can find is this Japanese language message board post from 2013, where someone claims he/she saw a message from Otani's family member "about 7 years ago" saying "Otani died deeply regretting her film career".

If that is correct, it would appear her family has requested Nikkatsu to pull her films from distribution. However, I cannot find any confirmation for the claims above, nor for her death.

She had a very short career lasting only about 6 months, during which she appeared in films by several notable directors, e.g. Angel Guts: High School Co-ed (Sone, 1978), Pink Salon: Five Lewd Women (Tanaka, 1978) and High School Girl (Negishi, 1979).




Nikkatsu Censorship: Part 2

Sometime in the 80s the pink film industry agreed to stop exploiting high school girls in pink film advertising. This resulted in many old films being re-titled. Sometimes the results were… ironic. In many titles ”high school girls” (女子高生 or 女高生) became “school girls” (女子校生 or 女校生). Is that any better? The funniest part is that "high school girl” (joshikôsei / jokôsei) and “school girl” (joshikôsei / jokôsei) have the exact same pronunciation. They just replaced the “high” (kô) kanji with the school (kô) kanji. You can see this for example with Angel Guts: High School Co-ed (1978) where the poster spells “High School Girl” (女高生 天使のはらわた) but for the VHS cover it was changed to “School Girl” (女校生 天使のはらわた.



There were other name changes as well. For example “Sailor suits” (セーラー服 / Sêrâ-fuku) became “uniforms” (制服 / seifuku). e.g. Young Girls' Holding Cell (セーラー服鑑別所 or 制服鑑別所) (1982).



It seems the censorship has since loosened since many of Nikkatsu’s Japanese DVD and BD releases have reverted back to the original titles e.g. Lusty Discipline in Uniform (1982) which went from the original theatrical “Sailor Suit” (Sêrâ-fuku shikijô shiiku / セーラー服 色情飼育) to the theatrical re-release “Uniform” (Seifuku shikijô shiiku / 制服色情飼育) and finally back to “Sailor Suit” (Sêrâ-fuku shikijô shiiku / (セーラー服 色情飼育) for its DVD and BD releases.
