This is odd... Did Japan ban to the word "turkish bath" as well now? I ask because the poster for the film above clearly has トルコ行進曲　夢の城 as its title but the forthcoming Happinet DVD retitled it to ソープ行進曲 夢の城. What gives?

They did, in fact. I think that was in the late 80s. I guess the Turks weren't too happy about Japan using their country's name as a synonym for brothels (especially when it was just "Toruko / Turkey" in common speech with the "furo / bath" commonly omitted).

Anyway, the Turkish Baths were all renamed into Soap Lands back in the 80s. Young adults in Japan don't even know the word Turkish Bath anymore. I've had to tell them that it means Soap Land.

Quite understandable, yes. There is actually a precedent for Happinet renaming a トルコ film that escaped me during the original announcement and release:



What's interesting, though, is that this seems to apply to physical BD/DVD releases only! There's quite a few films with トルコ still in the title on amazon prime video, for example, including Toei's Haunted Turkish Bathhouse (怪猫トルコ風呂) and indeed even トルコ１１０番　悶絶くらげ, which had its title changed for the BD! A weird double standard, isn't it? Maybe they think Turkish people have no internet?

There's been some strange inconsistency before, too, e.g. Lusty Discipline in Uniform (1982):

It seems like they decided sailor suits were fair game after all when the film came out on VHS. Yet some other films, like Young Girls' Holding Cell (セーラー服鑑別所) lost their sailor suit on VHS (制服鑑別所).

Killing Angel Muhan is a solid and nicely violent V-cinema action flick. I'm not happy that Happinet is now including 90ies flicks in their lineups since they're eating into the amount of actual roman porno that can be released, but this is a nice addition and I will gladly upgrade from my non-anamorphic DVD from 2002.

Happinet spectacularily dropped the ball on their so-called "remastered" release of Killing Angel Muhan! It is, in fact, the exact same non-anamorphic transfer that was previously on the Pioneer DVD from 18 years ago. I think the old Pioneer DVD actually has the better encode of this ancient transfer. And I don't care if everyone at Happinet had Corona, there's no excuse for releasing this and calling it a remaster.

Crazed Fruit BD (part 1/2)

I recently got the Happinett Crazed Fruit (狂った果実) (1981) BD. I haven’t sat through the whole disc yet, but the picture quality looks alright. 1080i. Quite a bit of black crush, but I'm not too bothered by that. Not perfect by any means, but not the kind of disco pop colour contrast remix abomination like some of the other BDs. I think this looks about the same as the Rolling on the Road BD. And the old DVD was a VHS master anyway, so no point holding on to that one. A couple of quick caps below:

DIGS/Dimention have announced that they will release Koji Wakamatsu's 1974 film WET DICE (濡れた賽ノ目) on DVD on April 2nd. This film has been previously unavailable and for the longest time the camera negative was considered lost. To this date it isn't even listed in most filmographies of actor Jinpachi Nezu. The release is to coincide with Wakamnatsu's 85th birthday the day before.

Some thoughts:

- Apparently, they are now issuing films on DVD that were previously BD exclusives on a 1 per month rate (Madam Scandal, Scent of a Spell, Rouge, Female Teacher in Rope Hell)
- Some films that are reissues of previous Geneon DVDs are prized at 3000 yen instead of the usual 2000 yen. White Rose Campus for example. Not sure if that listing is a mistake or if it would indicate a remaster.
- Are they phasing out BD releases completely? The fact that March 2022 is a DVD only batch might indicate as much.
- Releases I'm excited about? Uh, Red Rope: Until We Expire finally getting a DVD release is good news for Takashi Ishii completists, since he wrote the script. As a fan of Keiko Asano's breasts, I also won't mind upgrading Rusted Body from my 20 year old Dutch PAL DVD. I just hope they don't pull a Killing Angel Muhan and use the exact same master again anyway. Maybe Koichiro Uno's Girl Dormitory since the previous Koichiro Uno flick I watched was kind of amusing.

Waiting Wet Woman is rather good. It's got a Haruhiko Arai scrip, Ako is in a small supporting role, and Yasuaki Uegaki does better job helming it than he usually does (he's overrated IMO). It's one of those films that could just as well have been an ATG release, like some of Kichitaro Negishi's films.

Thanks for the tip! I'll probably pick this up as well, then, since it's a BD and comes with Japanese subtitles. Have you seen Tanaka's Female Teacher (1977) film? I know he directed two Female Teacher films in 1973 but I don't think I'm familiar with this one from '77.

I have seen it, and forgotten all about it. All I recall is it being rather boring.

I must have written something about it, though. Let's see... yep, here:

Female Teacher (Japan, 1977) [DVD] - 2/5
A commercially successful, but underwhelming re-start of the Female Teacher series. A music teacher is raped by her students, which kicks off a series of events that lead to murders and kidnapping. This is one of the few Roman Porno films that actually deal with the psychological and social consequences of rape in other that purely exploitative way. Unfortunately, it still doesn't hold up as a drama, and at 100 minutes it runs way too long. The first and final third work, but the middle part drags quite a bit.

Certainly one of Tanaka's weakest films IMO. As for the Female Teacher series, I'm no fan. The only one I thought was a bit better than the rest was Female Teacher Hunting. The rest are 1.5 or 2 star films in my books.

One of my all time favourite Roman Porno films, Kichitaro Negishi and Haruhiko Arai’s Rape Ceremony (暴行儀式) (1980) has finally been remastered! This was on TV on Wowow Cinema a few days ago. A good friend of mine helped me out since I didn’t have access to that channel!

Unfortunately this is the R15-version prepared for TV. Most Japanese TV channels have an R-15 policy, so they won’t show any R18 content on TV. Nikkatsu is hence preparing censored R15 versions of their Roman Porno films for TV (though I have some doubts about the consistency since I've never been able to spot any censorship in the R15 Version of Circuit of Sadness).

Just by quick look, this scene seems to be the only one that’s been censored for the R15 version. There are TWO other scenes with similar censorship, but that was already in the R18-version and almost certainly in the theatrical prints (I’ve seen one, but can’t remember such detail) and original negative.

Finally some good news! Happinet's release of Kazuo 'Gaira' Komizu's Rusted Body: Guts of a Virgin III (拷問貴婦人) (1987) is actually a proper remaster and blows the old Dutch DVD out of the water.

PS: Does anyone know if the idiotic English title and series association once again originates from Weisser? The film is totally unrelated to either Entrails/Guts of a Virgin or Entrails/Guts of a Beautiful Woman and the Japanese title translates to something like Torture Madam.

Finally got to see this one:

Rape Frenzy: Five Minutes before Graduation (卒業五分前　群姦) (Japan, 1977) [TV] – 3.5/5

With a title like this, you think you know what you’re in for. Well, what do you know? This is one of action director gone rogue pink helmer Yukihiro Sawada’s best pictures, a youth drama following stressed-out, confused male and female students on their last day before high school graduation, facing an uncertain and bleak future.

This film is far more reminiscent of Nikkatsu’s early 70s youth pictures and the following year’s Panic in High School (1978) than anything the title (which may or may not have been a commercial after-thought) would have you expect. There are several good scenes with the alienated protagonist finding himself detached from the people around him, his friend trying to escape the patronising society with a girlfriend and a shotgun, and live rock music performed in party scenes. And then some sexual assaults (half of them performed by girls or women against boys) springing from societal frustration and personal insecurity. The cinematography is excellent, with loads of those lovely ‘lonely people walking the city streets in solitude’ shots. The ending is a little underwhelming but perhaps fittingly low-key, and does not, by the way, deliver any kind of rape frenzy five minutes before the graduation.

This film has been unavailable for viewing for decades besides 35mm prints (which I’ve never seen screened either) as far as I know, but has finally been scanned by Nikkatsu. The film had its TV premiere last week. Here’s hoping for a physical media release. Meanwhile, for other fine Sawada Roman Porno films see his beast cop thriller Retreat through the Wet Wasteland (1973) and the Peckinpah influenced Assault! (1976).

















Reviewed: The "R15 Version" aired on TV on Eigeki. There are actually two version of that channel, one showing R15-versions and the other showing R18-versions. The latter requires paying premium prices or switching service provider. The 18-version of this film was on the other channel. The good news is that I could only spot censorship in two occasions in the R15 version, and both looked like they could be theatrical censorship to me! The usual ugly mosaic balls that appear in many R15-versions are nowhere to be found here. So I'm not really sure how this differs from the R18 version, or if it really even differs from it.
