A Serbian Film

You don't ever want to see - A Serbian Film then :o

Still I guess rape in films does one thing, gets you behind anyone who was raped - when they dish out justice on the scumbags you know it is 100% justified. As we know most rapists get away with it, so it is good in films to see the women dish out some painful justice in these types of revenge films. Still rape is a fine line of how much to show, and how much you want to disturb the viewer.

The UK version has just been passed cut by the BBFC.

A whopping 3:48 secs removed for public consumption.

Frightfest have accordingly cancelled their screening.

A Serbian Film must be really tough if that much was cut.

You have no idea  even talking about what is done in the film, well its easily one of the sickest films I have heard about in my life, and I have read/seen some evil shot.

Imagine rape of everyone (no matter what age, or sex), killing, torture and worse!!! on a scale so vile you puke after seeing it. Many seen to say after seeing it, they just feel disturbed. I am surprised the film has even been released in any form in the UK.

The feedback I've seen has been extremely positive, though. Was given a 5 star review by Finland's (world's?) best (internet) movie magazine, with an average rating of 4.38/5 from the other critics (only 4 people, based on the HÕFF screening).

Obviously not a film many people here should try watching, though.

I think I might check out A Serbian Film to see what the fuss is about, not that I think it's going to be anywhere near as bad as it sounds (no film ever is when the nastiness is placed in context), if only because I'm one of the few people I trust to not have a hysterical reaction to controversial material nor be one of these people (and there are far too many of these types out there) who desperately cling to any artistic message in exploitation films, when most exploitation films like most horror films are meant mostly as entertainment for people with a specific aptitude for the content provided.

Just look at the reaction people have been having to the likes of Antichrist and Martyrs, with a heavy split between condemnation and lofty praise for the artistry of the filmmakers when in reality the films are merely button-pushing without having anything particularly new or intellectual or even worthwhile to say. Apparently A Serbian Film is allegorical... yeah we'll see.

Suggestions that it now may go straight to DVD as cinemas aren't keen on touching it.

Hype or not it proves you can film the sickest most degrading shit of all time and SOMEONE will pay to see it.

That's human nature.

Interesting trivia: IMDb search engine does not find this film. Or its director. You have to google it.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1273235/

I should get to see the film uncut in cinema next month. Let's see how it is...

I had a chance to see Life and Death of a Porno Gang last week but I skipped it
(this sentence grammatically tits up or what? I seem to be saying I went to see it...)

Not that I know anything about Serbian movies, but I read somewhere (aka, don't know shit for real, somebody please confirm) that some of the cast members are very famous actors in Serbia, and that they only accepted the roles for political reason.

copy-paste from the other thread

A Serbian Film (Serbia, 2010) – 3.5/5
The most talked about, controversial, and disturbing movie of the year is also the first fully independently produced film in Serbia in three decades. And it stars two of the country’s biggest movie stars! “I grew up witnessing war atrocities in the everyday news. 10 years later NATO bombed my home city. Sorry I can’t make happy go lucky movies”, director Srdjan Spasojevic apologized. The film follows a retired porn star who is lured back into movie business by a megalomaniac art film producer shooting a film that would satisfy today’s Serbian film audiences – the ones who can’t experience the brutal reality of life on the streets anymore. Living up to its reputation, A Serbian Film is one of the most disturbing movies ever made, and not because of the ultra-controversial graphic footage, but because it’s a well acted, well written and captivating piece of reality. The nightmare trip it does admittedly go a bit too intentionally rough on a couple of occasions despite the director’s claims of not intentionally trying to make it quite as hard as it came out to be. Viewers beware: emotional vacation is needed after viewing this film.

I hear the director is still planning UK distribution. Silly Serbians. You can’t show this kind of movie in the UK.

with 4 minutes of cuts

Previously they only demanded 49 cuts, but that was only 3 min 48 sec.

I bet you could even show a live execution over there if you cut out the execution part... :icon_suspect:

So much has happened...

The Americans will give it a theatrical run, with NC-17 rating and 5 minutes of cuts. Later there will be a cut-to-shreds DVD (the NC-17 version) a "minimally" (less than one minute) cut VoD, and uncut BD. Probably.

Major Nordic web store Discshop pulled the film from their selection. Official Swedish language rant below:

Several other Swedish stores have been reported doing the same.
