The cost of alochol could double
The Govt. brought in 24 hour drinking and then wonder why there are problems? All this pricing plan will do IMO is piss off responsible people (ie most of us) who don't behave like chavs and just like a drink sometimes. Chavs will always get drunk no matter what the price of alcohol.

This will just penalise the majority IMO - tits

Could potentially make more people turn to illegal substances since pills generally cost a couple of quid each.

Exit alcohol, enter glue-sniffing!
Anyway, I'm never in favour of these kinda price-hikes, supposedly to combat alcohol-abuse.
I rather see them double (or triple) the fines and punishments for those who misbehave while drunk.
Now you are raising the prices for everyone, including all those who drink responsibly, while it's only a small percentage of the drinkers who are out of control...
Not really fair, is it?
The goverment SHOULD take their responsibility, NOT in this way, but by going after those who misbehave.... and going after them HARD.

Naturally, since it's paid for by benefits.grim_tales wrote:Chavs will always get drunk no matter what the price of alcohol.

It isn't intelligent what I wrote. It's just common sense. The problem nowadays is that too many people, especially politicians it seems, are so stupid that common sense is now considered intelligence(!)

Re: The cost of alochol could double
This was one of the better things the government did. Very few pubs/bars open 24 hours, that's simple the media picked up on, when the reality is, it didn't happen. It used to piss me off royally I had to leave the pub at 11.grim_tales wrote:The Govt. brought in 24 hour drinking and then wonder why there are problems?
I'm undecided this price fixing idea is a bad one. Booze can be bought for such insanely cheap prices. It's often cheaper than water. I tend to stick to decent bars, which never go in for such low prices, so it won't affect me much.

One positive thing to come from this is the fact it could well price Absinthe out of Bradavon's reach.

The problem with common sense is that it isn't common.

So you're buying shit you can't afford? If I don't have it I don't spend it. Credit is for fools and the reckless (as the recession has emphasised). Although I suspect you probably have more money that you make out. With your middle-class background you've probably never even met a "skint" person.bradavon wrote:That's why I'm skint . Re: The cost of alochol could double
The thread title is wrong anyway, the government isn't doubling the cost of alcohol at all, but merely applying a "minimum price" to cheap booze. They say it's to curb binge drinking, but really the biggest demographic who binge drink on a 24-pack of carling are teenagers and borderline alcoholics - both of whom will happily binge drink at the higher prices like they did 10yrs ago before the cheapo supermarket booze boom really took off. The irony is that this will just push people back into pubs and clubs, where weekend binge drinking and alcohol-induced violence is most rampant. Well done government!
Oh and about the 24hr licensing laws, how many of us can list many pubs/clubs whose opening times were heavily altered by its introduction? It seems to me that the vast, vast majority of pubs close an hour or two later now and nightclubs still open until 3-4am like before the laws.
