Download You Tube videos
Paste the URL into either site and click Submit, then download the video:
1. http://vixy.net/
Video:
Codec: DivX (AVI), QuickTime (MOV), MP4 or 3GP
Resolution: 320x240
FPS: 30
Audio
Codec: MP3 or AAC
Bitrate: 64Kbps
2. http://www.bleb.org/services/vidconvert/
Video:
Codec: DivX (AVI)
Resolution: 244x144
FPS: 12
Audio
Codec: MP3
Bitrate: 32Kbps
As you can see one is more suited to Ipods, PSPs and Computers, and the other Mobile Phones.
Both work a treat BUT will probably need refreshing/reloading 2-4 times before they start downloading. The servers look to be busy and will probably time out the first time. It does work though and very well indeed.
Personally I'm no fan of MP4 or 3GP, QT MOV is good but I like DivX or Xvid best. I'm downloading in DivX AVI format. The file sizes are smaller in MP4 or 3GP than DivX though.

Bad idea IMO.
You're losing quality with the compression to AVI.
Best choice (in my view):
-Paste the URL in there:
http://javimoya.com/blog/youtube_en.php
-Hit download.
-Download link.
You'll download the video in its original flash format (*.flv).
Play it with Media Player Classic and a recent version of FFDShow .

Well obviously if I knew about that site I'd have posted it instead
.
Personally I'll still be using Vixy though. I can't be faffed getting a codec to play it in MPC. AVI is more universal (RAR? Pah, stick to ZIP). I can play it in WMP and crucially it will work in Windows Media Center which I'll be using soon. I can also play DivX/Xvid in my DVD Recorder too, not that I'd play these as they'd look awful.
Thanks though that definitely is still useful. Although that does win top marks for keeping it in the native format and thus being able to download it immediately. I'll still be using AVI though
.
Lets face it You Tube videos are very low quality to start with.
p.s - That said the second one does have worth as it's designed to be played back on your mobile so isn't a direct comparison. In fact the first is also for Ipods, PSPS and the like so useful too.

Which is precisely why you wouldn't want to make them look even worse by converting them to DivX.Lets face it You Tube videos are very low quality to start with.

Amen, this is the most easiest option, also FLV are playable in VLC, both programs are best suited. Also if you want to convert this files, I would recommend Super. Not only will it convert to avi, there are a bunch of other files it can convert to, including PSP format, and it is free. Highly recommendedEvaUnit02 wrote:...Or just use the Firefox extension Videodownloader. The native Flash video format FLV is playable in MPC.

I just checked and you do need Ffdshow for certain.
Why in god's name would you want to stream low-res 320*240 videos ripped off of Youtube to your TV in the first place?bradavon wrote: and crucially it will work in Windows Media Center which I'll be using soon. Did you read my whole sentence?
It could be fun at a party though, still VCD is 320x240 (or there abouts) remember and that display ok on a TV. Some of those are awful quality.
Super and that FF add-on are overkill for me. I only need it occasionally. I don't use You Tube that often, there is way to much video on there for me. Overkill heaven.
VLC is great for video which is only partially downloaded but the interface seriously sucks. MPC has too many options IMO, the vast majority you never need for just playing videos. Give me good old WMP64, everything I'll ever need to play videos and no more. I use MPC for RealPlayer (when I have to) and DVD (when I capture) but no other time.
If I can't get WMP64 working on Vista I'll switch to MPC though.

No, not that I know of if you want playback of the likes XviD, MKV, OGM, OGG, etc.bradavon wrote:Really? There's no other mass codec supporting media player. Surely Apple have something, no?
There's also no Real Alternative either, so you have to run the ACTUAL Real(Crappy)Player. But it's okay I guess, cuz Mac programs don't leave junk on your machine like registry entries, DLLs in system32, log files, etc (unless you're installing OS critical stuff, like updates or drivers). Just extract them from the DMG archive and run the program.

So MAC software is always in one folder? Oh man that brings back the days of DOS when it was always in one folder, how it should be.
As for RealPlayer I'd not bother period then, the number of sites which don't also offer another method is so low. RealPlayer is evil.
p.s - Can't you install Xvid codecs on a MAC so they work in the MAC software? I presume ITunes. If not this seriously puts a blow into Apple's claim the MAC is the best for media.

Oooh, there's also an OSX port of the popular Lunix media player MPlayer.
VLC keeps crashes occasionally on OSX with XVIDs and MKVs, I'll try all of the above. I like watching my fansubbed anime on the Mac cuz of the widescreen CinemaDisplay. It's too hard to read the burnt-in subs (fansubs are burnt-in cuz fansubbers like to go overboard with effects, fonts, colours, etc at times. Eg Karaoke translations of opening/ending theme songs. I'll post examples for you.) from a distance when viewing on the TV in the lounge (streamed to my Xbox over the network). The resolution on fansubs is relatively low (around 704*396 usually for 16:9 OAR stuff, which most anime is these days.) for net distribution so you need economic filesizes. The Xbox is also too slow for (MKV) h./x.264 playback.

A list of codecs etc - components, as they call them - from one of Apple's QuickTime pages. There's probably more, but I've only found the need to install the first two into Quicktime. There's also Flip4Mac, which plays WMV format stuff in QT.
VLC handles most of what I need; the codecs are useful for when I'm running Front Row (which uses QuickTime) with the remote, and want to watch AVIs and the like.
Also, is it me, or does VLC not allow you to 'rewind' video files on Windows with the keyboard? Cos it does on MacOS, and it just seems a little strange. There're lot of little things like this; VLC seems to be better featured on MacOS (ignoring incredulous stuff like MS Office being better on Apple machines. Seriously.)
As for crashes, I've found that VLC is pretty stable; I've had one or two dodgy AVIs where it's crashed, but it's a fairly low percentage. I've not tried any Matroska's though, it must be said; I only have the Ranma 1/2 series and films in MKV and I've honestly not tried them.
As for the whole Flash video thing, I use this to do the job. Pretty self-explanatory

Thanks. I notice that there's no QT codec for Matroska, lame.Kurgan wrote:A list of codecs etc - components, as they call them - from one of Apple's QuickTime pages.
Wouldn't know, I've only ever used VLC for Mac (no need to use it on PC).Also, is it me, or does VLC not allow you to 'rewind' video files on Windows with the keyboard?

VLC is excellent for playing videos that have only partly downloaded (it's even better than MPC), it sucks otherwise. I wouldn't know about rewinding with the keyboard, the mouse in this instance is much quicker.
If VLC is better on the Mac so what like I said it sucks. By the way Mac fanboys talk you'd think "every" software ever made is better on the MAC. Right, okay.

According to Wikipedia MS Office launched first on the MAC though which made me chuckle
. I could well believe it considering how old the MAC is.

I have to ask, why? The MAC version is always 12 months late for starters. I fail to see how MS Office 2004 is better than MS Office 2007ignoring incredulous stuff like MS Office being better on Apple machines. Seriously.

What's your problem? I never said I was a Mac fanboy and I never will be. IMO Macs are PCs with down syndrome. Mac fanboys are hipster tossers, non-starving artists (they'd have to have plenty of money to afford the fucking things afterall) and Digg-visiting morons.bradavon wrote: By the way Mac fanboys talk you'd think "every" software ever made is better on the MAC. Mac peripheral are pants too. The Mighty Mouse is the shittiest mouse that I've ever used. The CinemaDisplays are great quality screens, but they're way overpriced and you can get larger sized equal quality Dell and Samsung ones with far more functionality (like VGA input which is still better than DVI-D for a number of tasks) for significantly less.
MS Office 2004 doesn't support the Office 2007 formats at all, so it is instant fail. MacOS won't get support of the new Office 2007 formats until Office 2008 is released later in the year.I have to ask, why? The MAC version is always 12 months late for starters. I fail to see how MS Office 2004 is better than MS Office 2007
Also Tiger is only available in 32-bit and thus is automatic fail. x64 pwns all.

Tiger is 64-bit. And doesn't have issues with backwards compatibility for software - I run Duke Nukem 3D and QuakeIIIArena from time to time
Not that being 64-bit or 32-bit means bollocks all to anyone who just wants to use a computer to type a letter.

ZOMFG, you can play games from 1996 and 1999, I'm so envious!!!!11!!!!1 What else, Id Software technology based games and Blizzard games... OHNOES DOOM 3 and Worlds of Warcrap run on Mac, PC better look out!
OSX fails as a games platform. You'd be fucked if Mac didn't run on x86 architecture these days. Parallel Desktops and VMWare Fusion are pwn.

Why do you always go on the offensive? I wasn't even talking to you, jeez.EvaUnit02 wrote:What's your problem? I never said I was a Mac fanboy and I never will be.
Not that I think Kurgan is an Apple Fanboy, it's just odd how "everything" is apparently better on the MAC, and in fanboy's eyes everything is shit on a PC.
It makes me chuckle when you read "The MAC can run Windows, try running MAC software on Windows". Why would I ever want to? Unlike the MAC Windows has no need to run other OS's software, it has more than enough of it it's own (10 times in fact).
