Received KEIKEN and it's not bad. Would be better if I understood Japanese. Yoko Mihara has a pretty big role, and Yukie Kagawa plays a suit-wearing lesbian. Reiko Oshida pretty much just sings that song and splits.

Meiko Kaji returns in this sequel by name only follow up. She plays the same character as before, but the previous film is not referred in any way and the movies are also somewhat different in terms of style. The original found a charming balance between ninkyo yakuza atmosphere and mini skirts. Wandering Ginza Butterfly 2 also combines modern and past, but in a different way. Gambling scenes are plenty and feel almost as lifted from an early Showa era set yakuza film. Miss Kaji also spends most of her time wearing kimono. However, at the same time the pic is filled with club scenes, neon lights and early 70’s disco music, similarly to the Delinquent Girl Boss movies. The atmostphere is modern, even if many of the seminal elements have roots in the past. Comedy is also a major part of the film.

In terms of casting Wandering Ginza Butterfly 2 further closers the Delinquent Girl Boss movies. Tooru Yuri has a big supporting role – comedic of course - Junzaburo Ban plays an old man with a problematic father-daughter relationship, and Yukie Kagawa, whose absense from the first film was almost distracting, is given a rather unexciting role as a night club hostess. The biggest addition to the cast, however, is Shinichi Chiba. Chiba gives a very humoristic acting performance as a stammering small time goon who is a bit afraid of bigger players. Chiba’s action skills are put into use in the great finale where he and Kaji slaughter three times as many people as there are members in villains Fujio Suga and Hideo Murota’s gang. This is a great conclusion to a highly entertaining film that is more or less on par with the original. The storyline may not be very strong, but there is a wide variety of familiar and enjoyble genre elements on display. Fans of positively charged girl gang films should thoroughly enjoy Wandering Ginza Butterfly 2.

Synapse’s dvd is, once again, brilliant and above Toei’s own standards. Extras feature the same Kazuhiko Yamaguchi interview, Kaji biography and poster gallery, and trailers that appeared on the previous dvd. What is new is an 11 minute interview with pinky violence expert J-Taro Sugisaku. No commentary this time.

Someone please tell me whether to buy this movie. I haven't the slightest interest in Sonny Chiba or gambling, but I like Yukie Kagawa. How's the music in the nightclub scenes?

How is it possible not to have the slightest interest in the greatest movie star of all time?!

+ you have Meiko Kaji and the usual Toei gang!

As for Kagawa and the music, unfortunately I can't remember anymore.

Lol. I watched some clips and this movie is not for me. Thank you for your response, though. As for Chiba, couldn't pick him out of a lineup. He may be quite a fellow, but he is not in movies that interest me. Kind of like that guy who asked about pinky violence, "People watch this stuff?" Different strokes.

Chiba is damn cool, but a fair few of his 70s films suffer from shakey-cam during the fights that results in seizures! He also seems to lack the same talent pool as HK's greatest - it seems he ends up facing Masashi Ishibashi in every film, with the same damn choreography!

Post by HungFist »

There was WWIII in relation to this topic some half a year ago...

I actually prefer Chiba's karate films to almost any HK kung fu films, with maybe a few exception (The Prodigal Son, Snake in the Eagle's Shadow, etc.) for number of reasons

- The intensity. While Chiba's films lack the state of art choreography found in HK, they often pack more intensity. HK old school fighting has a tendency to resemble Peking Opera - actors performing endless fancy moves in fight scenes that go on forever and merely suggest the fighters posses no danger to each other. Chiba's karate films on the other hand seem more inspired by samurai movies - every single strike could kill you, which makes the fights much more intense. It's a bit ironic considering the lack of full contact, as opposed to HK's true-full contact. But of course this doesn't apply to all HK films, and some of HK's total nutcases, such as The Prodigal Son and some of Jackie fights, are in a league of their own.

- The kick-ass factor. The Japanese 1970's action films were usually tightly packed (running around 85 min), ultra-violent and all around kick ass. HK martial arts films on the other hand often suffered from clumsy comedy bits and too much storyline. Neither the Japanese nor the Chinese had any storytelling talent, but the Japanese kept the storyline to absolute minimum, while too many HK films attempted to tell a dramatic story and ended up merely boring the viewer between the fight scenes.

- Toei casting! While perhaps a turn off for some, I love the fact that every time you watch a 70's Toei action film you can recognize at least a dozen cast members. They had like 20 regular actors for each genre, of which half could be found in any genre film. Masashi Ishibashi especially gets grand applause every time he makes a villain appearance (I must have seen him playing a bad guy for more than 20 times).

- Chiba. A wise man once said: "Even bad Chiba films have one good thing about them: Sonny Chiba". The most motherfucker karate asshole that ever walked the earth! Love the guy to death!

Of course some Chiba films had poor fights (no wonder with him making up to 7 martial arts films per year). The shakey cam is also true and regrettable, but I don't think it ruined the films in question. The Oyama films (especially Karate for Life) feature my favorite Chiba fights. In comparison, I don't care nearly as much for Sanada's fights, which are much more HK style...

The karate demon!

Hello! I just found this forum recently and I really like what I see :). Great topics about Japanese exploitation/cult cinema.

Anyway I have a question. Do below movies have English subtitles? Maybe some home-made subs?:

- Delinquent Girl Boss: Tokyo Drifters
- Delinquent Girl Boss: Ballad of Yokohama Hoods
- Terrifying Girls' High School: Women's Violent Classroom
- Terrifying Girls' High School: Delinquent Convulsion Group
- Terrifying Girls' High School: Animal Courage

If somebody have English subtitles for those movies, could you post them please?

HK Video will release a Teruo Ishii box set titled Sex and Fury Vol. 1 on November 12. The set will contain Ijô seiai kiroku: Harenchi (Un Amour abusif, déviant et dévergondé) (1969) (available also from Toei) and Porno Jidaigeki Bohachi Bushido (Les 8 Vertus bafouées) (1973) (available also from Toei and Discotek). And yes, that's Reiko Ike from Norifumi Suzuki's Sex & Fury in the cover art, for some reason...

That's really odd, even if they'll possibly release SEX & FURY as part of Volume 2, as I suspect. Maybe there was some shuffling around of titles and they didn't bother to change the cover art? Frankly, the only good thing I expect to come from this release are the subtitles for IJOU SEIAI KIROKU: HARENCHI. Since both included films already exist as Toei releases I fully expect HK Video to follow their established pattern and just do shoddy NTSC-PAL conversions. The only two times they did genuine PAL transfers was when they were dealing with films unavailable on NTSC DVD at the time: ORGIES OF EDO and YAKUZA'S LAW.

By the way, IJOU SEIAI KIROKU: HARENCHI has also just been released on DVD in Germany, following a previous VHS release there:

The German dub from the VHS is included, as is the Japanese audio and German dubtitles.

Terrribly sorry that I can't help--was this ever even released on VHS? I'd desparately love to have this as well. Anyone know how many films in this series? The alternate titles mess me up.

In fact, perhaps someone could help me organize these fragments of info on Daiei and Toho youth/pinky violence films. Not sure if some of this is wrong or if some of these are actually the same film...

Where can you get them that cheaply? The best I could find was on DDD for ~$11-15 with free shipping over $25
importcds.com

seems to be popular choice these days. biggest difficulty I have is making postage cost effective; they have semi-random shipping / cancellation and preorder ideas. sometimes, as I'm in the uk, I use hdwow and wait for discounts and sales which happen frequently. I got 'fairy in a cage' blu for £10 shipped.

edit. prices there now about $11 currently.

lots of great prices on this seller, always worth a check.

Just a quick question that hoping someone can answer. I've seen the series of Ero guro/pinky violence films by Terou Ishii referred to as the "Tokugawa Era" series. Here is what seems to be the agreed on list:

1) Tokugawa: Woman Genealogy [Tokugawa Onna Keizu] {徳川女系図} (5/1/1968)

2) Shogun's Joy of Torture aka Female Punishment of the Tokugawa [Tokugawa Onna Keibatsushi] {徳川女刑罰史} (9/28/1968)

3) Orgies of Edo [Zankoku Ijo Gyakutai Monogatari Genroku Jokeizu] {残酷異常虐待物語 元禄女系図} (1/9/1969)

4) Shameless: Abnormal and Abusive Love [Ijo Seai Kiroku Harenchi] {異常性愛記録 ハレンチ} (2/21/1969)

5) Inferno of Torture aka Hell's Tattooers [Tokugawa Irezumishi Seme Jigoku] {徳川いれずみ師 責め地獄} (5/2/1969)

6) Yakuza's Law aka A History of Yakuza Punishment: Lynch! [Yakuza Keibatsushi: Lynch!] {やくざ刑罰史 私刑} (6/27/1969)

7) Love and Crime [Meiji Taisho Showa Ryoki Onna Hanzaishi] {明治大正昭和 猟奇女犯罪史} (8/27/1969)

8) Bohachi Bushido: Code of the Forgotten Eight [Porno Jidaigeki: Bohachi Bushido] {ポルノ時代劇 忘八武士道} (2/3/1973) - questionable

Are there any missing and what are the general criteria to include or exclude a film? One reason I ask is that "Shameless: Abnormal and Abusive Love" and parts of "Yakuza's Law" are set in modern times, certainly not the Tokugawa Era. Are these simply determined by the subject matter and director?

I think the whole Ishii Tokugawa -definition is very loosely used (and often by people who haven't seen half of the films and/or don't even know what Tokugawa means). The films are also referred to as Ishii's torture movies, or Ishii's female punishment movies, which are equally loose (and often incorrect) labelings.

Shameless: Abnormal and Abusive Love has nothing to do with Tokugawa. It's set entirely in the 1960's.

As far as I remember Love and Crime doesn't have any Tokugawa parts either. And I suppose we can take the title (Meiji Taisho Showa Ryoki Onna Hanzaishi) as a clue, too, haha.
