City on Fire: Which would you buy?

Post by Markgway »

Assuming they were both in front of you at the same price and you could only take one home...

Here's a comparison from DVD Heaven:

It's very tough, because each has good points the other doesn't.

For me: the HKL is sharper, less cropped; whereas the IVL has better lighting and more natural colour.

Also does anyone have any opinions on the audio? Media Asia 5.1 vs IVL 2.0?

It really is a tough decision. People were really pissed about the lack of the blue filter of the HKL. But when I look at the IVL I notice that the HKL still has a bit of the blue tint to it.

If you are also looking for good extras, the HKL is the way to go. The IVL features an interview with Ringo Lam, though. I have never seen him in an interview before. I'm tempted.

The IVL is also very blurry (look at the license plates in the first shot) and cropped. It is much brighter, though.

I'd go for the HKL disc.

The IVL looks contrast boosted to me - take a look at the last shot; the holdup in the jewelry store. Look at the papers on the desc. On the HKL you can see some detail but on the IVL its just white.

In the 2nd to last shot the HKL wins as Chow Yun Fat has much more natural skin tone & the blood doesn't bloom red (actually its starting to be more on the orange side of red in the IVL).

The fact that the HKL is sharper pretty much nails it for me...

Cheers, guys.

Extras aren't a primary factor. A/V quality is.

I was leaning toward the HKL, but wanted to know what y'all thought.

How is the HKL's 5.1 remix?

Like their standard 5.1 remixes of films taken from Media Asia masters.

I was thinking the same. It's only when they use Fortune Star prints you need to worry.

IIRC the 5.1 remix sounded fine.

The subtitles on the HKL DVD look like dubtitles. They are matching the English dub almost word for word. Is the dub new though?

It's a new dub from memory.

Wow. Old thread. I've changed my view since then and sold my HKL. I now own the IVL release. The mono is worth it.
