I've got both the korean and french DVDs.

Very old comparison.
A new one with 1920x1080 caps would sure be interesting.

I used to be "the man who loves the movies you hate".
Now I'm just "that weird french guy with a cat avatar who comes to BnB once a year for no reason and then disappears again".

The R1 is the best, out of those two. The Tartan is NTSC to PAL but still a decent Remaster and it has DTS (over DD5.1) if that interests you.
It's been yonks but I also did a comparison before selling the R1 and it is better but not enough for me at the time to keep both. The Tartan is part of the box set.
If someone posts R1 captures plus timecodes I can add the Tartan. I don't think it's available outside of the box set though. The single disc used to at least be the SHITE cinema transfer version. When Tartan were hideous.

I don't know if this was what gas was talking about, but because the Tartan DVD is NTSC>PAL then there's not always the same scene frame change between both discs. For instance I took a few grabs where the corresponding frame on the r2uk disc were the usual interlaced "half & half" inserts.bradavon wrote:Urm, it's the same movie .

Re: The SD-DVD & HD Comparisons thread
Few I couldn't be bothered to make or didn't upload in the end:
Tokyo Zombie - R1 vs. R2J
R2J has much higher bitrate but actual quality is about the same.
Empire of Passion - R1 vs. R2FR
R1 (a Criterion) is a lot nicer than the R2FR which hasn't had any restoration done.
Night and Fog in Japan - R2FR vs. R2J
R2FR is anamorphic and the extra resolution is rather beneficial.
Hausu - R2J vs. R2UK
I should have done a comparison for this one really. R2J in comparison to the R2UK looks kind of faded but exactly as you'd expect it to based on other similar films of the era, low contrast and looking too bright. The R2UK has had colour correction done and a lot of playing with contrast so you lose shadow detail and other detail amidst the darkness unfortunately, but I have a feeling that it's still better off for it. Hung has an opinion on this I expect.
Unknown Pleasures - R2ES vs. R2UK
Same transfer.
Platform - R2ES vs. R2UK
R2ES is much less murkier and better looking.

You've got to be joking, I ain't wading through three years worth of comparison reviews just because you're too idle to use the search engine!

The search engine on this forum is dreadful though to be fair
