Nah, that's perfectly sane in comparison to paying $40 for a 25min long anime episode.

Bandai Visual are fools if they think that us Western consumers will so willingly be ripped off like their Japanese customerbase. $40RRPs, no dubs (for people who care, which are numerous), OVAs released one episode at a time. All this for discs pressed/encoded and inserts printed in Japan under the creators' supervision? GTFO.

However, I welcome to have additional JC footage as I am a JC collector. While skipping through it though, I noticed that they had the wrong music over the credits (the soundtrack from part 1 actually). How about the DD disc?
DD is the same as the IVL.

The extra 16m of footage are boring when integrated into the film. Should have been put on as extras. But Fortune Star appear to do HD masters for only one version of any film and here chose the longest possible. Bad move.

Even the regular 106m HK cut sags a bit compared to the 96m international cut (unfortunately only available with an English dub). The people who edited the international versions knew what they were doing (except for The Young Master which was a bit of a disaster).

Is it me, or does the DD Hard Boiled: Ultimate Edition, fail to live up to its name, the extras seem weak to me for some reason. I have the Tartan Collector Edition, I may be happy with that.

Well Ultimate compared to all the HK releases means a lot :D

15 bucks for a remasterered titles with lots of extras (comparatively speaking) is decent. You guys are way to fussy.

Yi you seriously don't spend more than 10 bucks on DVDs? That's really stingy. 10 bucks is only £5 in my language, sure that's even better but £7 is still very good. Especially for the 2 disc releases.

Now if you disagree the contents of the DVDs aren't much cop then fine but that's an entirely different point to the quality vs. price point. Hence still good value for money.
When the Shaw titles come down to under $10 (same price as the HK imports) then I'll reconsider.
Like that's ever going to happen. You know full well USA DVDs sell for more than HK DVDs. Besides the HK imports aren't exactly mustard.

I'll probably pick up SPL but need to see my HK DVD first.

The HK DVD of SPL is very good if you only care about picture quality. For extras, it is definitely the DD disc. I reviewed both versions:

.
Hey Brad, Yeah I'm serious. I hardly ever spend more then 10 bucks on a single DVD. 10 bucks in euros, so 10 euro. So that's about 6 or 6.5 pounds.
Obviously exceptions would be tv series or other boxsets.

But yeah, wait a while and most movies will be under 10 bucks.

I'm sure I'd be willing to make an exception for a few titles, like a good version of Days of Being Wild, or Ashes of Time, etc etc... but especially with mainsteam english movies, I wait.
Might be 'stingy', but I aint got much money, and I dont mind waiting for a sale to come buy. I actually enjoy buying great movies for as little money as possible. Plus local shops often have 3 for 15, or 3 for 25 actions...

So yeah, I definately prefer waiting.

That's a long while for some DVDs, especially 2 disc releases.

Yeah I know. I'd only upgrade if the film were worth it. I need to see my HK DVD first. For £6.97 I'd upgrade, the DD has enough extras to warrant it.
but especially with mainsteam english movies, I wait.
DD release mainstream English films??? :D

Agreed but they'll take ages to get as low as 10 bucks, especially Asian films. Way longer than a few months.

It's a shame VirutalDubMod hasn't been updated for ages, it's effectively abandonware.

I'd be thrilled to see a new Chow Yun Fat interview or something but too bad he didn't participate. The extras might seem weak but atleast they're extras. Tartan's, Mei Ah's and HKVideo's have little or no extras at all.

hey,

HK Video had a Tony Leung interview and an interview featurette with John Woo, David Wu, Terence Chang and Phillip Kwok. All totalling about 80 minutes and all in English except Kwok's segments.

# Feature Length Audio Commentary by Hong Kong Cinema Expert Bey Logan
# A Baptism Of Fire: A Featurette With Iconic Director John Woo
# Hard Boiled Location Guide
# Mad Dog Bites Again: An Interview With Leading Villian Kwok Choi
# Trailer Gallery (Hong Kong Theatrical Trailer & US Promotional Trailer)
# Partner In Crime: An Interview with Producer Terence Chang
# Art Imitates Life: An Interview with co-star Phillip Chan

EDIT:
"SOUND
English/Cantonese 5.1
Cantonese DTS
English Mono"

WTF? Where's the Cantonese mono?

The original Tartan had a John Woo interview removed for the SE. I suspect that's a mistake regarding Cantonese Mono or at least hope it is.

It might be a case where they've included both a newer English dub as well as the old one in mono. Of course that's just a guess and I hope it's just a mistake.

Well, I don't have this on DVD at all (only version I have is the Japanese LD), so this seems like the best version for me to pick up.
