Yeah thats why I want HD DVD, but then I miss out on Blu Ray

its killing me waiting to take the plunge into HD dvds.

I'm waiting for Samsung to produce a budget version of their upcoming dual-player.

Don't care how long it takes.

I can wait to get the right one (and best value).

It's not like DVD is VHS.

Depends on what size screen you have

on mine dvds look good, but I know from watching HD stuff from my PC pluged into my TV that HD is staggering at times

Still thats why we are waiting, I have loads of standard dvds still to watch, so gives me time anyway

well i have both,blu-ray & hd-dvd.

i don't blame people waiting though,the leap from dvd to hd is nowhere near as big as the one from vhs to dvd.DVD is a great format.

Honestly from what I have seen if you have a Big screen HD DVDS are as big of a jump as VHS to DVD was, as hell playing dvds on emense screens isnt the best thing to watch

seen dvds running on 5+ inchers and they look quite nasty, but HD is so perfect for big screens. I wish I had got a 50+ incher, maybe in the future

when HD is standard and the next super format is coming.

Romero you're talking shit, no offence but it's not a screen size issue VHS is an analogue format from the 1980s which brings it all the issues of an analogue tape system. Obviously 1080p HD looks amazing but there's no way it's the leap from VHS to DVD that's stupid thinking.

Tape to CD was huge but CD to DVD-A/SACD isn't so big (still big though). Not that you'd know that.

As soon as the Samsung Combo is out and assuming it's not something silly like £800 I'll be getting it. I'd pay as much as £500, maybe £600 but that's pushing it.

You have a USA PS3 right? Any troubles with BD regional coding yet and wishing you could get a UK BD that isn't out in The States?

I don't give a shit tbh there are two formats like some now I can get a Combo player.

Ah, I would've paid only 50p for BHC3 as well.

Yeah, you'd think that someone like John Landis would've been able to make a decent comedy film with American Wolf (which is great, you should watch your copy), Animal House and Blues Brothers under his belt.

Only someone who hasn't seen it action would say that. Go watch someone playing Gears of War in 1080p, then ask them to boot it up in SD.

A lot of uk blu-ray discs are in fact region-free, for example Hellboy & Kung Fu Hustle play fine on my usa PS3.

I shit myself when I saw them WMV encoded clips a year or so back in Semi HD, and HD dvds are better than them, so they must be stunning

it just makes me never want to watch a DVD or TV ever again, but hell I cannot watch stuff on my PC its makes too much noise

still again if you have these things on a smaller scren, well putting it mildly its pointless still I say.

I have seen HD in action on King Kong (HD-DVD) and Pearl Harbour (BD). KK looked amazing Pearl Harbour was merely better but neither were as big a jump DVD is from VHS. That's obvious to me anyway, look at how the different technologies work.

Again I will say this? How big were the screens they were on. As thats what matters most.

DVDs look great on smaller screens, HD stuf look a bit better. On BIG screens dvds look poor, HD looks mindblowing. The bigger you go, the better it looks. The differnece is staggering so far from everything I have seen, and cannot wait to get my stuff set up properly

I think I read that you can only really see the difference between 720P and 1080P if you have at least a 50 inch screen.

Yup many say that, still it also depends on how close you sit as well. I sit back for dvds (6.5 foot as they look dodgy closer), and close as hell to the screen (2 foot) for HD stuff on my screen so far, havent even tried 1080 stuff yet only 720, theres so much to see at 720, never mind 1080

Romero I don't doubt your claims for a second I never did. What I said was HD is not the leap from DVD that DVD was from VHS. It's got nothing to do with the TV size in this context but the underlying technologies behind them.

DVD was a revelation when it was launched from years of even sub broadcast quality recording. HD is amazing I never said it wasn't but as big a leap no way. Put on a video and it will remind you of how long overdue DVD was.

As for all this talk of the distance you sit I sit a comfortable distance so my eyes don't get strained. Any more technical gets into geekvile IMO. TV sizes aside talking in imperial measurements means zip to me too. Six feet away huh? I've no idea how far that is and don't want to.

I've seen that site before, is it accurate? I wasn't sure how much I should rely on it. It doesn't help that the listed of Region B titles is woeful low.

It's so annoying when they state it's one region but infact the disc is something completely different :shock:

As a rule of thumb it looks like you're safe if the studio is "Warner" or "Paramount" If it's from "Fox" it will be region locked but "Sony" and "Disney" it's a mixed back. Odd to see Casino Royale UK is Region Free but Casino Royale USA is Region A locked. I'd definitely opt for the UK disc in this case, unless it was much more expensive.

I'm actually more interested to hear about the independent labels (such as Lionsgate) as the main studios release worldwide anyway. It's good to hear some Lionsgate titles are Region Free.

...and I can't get my head around Imperial measurements, miles mean nothing to me. Ironically I can't process people's heights in anything but feet and inches and monitor/screen dimensions in anything but inches (the screen is 130cm, what?).

I only get cm's, meters, km's etc...
Km's is about 1,5 times a mile I THINK. So 60 miles is about 90 km's?

I just know I'm 6ft tall (1,81 cms) and my monitor is 17 inch.
