The Equalizer (USA, 2014) [Flight] - 3/5
Surprisingly old school vigilante film packs some excellent actors and features short but great build-up, after which is becomes an endless cavalcade of brutal violence. And that's not necessarily a bad thing, although it will probably leave some of the more civilized (clueless) viewers scratching their heads. I didn't recognize Chloë Grace Moretz (as a Russian speaking hooker) in this one; I was just wondering when she's gonna get her boobs out. Obviously that wasn't going to happen, she's only 17.

The Fuller Brush Man (1948-USA) **½
Useless dope that can't hold a job down tries his hand at a door-to-door selling and finds himself embroiled in the murder of sanitation commissioner. Enjoyable Red Skelton vehicle; takes time hitting its stride, but achieves a bright, slapstick finish.

I pretty much agree with Mark on this. Violent thriller wastes almost no time getting from one action scene to another. It's forgettable but pretty well done and entertaining at the same. Unfortunately the in-flight version I viewed was censored for language and possibly sex/nudity (did someone get naked?) while the violence was no doubt left intact. Amusingly enough, I recognized the language censorship because the Japanese trailer, which I've seen a number of times in movie theatre, features the uncensored "Don't fucking lie to me" line...

So far this year I've recorded 538 films watched (probably more than that actually watched) so I think I could top 600 easy if I really went for it, but I've just done my usual Halloween marathon & I think I need to chill out with a bit of gaming throughout November to charge me up for the usual Christmas film marathon .

That is one audacious goal, but heck you are almost there (hope you do not get burnt out.) Actually icheckmovies is good for going against preexisting movie lists like IMDB top 250 etc..., give the site a look through to see if it is something you might be interested in.

The crazy thing about that stat though is that I only counted a film once, whereas in reality I watched many of the films in my list more than once (when I was working on a review/podcast). The real stat if you include repeat viewings was probably over 700!

Three morons lose their groom during a stag weekend in Vegas.
Cleverly plotted, but obnoxious comedy with no real laughs.

Congratulations. That's a crazy amount of films. You should consider an online list. Any new movie-related goals for this year? I ended up somewhere in the 400s (including repeats) with an additional 200+ or so shorts.

I'm interested in the Stat's topic re HungFist. I could come up with a lot of stats (even more if I kept it in a database, but for fun I've just been keeping track of my movies via Word document and various sites.)

Icheckmovies does allow that (it is the default order of "Your checked movies.") However, it is only for the first time checks (none of the systems I have seen allow for multiple viewed dates -- I had a work around at listsofbests but that site is now gone.) Of course you could get around that by unchecking and checking again I believe.

Well, just put some numbers in there

I think it should be pretty free style. Some basics aside (how many films this year, how many in different formats, from which countries) people should focus on something that is worth focusing on in their year (e.g. how many Shaw Bros. films this year) and that's different for everyone (I didn't see any Shaw films...)

Top 10 lists also should fit in there + other lists like favourite tracking shots of the year, best boobs, or whatever might be interesting, perhaps accompanied with comments.

Anyway, I'll see about it sometime soon (hopefully) if no one wants to start.

The Searchers (1956)- I kinda liked this, but not something I would ever revisit. Good to finally see a John Wayne movie. I like him. I can see why Al Bundy would choose a manly man like this as his favorite actor.

Give this one a few years after you have seen many more westerns and then watch it again. I do think you need to see some more John Ford directed westerns. His style was very influential and you will often see his name mentioned by many critics and directors (not just American critics and directors like Martin Scorsese whose Taxi Driver has big influences from that film, but directors like Akira Kurosawa as well; influential on French auteurs as well.) In some ways in that movie Wayne is going a bit against type. There are good reasons why this is often named as one of the most important and critically popular westerns of all-time.

But yeah he is normally in that heroish mode like Randolph Scott and Gary Cooper. I am a fan, but you will definitely find detractors. He also considered himself a "reactor" which means he acts best when he is reacting with the actors he is around. Usually the better actors with him the better he would do. Now if you see his early B-westerns from the 1930s you see an almost too stylized actor. He would improve quite a bit over the years. His performances grew on me over the years, they might do the same for you.

The Perfect Weapon (1991-USA) **½
Kempo expert with a bad temper (Jeff Speakman) returns home to avenge his friend's murder by the Korean mob. A rare A-picture martial arts movie of the era, this marked a fairly good debut for tough guy Speakman - sadly for him it was all downhill from here. Plenty of action, not so much character development, most of which was hacked out of the theatrical version (prominently billed Mariska Hargitay is reduced to an extra). Reportedly the original 111m cut has shown up on US cable TV. Anyone here seen it?

Clockwise (1985-UK) **
An uptight school headmaster obsessed with punctuality (John Cleese, perfectly cast) misses his train, leading to a desperate rush to reach an important conference on time. Mild, very British farce; for Cleese fans only.

It's been years since I have seen Perfect Weapon (last watched on VHS.) I just picked up the Olive R1 release of it (no idea how long it is.)

I've seen Clockwise a few times, yet it never really sticks in my head. That is rare for John Cleese. Quick story: I was eating at a restaurant in Modesto CA and while I was looking outside this long lanky figure goes walking by these large windows in an almost Ministry of Silly Walks type of gait. I stated "Look there's John Cleese" which the whole restaurant then turned their heads to watch him go on by as his head was taking in the sites as he walked seemingly bemused by what he saw. He was performing at the Gallo Center later that day so I found it hilarious that he was just wandering around all by himself in another part of Downtown Modesto.

A young executive is invited by his boss to a monthly dinner in which guests must bring the biggest random idiot they can find. Awful, unfunny comedy paints Steve Carell as an annoying idiot and then expects you to feel sympathy for him. Gag.

Paths of Glory (1957-USA) ***
Three French soldiers are falsely accused of cowardice for a sham court martial.
Cynical Kubrick war drama, comparable to, though less dynamic than Full Metal Jacket.
Kirk Douglas is strong, the supporting cast a mixed bag (Timothy Carey is wretched in an inappropriate performance that has to be seen to be believed).

Birdman 2/5 This movie has been garnered with praise,oscar contender etc...i found it a pretentious bore in the main.Michael Keaton plays a washed up actor previously famous for playing super hero Birdman trying to make a comeback by acting and directing a broadway play.The cast includes Ed Norton,Naomi Watts,Emma Stone but they are such an obnoxious and unlikeable bunch you can't connect with them.some nice camerawork in there is one thing in it's favour.
