Can we edit the very first post where we would just put a list with Kar-wai's films and next to them, the best DVD version available.

Similar to the Kitano-thread we once head. City Hunter made the list for us back then. BTW, what happened to him?

Brad I notice you said (about ITMFL) that the Criterion looks much better than the European R2 DVDs. (On some captures the R1 looks much sharper IMO). Why then do Beaver say the R2 TFI is the winner at the bottom?

Read the comments on DVD Beaver it's not my site. I believe it's because of the minor cropping (come on it's so minor!) and apparently it was this way in the cinema (i.e - French master).

DVD Beaver have changed their mind on this title many, many times. Besides that's that their opinion; I don't have to agree with them and considering the first post is solely IMO it's bound to have people disagreeing.

This is a title that it's all subjective and both are very good (as I said). IMO the picture is better on the Criterion not so much because of the sharpness but because of the vibrant colours. Put this way I have the French DVD and have no plans to upgrade but if I were to buy it now I'd get the Criterion.

The Criterion has that 50 minute documentary too which is very quality. In the case of extras I believe it's quality (Criterion R1 DVD) vs. quantity (TF1 French DVD).

At the end of the day you decide. Some of WKW's titles there is a clear winner, others there is not.

I'd say that would be the Tartan UK R2 but strangely it's usually over 15 nicker.

Anyone who missed out on the R4 2-disc LE the first time around can grab it now. 300 units were allocated for NZ retail, it will be released March 15th.

I just pre-ordered (and paid in advance for) my copy.

Did I forget to mention I've fitted my new 4 wheeled lady with an anti-Dutch security device

The car stereo is awesome. You press the eject button and out pops a USB caddy containing a 2.5" hard disk. It takes sizes up to 250Gb. I have a 30Gb model as that's more than enough. I bought a second hand hard disk off eBay.

I was reading the review of the R4 Happy Together (over at Michaeldvd) and it looks like it has the same rubbish transfer as the R2 Artificial Eye release.

I was reading the DVDBeaver R1 vs. R2UK comparison for 2046 and came across the following sentence:- "...the Wong Kar-wai approved Tartan."

So all releases that use the French masters have been director-approved? If so, then awesome. Fuck the R1 then, once I get the R4 2-discer LE tin the only missing worthwhile extra will be the alternative ending probably. That "anatomy of scene" extra on the R1 sounds like a waste of time, I've seen a few of those (eg on the Fight Club and Men in Black 2 SEs) and they're massive bores - I doubt this 2046 one has alternative angles either. (you basically are shown a scene at different stages of construction - eg storyboard, blue screen, plate shots, animatic, wireframes of CGI, finished scene, etc.)

The R1 has a messed up DD5.1 soundtrack too.

The R4 LE is as definitive as we're going to get UNLESS Tartan decide to re-release 2046 using the French DVD like they did for ITMFL but then again that needed a re-release much more.

I'm happy with my R1 box set but some might be interested. So far these new versions are only in the box set. I'd like to check out the DOBW commentary but not as part of this box set. I didn't think much of ATGB.
