White House Down (2013-USA) **½

Utter nonsense, but good fun with it.
Better than the similar Olympus Has Fallen.

getting to your local cinema more these days then Mark :icon_suspect: ;)

Bad Grandpa 2/5 Not a fan of Johnny Knoxville & Jackass really,ok in very short bursts i suppose. This varies the format by having a storyline featuring Knoxville dressing up as a recently deceased 86 year old man charged with taking his grandson to his estranged father.Filmed with hidden cameras with real life public (though some of this definitely seems staged to me) it's funny in parts but there's not enough here to stretch this to a 100 minute movie. The kid is excellent though.

Over-elaborate caper is fun while it lasts... but leaves you feeling hollow afterward like the victim of a cheated magic trick.

Bloody hell, even I never made it past 45 in one month :o That makes more than 4 movies a day on average. Includes short films?

You sure that's not a typing mistake?

I think we should all bow down to Shingster. :notworthy:

Movie 43: Extended Int'l version (2013-USA) *

Uniquely awful all-star sketch parody tries every trick in the book to offend its audience with gross-out humour. The result is a lot more gross than humorous (though I'd be lying if I said I didn't laugh at Hugh Jackman's neckballs).

Actually I'm not sure I made 130 now, basically I watched exactly 120 films in preparation for the serial Horror film podcast I recorded throughout that month and I caught other films outside of that (Halloween night round mates, etc). Of the 120 I watched for the podcast I would say about 5-6 were under 40mins (early silent films) and no more than another 10 were under 70mins (Universal monster movies and Val Lewton, etc). :D

I'm gonna start rating some films again, but will only maintain if people write some stuff under my posts. Even 'oh nice film' :D

Forbidden Planet (1956) 8/10
Classic sci fi yarn. Unsophisticated story still manages to entertain despite being often silly or charmingly dated (attitudes to women etc). It's influence on the genre is still being felt today. Leslie Neilsen is great as chief of the completely doltish crew. Effects still occaionally stun. Incredible interior matte shots especially

It's a very good movie, I think I gave it the same score. Agreed the effects are stunning for the time.

It has been several years since i have seen this (do own it on DVD), but this is one of the better of a great decade of sci-fi including Klaatu barada nikto!. Agree great matte shots, score (apparently an electronic score on a magnetic tape which was a first for its time) and sets. Just noticed that it had one Academy Award nomination for special effects.

2013 stats:
458 full length movies watched (about 26-30 in the theater, I would have to go over my list to figure exactly)
272 shorts watched
48 books read

That electronic 'tone/pulse' type score really reminded be of sound effects used by the BBC in the John Pertwee era of Doctor Who. At times I thought they must've nicked some of it!

The Doctor Who trivia connection continues to the Tom Baker story Planet of Evil, which borrows HEAVILY from Forbidden Planet

See now that's impressive! I might have a crack at beating that this year as I've already watched over 50films this month! :D So do you keep a list of what you've seen complete with mini-comments/ratings? I can never be arsed myself!

Holy Crap 50 films this month already!

I always keep a word document of movies/shorts/books/tv series for each year.

Last year for full length movies I also used listsofbests (I did for several years; the link is to my 2013 movies) Here is my icheckmovies link which I recommend if you do not already use. Any link sites you use please post here.

Now in 2012 I broke 500 movies watched which was the highest I have ever done (I have 500 exactly on my 2012 listsofbests, but I did missed several films when I tallyed my word document.)

I occasionally do full length reviews or capsule reviews but not for each film watched. Here's what I watched so far this month in January:

The Poor Little Rich Girl (1917: Maurice Tourneur) Silent
Holiday Affair (1949: Don Hartman)
Forty Guns (1957: Samuel Fuller) Rewatch
Pain & Gain (2013: Michael Bay) ***/***
Monster House (2006: Gil Kenan)
The Internship (2013: Shawn Levy) **½/****
Mud (2013: Jeff Nichols) ***/****
You’re Telling Me! (1934: Erle C. Kenton) Rewatch
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003: Peter Jackson) Extended Rewatch
The Golden Compass (2007: Chris Weitz)
Where Eagles Dare (1968: Brian G. Hutton)
47 Ronin (1994: Kon Ichikawa) Japan
Ronin (1998: John Frankenheimer) Rewatch
Abbott and Costello Meet the Mummy (1955: Charles Lamont)
Jack and Jill (2011: Dennis Dugan) Rewatch
48 Hrs. (1983: Walter Hill)
Fred Claus (2007: David Dobkin)
A Connecticut Yankee in King Author’s Court (1949: Tay Garnett)
Another 48 Hrs. (1990: Walter Hill)
Peter Pan (1953: Clyde Geronimi, Wilfred Jackson) Animated
The Poor Little Rich Girl (1917: Maurice Tourneur) commentary by Scott Eyman
Dragon aka Wu Xia (2011: Peter Chan) Hong Kong/China 2012 ***/****
Her (2013: Spike Jonze) **½/****
The Lion King 2: Simba’s Pride (1998: Darrell Rooney, Rob LaDuca) V
Ip Man: The Final Fight (2013: HermanYau) Hong Kong **½/****
The Hoodlum (1919: Sidney Franklin) Silent
Abbott and Costello Meet Jerry Seinfeld (1994: Daniel Helfgott) TV
Angel Face (1952: Otto Preminger)
Point Break (1991: Kathryn Bigelow)
Drug War (2013: Johnnie To) China/Hong Kong ***½/****

The reason I have ratings on the newer films is because I end up doing best of lists for the past several years. So I keep track.

1990: The Bronx Warriors (1982)

I love almost all of Castellari's 70's flicks, but as he moved into the 80's, things went a little askew. As a whole, I don't care too much for this film. Seen it a couple of times before, and hated it. But certain scenes here and there still have the old Castellari touch, and the credit intro is awesome. Im slowly warming to this, I guess. I loooooove The Warriors and I like Escape From New York, even though I think it's one of Carpenter's weaker efforts from this period. And let's face it, these are the flicks that Castellari are aping here. But sometimes the movie just looks and feels too cheap and cheesy for its own good. A lot of individual scenes play very nicely, while others are just groan inducing or unintenionally hilarious. An uneven but somewhat enjoyable movie.

Grudge Match (2013-USA) **½

Cheesy boxing comedy gets all its mileage from two A-list stars (Stallone - as the likeable one - and DeNiro - as the obnoxious one) who give more effort than the patchy script deserves. A few funny lines are spouted here and there, and the climactic bout is tougher than expected, but best keep expectations at a sensible medium. Alan Arkin is always a welcome presence, even playing caricature, but do we really need another Chris Tucker in Kevin Hart? Kim Basinger - as the love interest - looks in great shape for a woman pushing 60.

It's funny I've found Escape from New York to be really hard to get through on repeated viewings. So I'll agree with you there. Perhaps because there's so little story going on.

Having said that I do need to rebuy in HD ! :D
