I've never seen the point of keeping a film in it's crap state either.

Loads of horror fans don't like watching their old classic films cleaned up and restored. They claim that it loses that dungy bootleg feel or some such shit.

I understand where they are coming from, but prefer cleaned transfers myself, too.

Tarentino is an overrated idiotic fanboy.

Anyway. Saw Hitch tonight (I know... that's not the smart thing to say after you just criticized 'King Quentin' ), and surprisingly, I actually enjoyed it.

I've always felt Will Smith was a great actor, and he's just very good in this movie. He might not be a Denzel with the intensity and the moodiness etc, but he has a lot of charisma and is just a very good actor that comes across great onscreen.

I felt the casting was great from start to finish. As mentioned before, WIll SMith is great, but so is Eva Mendez. I hadnt really seen her before, but I can tell why people adore her. She's not just a Hollywood airhead or bimbo, or a stuck-up overserious british actress... or whatever. She's just a fun and selfconfident woman. It comes across. She's extremely likeable.
Maybe she's a puppy-kicking nazi when she's not acting and in the privacy of her own home, but on-screen, she radiates pleasantness... (that's a word, right!? No? Darn...)

Kevin James doesnt have as big a role as the poster and trailer would make you believe, as he's more of a 3rd wheel. The main focus is on Will, and Eva.
But when Kevin IS on-screen, he fills it! (ba-da-boom!)
Not just physically (he's a large hump of man-hunk!), but he plays the bumbling fool convincingly without overdoing it. It's nice that they didnt overdo his shy personality, cause when those guys were being idiots at the party, he showed he can bite a bit as well... (I'm not making that fat joke... make your own, you lazy bastards)

So overall... it was just a very nice movie... a romantic comedy that was actually not overdoing the sentimental crap, and it actually had memorable and likeable characters. It's a smooth movie.

So why am I only gonna give this a 7 outta 10?

I'm not really sure TBH. I felt the cast and their acting was fantastic, pacing and premise were good, it all looked OK, and what it did it did well.
But the last 20 minutes orso... it's hard to explain. It just didnt work that well for me. It felt people, and especially Will, were falling out of character a bit. At the same time it felt rushed, and overlong...
And that's weird, cause the whole movie was already steering towards this conclusion, so I wasnt surprised... but the way Will behaved etc... it just didnt completely work for me.

So... 7 outta 10. Could have been an 8 outta 10 if the ending had been more memorable. Casting and acting were great though. Not just the leads, but the whole cast was just splendid. You dont see that often in a movie, and especially not in romantic comedies.

BTW, the asian chick who hooked up with the goofy geeky guy in the beginning, was pretty nice. I found out she's called Navia Nguyen and she's been in a few movies and all, but pictures dont really do her justice. But she looked nice in the few short scenes she was in in this movie.

Wow Yi. So much text about a film that's your typical formulaic Hollywood tripe.

Will Smith does make most films watchable though. Like that horrible early 90's film with Whoopi Goldberg and Ted Dansen that I don't recall the name of.

I liked Kevin James in his sitcom King of Queens, Jerry Stiller as his nagging father-in-law stole the show though.

Made in America.

It's the one where Will goes to donate sperm.

Yeah, it's typical hollywood tripe, which is why I gave it a 7 I guess... but it's typical hollywood tripe done very well... so gave it a 7! Acting and casting was just perfect. All the other stuff was at least OK. Maybe it missed a big Jerry McQuire style tearjerker ending... or SOMETHING that would have made it an american classic. The potential was certainly there, with this cast and this premise. But somehow they did manage to not quite succeed in that in the end.

I've always liked Will. It's just such a huge shame he hardly ever picks good movies. Men in Black 1 & 2, Independence Day... enjoyable but not great. Just popcorn fluff. Wild Wild West: havent seen it but probably equally enjoyable but forgettable. Ali? Good, but boring performance. The problem isnt the movie, but the fact that the REAL Ali was just so much more exciting. I'd rather watch a documentary about the real Ali.
The movie showed Ali how he was in private when the cameras were OFF, and apparently he was a quiet man... but in the documentaries, the camera is ON (obviously), and he just jumps of the screen.
Plus I never bought Smith as Ali. It was a very good acting performance... but Smith just isnt Ali. They look too different, and Smith just doesnt have IT that Ali had. No-one does.

Havent seen The Pursuit of Happiness yet. Heard good things about it so will definately watch it some time. Not sure if I can stand the kid as he comes across as a bit of a wise-ass in some of the interviews I've seen when this came out. Plus I'm never quite eager to watching tearjerkers... and this seems like one that would have me crying like a little baby...

King of Queens was a nice show. Not great, but enjoyable and a nice main cast. Not the best writing though. The performances by the 3 leads kinda make the show likeable and a success. Stiller was good. I didnt like him much at first, but he did actually have some classic lines and it's just a very memorable character.

Made in America: Mediocre movie. Will Smith was ok in it, but TBH his role was too small. Ted Danson and Whoopy... I dont care that much about them. And the girl...I hardly remember her. So a pretty forgetable movie in the end.

Woman. Harden up. :D

TBH Will was dreadful as Ali and that's what sunk that film for me. Everything else was fine:- the script, Mann's direction, the supporting cast (especially Jamie Foxx).

The performances of the lead actors can make or great a biopic. Eg Walk the Line was so pedestrian writing and direction-wise, what made that film was Joaquin's and Reese Witherspoon's performances.

Call me a woman again and I'll scratch your eyes out!!!

Well... the acting performance, as in portraying a succesfull yet at times troubled boxer, was great. It just wasnt Ali. Plus the movie itself was just boring, so that certainly didnt help.
I'm not a big fan of Jamie Foxx. I though he was just BAD in his TV Show... and I never liked him on In Living Color. I dont know. To me, he just isnt a great actor. He was good in Any Given Sunday though. Havent seen Jarhead, Ray and Collateral yet.

Havent seen it yet, but looking forward to it. I like Phoenix as an actor and Witherspoon is ok as well.
I really wish Phoenix would have been the new Batman, instead of Bale. Phoenix has everything to make a great Wayne. Not that Bale was particularly bad... but to me, Phoenix is like a spot-on resemblance, with the dark eyes and the piercing deep eyes and strong jaws etc. (Wow... that actually sounded like I have a crush on the guy, didnt it?)

Oh he's a rubbish comedian, his strength is in his acting.

I'll give those a try then :)
Was already planning on seeing Collateral (despite Cruise) and Jarhead (love Gyllenhaal - great actor).

There was a huge hype and buzz about Ray when it came out. Mostly because it was close to the Oscars, probably. I'll eventually see it.

Will Smith is good in the Pursuit of Happyness, I would def recommend at least seeing this movie. His younger son is also very good, and the story is quite sad. Very different from Will other movies.

Ray and Collateral are both very good films in their own right.

Jamie Foxx was outstanding in Ray, watch that for by far his best work. Will Smith is excellent in Ali.

Replacement Killers Extended Cut (Blu-Ray) 3/5

I know this movie isn't very highly regarded but it entertains me and that's what counts :) plenty of action and lots of gunplay make this a decent hour and a half or so.and of course mia sorvino looks pretty good in this. superb transfer on this disc which is coded for all regions.

slasher13 wrote:Exactly, that what I thought as well, this really annoyed me, but the fake effect was over in the 2nd half, which was better I think
I still noticed a couple of jumps in the second half but they may have been bald misplaced edits which wouldn't surprise me since the whole thing was so inconsistent.

I quite like Replacement Killers. The trouble is though, it is very average. Certainly not one I'd spend HD pricing on.

Laputa: Castle in the Sky: 4,99 / 5
Firmly anchored in Mononoke territory.
A bit long, though.

My Neighbour Totoro: 3 / 5
Not bad, but too childish.

Kiki's Delivery Service: 4 / 5
Surprisingly pleasant.

Hot Fuzz: 2 / 5
Was not amused.
Was it supposed to be funny ?

Live free or Die Hard: 1 / 5
I will only say one thing: the fighter plane stunt.
I mean... Come on !
Even Steven Seagull would complain about the lack of realism in that scene.

Useless garbage.

Taxi 4: 0 / 5
The horror... the horror.
Stay away. For the love of God, stay away from this film.

Do you normally like British comedy Tom? British humour is usually very different to French comedy.

My god there's a Taxi 4? I quite liked Taxi 2 but really both it and Taxi are so poor. Taxi 3 barely got a DVD release over here.

I liked Die Hard 4 but agreed it was so stupid in places, especially as you say the Fighter Jet scene. IMO Die Hard which is brilliant and Die Hard 2 which is good are worth buying. Die Hard 3 was a major let down, boring in places really.

p.s - What on earth is a 4.99 score? :D
