so in your opinion blu-ray is ps3 or nothing :? i doubt early adopters were told of this problem when they bought their players.

I thought it was common sense. I bought a PS3 so that if Blu-ray failed, I'd easily be able to sell my machine. How would you easily sell a standalone Blu-ray player if the format failed?? Also all the reviews were saying that the PS3 was as good a Blu-ray player as any, and it has the least problems with discs out of all of them (if any). It's always getting firmware updates too for functionality and whatnot.

The Blu-ray players were like a grand when the PS3 was £400 odd, so I don't know why anyone would go for a standalone :?

As you know i have 2 ps3's in my house,a uk and a usa one. but it still stinks that These megabuck companies cannot produce a solid, affordable standalone. not everyone wants a games console for their films.

dvdvision wrote:Agreed, there's nothing to boast about, all the BR fanboys going nuts over the HD forums like they have won vietnam, are truly missing something important : they will be restricted to what they will be able to view, and they are going to pay HUGE prices for Sony BR, as there's no more competition in the HD domain. Plus if you got an early BR player, you're much more fucked than anyone with an HD player, the forthcoming profile bonuses WON'T WORK EVER.

Now that's funny. At least, HD player will still read any HD-DVD (and probably once Toshiba release an update that create BR reading emulation, also all BR including the bonuses), while people who trusted Sony will be FORCED TO REBUY A PLAYER.
You're wrong.

So they want a more expensive, unreliable, featureless machine instead? I don't really see where you're coming from I guess.

I hope Gasteropod isn't including a Combo player when he says they're all rubbish compared to a PS3. A Combo Player is entirely a different beast. To be fair to BD Players the first DVD Players weren't exactly problem free. It's common for early kit, BD is still a very new product by life cycle standards.

Sony were never going to not get the PS3 hardware right, it would've been financial nightmare. Standalone BD Players however have a considerably smaller market.

Fair dos to Toshiba though for getting their HD-DVD right.
gasteropod wrote:I'd call them fools for buying said machines instead of a PS3.
You are paying a lot for things you may never need in a PS3. It's also completely the wrong shape for me, it doesn't sound like a lot but in reality it is.
gasteropod wrote:So they want a more expensive, unreliable, featureless machine instead?
After only a few months it was pretty easy to find a BD Player in the £400-500 bracket. I'll give you the reliability one but what do you mean featureless? The PS3 has only "just" got Profile 1.1, still cannot handle DTS-HD and doesn't even have Analogue outputs. Which is common on higher end BD Players.

Features wise what can the PS3 do playing BDs standalone players cannot?

As to non-BD features they mean nothing to me I don't want them and would never use any of them. The Media Center part sounds cool but I don't need it. My PC is 3-4m away from my TV.

Nope, it's been confirmed that early players (not the PS3) will not be profile compliant, and thus many bonuses will not be accessible to early BR adopters. BDA plans on special stickers on the back of the discs, to warn people about which bonuses are profile or not.

Representatives at the Blu-ray booth at CES told BetaNews that the PlayStation 3 is currently the only player they would recommend, due to upcoming changes to the platform. But Pioneer, Samsung, Panasonic and Sony have all been selling standalone Blu-ray players to customers.

In order to allay confusion, the BDA has adopted special labels that will be placed on Blu-ray movies. Those with a "Bonus View" sticker will require Profile 1.1 players, while those with "BD Live" will require Profile 2.0.

In addition, the BD-J interactivity layer, based on Java, has continued to evolve since the introduction of Blu-ray Profile 1.0. This means that early players may have a buggy implementation and perhaps more importantly, they are not powerful enough to play the latest films properly.

When BetaNews asked developers of BD Live whether they were concerned about a backlash from early adopters who supported the format from the beginning, we were told: "They knew what they were getting into."
I smile at the idea of one of those fanboys who goes "rhaaa rhaaaa rhaaa we won ! STICK A FORK IN HD-DVD ! yer player's a worthless brick ! Nuke the communists !" on the various forums, realising he has to buy a new Blu player AGAIN. Now, that's poetic justice (pity the guys who have more consideration for the others, and are on the same page thought)

Maybe Lourdes meant your comment that there is no more competition, when last time I checked HD-DVD is still very much here.

Thanks for the update. I'd forgotten about BD Profile 2.0 which means not even fucking Profile 1.1 is enough  . What does BD Live get you? I know 1.1 means PIP.

To put it in context the movie will continue to pay. Not everyone cares about extras (which PIP and Live effectively are).

I hope they re-release Bourne Identity with a new transfert, it needs it, this one is 6 years old, a lifetime in High Def progress terms.

On the one hand holly shit I wasn't expecting that but on the other I'm tempted to add it with Paramount are dropping HD-DVD.

Considering HBO is also owned by Timer Warner this is of no surprise but here we are:

Also:

p.s - What's this about a get out clause?

Until I see Universal and Paramount starting to re-release any of their HD-DVD exclusives it won't be over IMO.

Add to that the recent news of Terminator 2 German HD-DVD SE in March and Combo is still best for me.

It's from Bill Hunt who comes in his pants at the mere mention of blu-ray. if there was anything positive to say about HD-DVD he wouldn't post it. has he mentioned that blu-ray are furious that Toshiba have paid millions of dollars for a 30 second ad during the superbowl and when they tried to book one all slots had gone :)

Really? :D

I didn't realise that but did take it as very much rumours. The bit about Toshiba having to support a BD Recorder is clearly bollocks.

I just got the new french HD DVD of Bourne identity, get ready for this IT IS A NEW REMASTER the movie is the UNCUT VERSION (unlike in the US where it misses a 30s scene), only problem, but I know the european master was that way, it misses the intertitles (Bazel Bank - Switzerland etc...) they are shown only when you switch the subs on.

As for Bill Hunt saying HD-DVD encodes aren't up to BR standarts and Paramount / Universal having to redo them all if they switch to BR... the guy's a nut job. Many BR discs don't have more than 24gb or 18gb of film encoded on them, and he never complains.
