Master of the Flying Guillotine - 3/5

A bit cheesy. but good fun. I enjoyed the film, some of the villains and the finale are bonkers :D
The Mandarin print was in poor shape though.

I think thats a rather harsh way to judge the film (FG) Mark

I don't care about Oscars. Only because other films deserved the award, doesn't make the film bad, does it? What kind of reason is that?
Why would anyone want to watch Tom Hanks play a retard for 2.5 hrs is beyond me.
Why would anyone want to watch any actor play a "normal" person for 2.5 hours?

I agree with LD, that's harsh Mark, I found Hanks touching in the film.

I thought Forrest Gump was bad... err pants. :). The movie just didn't do anything for me, I hated Jenny so much. Tom Hanks was a good actor, and felt for him at the end, when he was crying, yet the whole movie I think was a bit of a let down :(

0.5 / 5 for me :)

Exiled - 3,5/5
Interesting and a quite surprising movie. Maybe not as good The Mission, but these movies can't really be compared. When you see the movie you'll understand why. Much respect to To for not making a conventional "sequel". The film is original, although some of the new elements don't work as well as they should. Action scenes are shot much like in the original, except that they're a few steps more balletic this time. Maybe a little too balletic, as there's a few unnecessary "tricks". Nevertheless, there's no denying Exiled is a very stylish bloodbath. The soundtrack is rather weak, and lessens the films impact at times.

Casino Royale - 5/10
Daniel Craig has real potential as Bond, unfortunately the film itself was not good. I even found the action sequences to be nothing but tiresome. At least in Die Another Day there were some good moments.

Borat - 6/10
Borat was played out 8 years ago but I was still sort of amused by the scenes from Kazakhstan and his journey. The actual encounters with people were all cut short or too long and I didn't find them particually funny.

Get Carter (1971) - 6/10
Wasn't that impressed, it was entirely too one-dimensional for me. It moved too quickly and we never got any sort of backstory or information on anyone.

Dead Leaves - 8/10
Production IG's version of Mind Game, or perhaps mind game was 4C's version of Dead Leaves, I don't know. The two bear the most remarkable similarities though Dead Leaves is a far cruder. 40~ mins of fun.

Midori - 6/10
It's probably because I'm so desensitised but I didn't find this as 'fucked up' as some call it. Girl gets taken by carnies, puppies get stamped on and eaten and a dwarf fits in a bottle. It's Japanese.

You're rating Die Another Day above Casino Royale??? :|

I liked Forrest Gump as well. By no means my favourite movie ever, but it was a nice, interesting, good story, with memorable characters, a nice pace, and just brilliant acting. It makes you laugh, it could make you cry, it's original, etc etc.

It's a good movie. I think some people might not feel much for the movie cause the character hanks plays has been parodied and ridiculed to death, and yeah I guess after a while the character would get on one's nerves. I didnt mind it much though. I thought Hanks was great, and Forrest was cool...

I didnt like Jenny either though. She's fucked up. But hey, even that had it's reason.

Hmm, I'm not sure actually. DAD was a conventional Bond film but they took the inuendo and effects too far. Casino Royale was just pretty meh. I don't really rate either of them as decent films.

Curse of the Golden Flower (2006 / China): 3,5/5

*The picture of Gong Li and Chow Yun-Fat has been removed / Crazy perverts !*

Errm... not sure what to say...
That wasn't what I was expecting... not by a long shot.

Golden Flower looks like a typical Yimou-esque "plastic film" (pretty pictures, pretty actors, but no soul), just like House of Flying Daggers, but it isn't.

Maybe it's the actors. HOFD had:
-Zhang "can't act to save my life" Ziyi
-Takeshi "one expression" Kaneshiro
-Andy "I'm just trying to say my lines in mandarin without mistakes" Lau.

In here we've got Chow Yun-Fat, Gong Li and a very surprising Jay Chou.
I had loved his performance in Initial D (stop laughing ! :D I'm serious), but I didn't expect him to look good next to proper actors.

I'm a bit disappointed by the editing. Never seen so many continuity errors and editing mistakes in one single movie. :o
The music is out of place most of the time, too (like Kawai's score in Seven Swords).

But still, this is a nice period piece with an intricate plot and a good (if a bit short) final battle.
Think of it as a more colourful version of Chen Kaige's The Emperor and the Assassin.

If you want wire-work and quick-paced one-on-one fights, stay away.

Not sure whether I will buy the DVD. I'll wait for a DVD-Rip and then make up my mind.

All I can say about Jay Chou in Initial D is:

Is his character supposed to be retarded in the movie?

King Kong (2006) 4/5

Still as good as when I watched it at the cinema.

Underworld Evolution 2/5

All a bit "meh" as they say. Nice SFX though. I liked the first better.

Shaolin Soccer 4/5

Never get bored with this.

When is the Golden Flower HK DVD out? I presume there is only 1 cut thus far?

It will be great :D . Seriously I can't wait Zhang Yimou has never made a bad film. I've loved everyone I've seen. HOFD is excellent IMO, and wow check out Gong Li's boobies! 8)

p.s - Oh and IMO Zhang Ziyi is a decent actress, who gets so much bad/unfair rap.

Check out Gong Li's jubblies trying to make a cameo appearence. :D

And Forrest wasn't cool... he's a moron. And that America took him to their heart as some kind of folk hero is truly disturbing. They elected his psychological twin to the White House. Twice.

I agree with Brad: Zhang Ziyi is a wonderfull actress, and I really liked HOFD as well. Yeah Andy was abit crap, but he usually is... so that didnt really surprise me and also somehow didnt bother me...

I'd love to see Curse... if only for Gong Li (or her happy boobies)

Sure Zhang Ziyi often plays a similar role but people act like that's a rare thing. I've always been impressed with her acting.

She's still young and to compare her to the older acting talent she often finds herself against is unfair IMO.

More cameo's please.

Zhang Ziyi is horrible, just look at Gong Li for a comparison. Both started off in Yimou films, both even looked alike at the same ages but Gong Li is just oh so much better. Zhang Ziyi just puts on her 'dogshit under the nose' expression and whines here way through films.

I'm sure I'll see Curse but I'm in no real hurry. Riding Alone was good but his films are just so glossed over.

Agreed, Zhang Ziyi is a terrible actress. I've seen pot plants with more talent than her.

But Zhang Ziyi is still young and Gong Li is much older so of course she has more experience :D
OK Gump was slow witted and semi literate, but he wasn't an idiot (if that makes sense).

The reason I like Zhang Ziyi is because she's very feisty, and has lots o energy, and emotion in her eyes. She does so much with just her eyes. I'm sure she's been in a couple of bad movies, or had some annoying parts, but I do like her as an actress.

What would really happen:

EXT. A Park Bench - Afternoon

Forrest: "Life is Like a box of choc-o-lates....."

Dodgy, ned types beat the crap out of Forrest and steal his cash.

THE END.
