Toy Story 3 4/5
Probably the final film in this classic series is a brilliant effort, head & shoulders above the competition but not for me on the same level as the first two.A little mean-spirited at times with some genuinely unlikeable toys the bear and the creepy baby! but clearly one of the year's top five films. The BD predictably looks ace.

Dead Silence: Weak, but didn't see that twist coming.
Unstoppable: Average, not as good as it's being made out to be.

I think we should have a Hungfist special spoiler tag because I like to know if a film has, what you've put in spoilers
.
Did anyone here see Social Network? How did it work as a Fincher film? I intended to but never got around to it. I'm going to see The American at the weekend. I hear it's really good.
Top Gun is cheesy fun but not really a keeper. Beverly Hills Cop 2 I love and True Romance is excellent. So basically 2 films of the lot I've seen (which is most), I rate.

With the odd exception, that's Tony Scott's career in a nut shell. He's the intelligent man's Michael Bay, which is saying very little.gasteropod wrote:Unstoppable: Average, not as good as it's being made out to be.

Hung's outburst is indeed exactly why I used a spoiler tag just thenbradavon wrote:I think we should have a Hungfist special spoiler tag because I like to know if a film has, what you've put in spoilers
Yeah I went to see The Social Network and it is superb, I highly recommend it.

Last Boy Scout is a Grade A action classic.Crimson Tide & Enemy Of The State are decent watches & i hear Revenge is very good though i've not seen it.bradavon wrote:

Crimson Tide & Enemy Of The State are pretty good. Certainly not keepers though. Watch once and sell on fodder.
How do I read Hungfist spoilers and avoid actual spoilers? Because what you've put in spoiler tags is no way a spoiler to most people. No actual details are given. In this case I took the risk, as it's not a film I'm planning to see anyway.gasteropod wrote:Hung's outburst is indeed exactly why I used a spoiler tag just then
How does it rank for a Fincher film? Something oddly reviewers didn't seem to be comparing it to. Concentrating more on the performances and writer.gasteropod wrote:Yeah I went to see The Social Network and it is superb, I highly recommend it.

Revenge is frustratingly almost a really good film.
You'll know what I mean when you see it.

John Carpenter's Vampires 3/5
There's not much love for this, one of Carpenter's later efforts but i like it,daft as it is.James Woods is ace as the vampire hunter who gets off on smacking around priests, plenty of cheesey, gory action.B Movie action star Thomas Ian Griffiths is the master vampire. The french blu-ray looks and sounds great.

The last decent Argento film was Trauma - 17 years ago - and even then many fans don't like it.

I agree. Gave it a 9.5/10gasteropod wrote:One of his best!
However it's a straight drama so less repeat value for me. Not sure if I'd pick it up on Blu-Ray unless it drops lowwww

The Wiz: 3/5
Not up to the standard of the 1939 classic but I still enjoyed it, definitely seems a darker film.

Yeah I have to disagree with you here, I thought Trauma was terrible. I'd say he stopped making great films once his dad died (so the last one was Opera), but has made a couple of decent ones since, being The Stendhal Syndrome and The Card Player.Markgway wrote:The last decent Argento film was Trauma - 17 years ago - and even then many fans don't like it.

Last saw it about 15 yrs ago but I recall thinking it was a decent enough horror/thriller. All I really remember though is severed heads and Asia's tits.gasteropod wrote:Yeah I have to disagree with you here, I thought Trauma was terrible.
I strongly disliked Opera. Left a nasty taste in the mouth.I'd say he stopped making great films once his dad died (so the last one was Opera)
Stendhal I just didn't 'get'. That really seems to be a 'love it' or 'hate it' film. The Card Player actually was pretty good (if subdued) so you've got a point.but has made a couple of decent ones since, being The Stendhal Syndrome and The Card Player.

Stendhal is good. It's no Suspiria of course, but it works on a different level. It's just a mean and effective thriller.
Jenifer was also good, if it counts. Genuine ero-guro.
But forget about Argentino, watch Mutant Girls Squad instead

(I know, totally random, but I just ran into this trailer, and...

Rare Exports (Finland, 2010) - 3.5/5
This Christmas Santa's gonna eat your children!
Finnish cinema goes to world map in one bang with Jalmari Helander's entertaining and refreshingly original Christmas fantasy and horror comedy. This is the original Santa, the one whose dining habits included eating children, and who was buried in the Korvatunturi mountain to protect people from it. Rare Exports is return to the Gremlins era of filmmaking when even mainstream fantasy movies could have darker shades. Rare Exports is not graphic - it's rated '13' in Finland, a bit higher in most other countries - but it's not afraid to mix scares into a feel-good adventure story set in the mountainous Lapland. The film's language is hilariously coarse - at least if you can understand the original dialogue or viewed a properly subtitled print. The UK distributor reportedly subtitle censored it, omitting a ton of one liners in the process.

The American: 3/5
It's a bit of a slow burner, but I enjoyed it. Much more of a drama than what I expected for a thriller, the film makes good use of locations in the Italian countryside, little dialogue and a piano/violin score. It often looks like a 90's European car commercial. George Clooney plays an assassin who hides out in Italy, where he takes on an assignment to construct a weapon for a mysterious contact and also falls for a prostitute, she's beautiful
