I said people's opinions do not influence me in watching a film either way.bradavon wrote:I can show you were you've said many times "you don't listen to other people's opinions".
I listen and read others opinions all the time which is pretty obvious to everyone. I have said many times, but your so blind you get it wrong every time.
but They do influence you as you are a sheep and you have been put off seeing a film many times becuase of word of mouth and reviews, everyone can tell that Baaaaahdavon.

Others on this forum from the Mainland say the same thing.
I guess you guys are so used to see English subs with Chinese films. I still find it weird because no matter how good your English is as a second language surely it's not as good as your first language. Not that they use rarer words too often.

Yi doesn't like to watch movies with dutch subs.
I've always found that weird.
I'll take french subs over english ones any day.
Except with japanese films. English works better when translating from japanese.

That was before I started learning cantonese and japanese.
Now I understand what I'm missing when reading english subs.
French subs tend to be more detailed and precise.
English subs are often dumbed-down.
As far as I'm concerned, it's not a question of difficulty (my english is fine).
It's all about the quality of the translation.

How good are you? You're learning both at the same time? Is that wise?tom2681 wrote:That was before I started learning cantonese and japanese.
On American and British DVDs?tom2681 wrote:English subs are often dumbed-down.
American English dumbs down the language greatly anyway so I can understand that one. It's all about using the least amount of words and letters as possible in American English. It always annoys me when American says "write me". How exactly do you write someone? It's not even possible. It's "write to me".
And "don't take it so personal", it's "don't take it so personally". You'd be told off if you used English like that at school but in American English it's correct. Does Quebec French dumb down French at all?
I know it is but I'm sure your French is better. Every language has very rare words in it that are barely ever used but greatly improve your ability to articulate if you know them.tom2681 wrote:As far as I'm concerned, it's not a question of difficulty (my english is fine).

My japanese is good, my cantonese not so good. How good are you?
When you already know 4 or 5 languages, you can learn several at the same time.
Both. US subs are always dumbed-down.On American and British DVDs?
UK subs tend to be longer and more detailed (HKL's being a good example) but it doesn't mean that the translation is any better.
Quite the contrary. From what I've heard, they speak some kind of "medieval french", using many complex sentence structures that we've abandoned years ago. We've dumbed-down our french, but they haven't.Does Quebec French dumb down French at all?
Yeah, but since those rare words are never included in subtitles, that's not exactly a problem.Every language has very rare words in it that are barely ever used but greatly improve your ability to articulate if you know them.
P.S: Sorry for going off-topic. I'll stop now.

I guess Quebec being much smaller than America meant the language had more chance to not get diluted, as happened greatly in America, so many nationalities all "just about" historically speaking English.
Maybe.tom2681 wrote:Yeah, but since those rare words are never included in subtitles, that's not exactly a problem.
