It's a damn shame that he couldn't keep his head. Win or lose, that's a bad way to go out...

Still, it doesn't stop him from being one of the best players ever, but it's just a little bittersweet.

Wow and I thought Rooney was a twat. Zidane makes Rooney look like a saint. Tough shit France. Glad Italy won, although their celebrations were kinda homosexual. Must be all those years of supressed disappointment exploding into sheer ecstacy.

Pfff... what a lousy player that Zidane is: incredible bad aim... a talented player would have headbutted materazzi between the eyes, but ZZ totally missed and only hit him in the chest: what an amateur :D

Although a professional player shouldn't react in such a way, I am still curious about what Materazzi has said to Zidane. In this world cup he was very calm. When he was fouled he wouldn't push anybody, shout around or whatever. He'd just stand up and continue playing. I'm sure that all the stuff he took gathered and all exploded into this headbutt into Materazzi's solar plexus during the final 10 minutes. Before that Materazzi grabbed him from behind during that corner kick. Then he must have said something that either insulted his wife, daughter or Islam, man.

If it was that bad I'd have waited until after the match. It's good to see him elected as best player of the whole championship.

Materazzi must have said something REALLY bad, but that doesn't excuse his behaviour. If ZZ was annoyed he should of waited till after the game, IMO.

Well deserved headbutt, if you know Materazzi.
But I still think an icon like Zidane shouldn't react like this.
I used to be "the man who loves the movies you hate".
Now I'm just "that weird french guy with a cat avatar who comes to BnB once a year for no reason and then disappears again".

Rumours are that it was something said about Zidane's racial background. Doesn't justify the headbutt but if true it's sad to see players being verbally abused.

It's a joke that he was elected, as ZZ only had 1 good game against brazil and in the other games he was OK at most. he got the award based purely on his reputation, instead of his actual performance this world cup.

Ah well, this whole WC has been a big joke...

They even elected Portugal as the team that played the most entertaining ...(!)

Well, their match against the Netherlands was very entertaining, wasn´t it. :D
No, seriously... I know what you mean.

I didn´t think Zidane would get the trophy after the headbutt against Materazzi, yesterday. And... you´re right, he wasn´t that good at all. But still, I think it´s okay - it´s like a "Thank you", for the good moments he gave us in his career.

Concerning the performamces in this worldcup I would have given the award to either Andrea Pirlo or Fabio Cannavaro...

The Korean/Japan world cup was more enjoyable I thought.

The third place match in this WC (Portugal/Germany) was better than the final IMO.

the reason zidane got the award was because the journalists voted at half time last night-clearly if they'd have waited there'd have been a different result :?

I heard Matterazzi said (in Italian?):

"I hope Jean suffered".

Jean was Zidane's first coach or something I think and to him he was like a 2nd father, he had died of cancer the previous year I think :(

If Matterazzi said that then thats way out of order, but Zidane shouldnt have reacted like that. The best thing for him to do would have to score the winning goal, win the WC and dedicate the award to his former coach.

That's worse than the racist remark because it's personal and cruel.

It might be wrong, whatever he said is pretty bad, expecially f it was the remark about his friend/coach, but you can't excuse what ZZ did.

BBC News (I think, may have been News 24) told a story about a Hi-Fi store, which now has to pay back over 10.000 custormers who bought a Flatpanel TV. The deal was if the customers could guess the winner and Italy won, the customers would get their Flatpanel TV for free. Ouch!

Speaking of BBC News, here's an update on the Zidane story. If the lip reader is accurate, then it doesn't excuse Zinedine, but I'd've probably nutted Materazzi too.

Still not sure I agree with him. What Materazzi said was wrong, but ZZ is supposed to be a professional and not let taunts get to him. :?

You're right, it was worth watching 'till the end. Or rather, listening 'til the end

Although, the titles were a little misleading: 'World Class Defenders' is a bit much :D

Very good video as well. The final scene is an example of a reason of why more Dutch people have learnt to speak German than Germans have learnt Dutch. :D
