Drunken Monkey - 2.5/5

An admirable attempt to make a modern day Shaw Bros. film that doesn't quite succeed

Thought it was OK but not up to the standard of other Shaws films I've seen (OK thats not many). The fights suffered from an annoying use of slow-motion or something, and also some undercranking.

It was hard to see what was going on.

Good to see the old master Lau Kar Leung on screen though

Hero Director's Cut 3/5

This was the first time I'd been able to watch any film in weeks. I don't think it added a lot to the regular release TBH, and not as good as House of Flying Daggers. It plods along too much, taking ages to get to the point.

I prefer Hero to House of Flying Daggers, the ending to that was really rushed (Yes I know the lovely actress Anita Mui died), but really felt they should add more, as alot of question was left hanging. Hero was miles better

At least with Hero you know what happened

great great movie. the ending is a little weird, but jack nicholson is awesome in this. ireally enjoyed it, one of the better horror flicks of the time. much much better than halloween lol which i was told was awesome...but it wasnt...

the wife creeped me out her eyes were just scary...and the kid was seriously fucked up with "tony", someone has Mulitple personality disorder

but great film, dunno why i havent watched it before

Girls Without Tomorrow (aka Call Girl '88) 3.5/5

Seems like an ordinary hosatess movie but it's directed with a bit more flair for characters and for distressing emotions by David Lam (Women Prison). Petrina Fung, Maggie, Elsie Chan and Stanley Fung do fine work.

Thought it was pretty average IMO, I haven't seen many Shaws MA flicks, I bet you'd say its pants 8)
Actually I have to agree with your review Ken, it didn't feel like a 2003 film to me. Maybe its 3/5, thought the final fight was good

hey,

did buy the dvd upon release and as you say, it's a mixed bag but some welcome parts. You should keep an eye out for Sifu Lau's ultimate project that is in the works. A final masterpiece if you will and I'm sure he can deliver.

My favourite Mainland Chinese film and the one that truly embodies the expression "criminally simplistic", when discussing this particular style of Chinese cinema. Hou Jianqi's masterpiece of low-key, extremely clearly told subtleties only seems to get better over the years.

Hostel Unrated 4/5

I'm pretty surprised that no one has given this a positive review. Even Cabin Fever fans have slated this. I thought it was damn entertaining. Funny, kind of sick (but not really) and interesting message about exploitation.

It's worth watching for the uber cool Takashi Miike cameo. Pretty smart.

PS: Also, the film wasn't as graphic as I expected.

The Many Adventures of Winnie The Pooh (1977) - 4/5

I was read the books when I was little but the film is fine too. Amusingly told, beautifully drawn and with great voice casting, especially Sterling Hollaway and Paul Winchell. Charming, friendly movie

The songs aren't the Sherman Bros. best work, but I do like the "Heffalumps and Woozles" one.
The remastered print (the menu says ("25 Anniversary Edition") so I think it uses the same print as the R1, is good though it flickered a few times, and some voices seem different to the original featurettes.

Still a comedy classic. Had me in stitches for most of the running time. The Fortune Star disc is amazing for AV. The songs in particular sounded great.

Nothing new in Peter Ngor's portrayal of street life but his performers have a workable enery and it's certainly a tough, graphic watch at times.
