Hey Yi, the sequel to The Hustler - The Color of Money is worth checking out, Newman's performance is outstanding.

I haven't seen The Hustler yet, but have had the old SE for a while now.

I thought you would've enjoyed Silent Hill Brooce...

IMO, it's probably the best film this year.

hey,

Devil's Box 1.5/5

Simon Yam moves a box he shouldn't have and how he's being pursued by vengeful ghosts. One-time director Tommy Chin has a sincere agenda concerning atmosphere over gore but can only pull that off at a few select points.

Hey Eva, I've seen the Color of Money (it's green btw), and thought it was a decent movie but nothing outstanding. Yeah Newman is good in it, but Cruise is only OK and his smugness is him just doing an impersonation of Newman's character in The Hustler, except less likeable...
Not that Newman is all that likeable in the Hustler, but he pulls it off and makes you interested, whereas Cruise is just annoying.

hey,

Zozo 4/5

After his two comedies Jalla Jalla (shot on DV) and the zany Kopps, Josef Fares goes 2.35 and autobiographical on us as he partly tells his own experiences in fleeing the war torn Lebanon. It may not feel affecting but it has a subtle nature that allows for an after effect that is quite pleasing. Stunning cinematography, a rarity in Swedish cinema.

Pirates of the Carribean 2 - 3/5

I did enjoy this - exciting and thrilling in places and the action - including a giant kraken sea monster, and a sword fight while rolling on a wheel - is great. :) As before with the first film, Johnny Depp is hilarious in it, with some great delivery and humour - and seems to hold the film together when he is the focus, unlike Bloom or Knightley - the problem is that the story meanders - Gore Vebinski admitted that he made this film with an unfinished script - and Depp is in the film not nearly enough IMO. Its like I was waiting for the next action scene to occur all the time.
At 2.5 hours, its a bit too long and I found myself getting restless towards the end - and also the film ends on a cliffhanger, with Jack seemingly dead - which means it doesnt work as a standalone film - all it does is leave the audience feeling cheated, like they've only seen half a film.
This is a shame as the first film worked perfectly by itself. :( But it does make you want to see Pirates 3 I guess, which was the plan all along.

hey,

Devil's Vindata 3/5

That's the on-screen title but obviously it was meant to be Devil's Vendetta. Barely plot-driven ghost-comedy but comes with almost extremely frequent, fun special effects and off the wall sights such as Billy Lau turning into soap just to get a glimpse of female flesh. Uneven but creative in a typical Hong Kong cinema thrashy way.

Mulan

Besides The Lion King, still my favourite Disney picture.
The German voice over for "Mushu", Otto Waalkes, is just great!

Not the Nine o' Clock News - Volume 2 - 4/5

Very funny, occasionally un-PC humour from the 80's :D Love Rowan Atkinson. He's great :)

POTC2 was great but I'm looking forward to watching 2 and 3 back to back (and part 2 with subtitles for the voodoo woman scene).

LOL I admit I found it tricky at times to understand her but I got the gist ;)
I can't wait for the 3rd one. The 2nd ending was awful but I guess it makes you want to see the 3rd one.

Big Bullet 3.5/5

Still an awesome Lau Ching Wan vehicle, let down by an ending which ran out of steam long before we got there.

hey,

indeed, Bruce. Basically when the film turns more lighthearted, it all derails. I really do like some of Teresa Lee's work but not in this film. Pure annoyance.

hey,

Bloody Sorcery 1.5/5

Ultra cheap black magic horror movie but those black magic curse sights are distinctively gruesome when they do appear. Can't save this one however.

hey,

American Grandson 3/5

Ann Hui doesn't have that much to say about being a real Chinese, an Americanized Chinese and an older Chinese but thoughts are sincere. Not that filled with substance however. Wu Ma is very fitting for the lead and has decent chemistry with Wong Kwan-Yuen (All About Ah Long)

hey,

The Black Magic With Buddha 3.5/5

From Lo Lieh, this black magic experience seems to be satisfied with a sole gimmick (a brain devil wreaking havoc) and a single sound cue. But as soon as Lo Lieh starts to appear himself, it's full throttle ahead when dealing with how the brain devil will manifest itself in human form. Lo also throws in some welcome, quirky humour. A rare (and it will continue to be rare I reckon) genre treat, not quite up to the level of the likes of Devil Fetus.
