I just got a bargain from Amazon.com - The Bourne Trilogy on HD DVD for £27 delivered.

This is a pre-order. I think I'm right in saying these are the best HD DVD versions to get, yeah?

AFAIK the first two it doesn't matter but Ultimatum USA is a Combo so has both versions and it also has an extra Lossless True-HD track not found elsewhere.

Aren't you worried about customs? £27 is a good price.

It's a shame their is no box set in America. I believe Amazon's price is just the 3 in 1 price. I was all set to get the UK box set until I heard Universal UK dropped True-HD in place of lots of dubbed DD Plus soundtracks. Now I'll get them separately.

I thought it was Ultimatum that I needed to buy the US version for but I couldn't remember what the reason was. You've just reminded me - the TrueHD soundtrack.

Customs? I hadn't thought of that actually but its my Christmas present from my mum, so if I have to pay the customs its not such a bad deal.

Besides, if I bought the films separately from Play, they're £18 each! Thats £54! I highly doubt customs charges would cost me £27, meaning even if I do get stung, it'll still be cheaper than buying them all separately.

Plus the US Ultimatum is a combo which means my parents can watch the film on their SD DVD player. I wouldn't normally go for a combo disc (hate the idea) but the only way to get the TrueHD soundtrack is with the combo disc right?

Yep. Not that I'd guess your parents will care.

If it was a present I'd probably go for the UK box set (unless it's much more?) but yes this is the way to go.

I like Combos, what I really dislike is the artificially inflated price :shock:

No no, you misunderstand; sorry if I wasn't being clear. The HD DVDs are a present from my parents to me but I ordered them to get the version I want.

My parents don't even know what a TrueHD track is! They don't even have an HD TV or HD player - just a standard Panasonic widescreen CRT & DVD recorder.

I personally am building a HTPC which will play both Blu Ray & HD DVD as well as record 2 channels of Freeview at the same time.

. I did think it weird you'd care about True-HD if it was a present for your parents. I also thought it weird your parents even have a HD-DVD Player.

I usually get my Dad R2 DVDs. His Player is MR but his girlfriends isn't and he almost always watches movies over there. His girlfriend is one of the few stubborn people left still holding on to Analogue only TV (while it lasts).

Nice! Can you get Twin Tuner PCI-E cards or will it be two cards?

I'll have a similar setup but using Home Cinema separates. HTPC's are too complicated for Home Cinema usage IMO.

No, it'll be one card. I'm getting the Hauppauge Nova-T 500 from eBuyer:

It has dual DVB-T tuners built in for Freeview use. Its a PCI card though, not PCI-Express.

HTPCs are only percieved as too complicated because most people don't know what they're doing with them. I am keeping mine simple - Shuttle XPC case, Athlon 64 X2 5600, 2GB Corsair DDR2, LG combi BD / HD DVD drive, TV tuner card & 500GB hard drive.

I won't be using it for playing games (just built a powerful gaming rig a few months ago) so once it is set up with Windows Vista Home Premium x64 & all the drivers are set up, it'll be left as is.

Too many people try to use HTPCs as all-in-ones for films, downloading, games, Internet browsing, etc. This is where problems occur. If the machine is kept simple by user design & usage, it will work flawlessly.

TBH for techies like us they're simple but I more meant compared with a Home Setup where it's on and you're watching a channel in 2-3 seconds and that kind of thing, they're just more complicated.

I don't mean they're complicated overall just in comparison. The idea of having to mess around with a Firewall/AntiVirus just to watch a DVD would be too much. The little things like that put me off.

Plus I have WMC on my Vista PC and boy it's clunky and inefficient. Maybe I'm just unlucky. Personally even at it's simplest I don't believe Windows is (and maybe never can be) as simple as a Home setup. There are so many more variables to think about, you don't even need to consider on a Home setup.

It's all the little things you need to think about on a PC that puts me right off. Granted it's impossible to get Twin Tuner, DVD Recorder and HD Player all in the same box outside of a HTPC but I'm happy enough to own 3 boxes.

IronMonkey, I recommend getting a Radeon HD2600 or HD2900Pro for your HTPC rig. They're budget card with the AVIVO technology, 100% GPU acceleration of HD codecs like AVC. It'll definitely help considering the shithouse CPU that you're sticking in the box.

I was trying to avoid getting a GPU as well as that just means more heat & more fan noise. I'm trying to make an almost silent system. I suppose hardware HD codec acceleration would be a good thing to have, but I think I'll see how I get on with the built-in nVidia graphics chip on the Shuttle XPC before I splash out on a card I might not need.

Oh & real-world - there is absolutely nothing wrong with the Athlon 64 X2; I'm using it in my gaming PC right now & it performs flawlessly. I'm not interested in overclocking (especially in the HTPC) so it does what I need. It also has played every video file I've sent its way absolutely flawlessly, including 1080p x64 & QuickTime files.

I don't care that Intel chips are "better with lower clock speeds". They still cost way too much compared to Athlons in my opinion. I'm trying to keep to a budget for this system & AMD is my preferred platform.

Of course I have, but of the 2 models you mentioned, both had fans. Besides, heatpipes are still going to add extra heat to an extremely compact unit that I'm trying to keep as cool as possible...
