Re: Machete
Yeah Planet Terror grows on me the more I watch it
really it does look exactly the same style, tone and gore levels of PT, which is a good thing. Hell they even use plenty of the cast as well

Re: Machete
Fuck you people.
Yeah, it looked like CG but otherwise the trailer is so funny that I forgive it for now and judge final product when its out.
And I'm shocked to hear veteran b-film viewers like Marshall to complain about the lack of humor. IMHO, the fucking disease that plagues modern exploitation tributes is the damn post modern humor. The good old exploitation flms are so cool because they are not intentionally funny... well, they are a little bit often, yes, but they find the thin bloody line between ridiculous and badass... some of my friends don't get it. It's black and white to them, they either wanna laugh at it, or see it dead serious, when in reality it's right in the middle, a little bit of both, a grin.

I hate the overuse of CGI but oddly never CGI blood doesn't bother me at all. I don't pay much attention to whether it's squibs or CGI though.

I agree with most of this, and I watched the trailer again, but more attentively, to see I missed anything "good" and to try to determine why it didn't work for me.HungFist wrote: And I'm shocked to hear veteran b-film viewers like Marshall to complain about the lack of humor. First, most of the 70s exploitation movies I like ARE funny. Sometimes it is because a witty genius like Jack Hill or Norifumi Suzuki made it, other times it's an unintentional camp classic like SATAN'S CHILDREN. I am not "up" for stuff like THRILLER: A CRUEL PICTURE. Just not my cup of poop, and I certainly don't begrudge anyone's enjoyment of it or MACHETE. Both are better than 90% of the stuff out there.
I did not care for the look of the trailer. Part of it is all the CGI--a deal breaker for me. I'm one of those potty-pants who cannot stand it. Too bad for me! But also the editing was super-obnoxious. What was with all those black frames? Jump-cuts are one thing, but that strobing was seizure-inducing. But ultimately I guess I am more interested in the humor because it doesn't require horribly fake-looking, distracting computer animation. This trailer was all about the "violence," except I could not take it at all seriously because the physics were so wrong. What works in a Warner Brothers cartoon does not play well for me in a film of this nature.* I prefer the DEATH RACE 2000 model of social satire and plausible gore. I'd rather see an electrical wire up someone's pant-leg (to detonate a squib) or a boom mic in-frame than a knife cutting through someone like butter because there is no physical resistance (since it is animated in in post production, along with some cartoony bloodspray.
So, sorry about the pontificating. Just wanted to try to EXPLAIN why I am not into this or modern films generally. Not saying anyone else should feel this way.
*Although I can handle a film like Jackson's BRAIN DEAD. Practical effects make implausible effects easier for me to forgive.

Re: Machete
The trailer's obviously been made to put bums on seats post Crank/Rambo and not to appeal just to the classic B-movie fanboys so the editing was obviously going to displease that demographic, this is why I never put any stock in trailers. I'm surprised it's been described as humorless though as I thought the intestine sequence was anything but!

Re: Machete
I really hope this does well and we see more Rambo style gore fests. I've been so fed up with the lack lustre action films of the past few years. Predators is so much better than AVP because it doesn't shy away from the violence and has an 80s action feel to it.
We're in trouble when a bunch of 40-50 somethings (except for Statham) can likely make a better action film than the new guys.

Actually I though Predators was no better than AVP1, or Predator 2 for that matter. Can't speak for AVP2 though...yet
Marshall have you seen Planet Terror? Did you enjoy that?
I think this latest Machete trailer lies between the other 2 I've seen. One sells it as being amazing and the other makes it look crap. Could all be in the editing. Seriously
Amazing cult style trailer

Bog standard mainstream trailer

I think they look worlds apart
Just a thought

Re: Machete
Really? WOW! AVP1 played like a 12A but Predators is definitely it's 15 rating. It had a really ugly modern glossy CGI look to it too. Whereas most of the time you could see the jungle was real.luckystars wrote:Actually I though Predators was no better than AVP1
That trailer couldn't make it look any more different. It looks pretty rubbish in that one but then that's the PG-13 happy trailer.luckystars wrote:Bog standard mainstream trailer

I prefer the cult style trailer. OK it will probably still be a cheesy film but it makes you want to see it more.
Michelle Rodriguez looks amazing in it.

You didnt like it! crikey I thought it was amazing, up there with the best few films of the year by a mile for me. I expected trash, I got relentless action and some stunning scenes of carnage and direction.Markgway wrote:It's a bomb alright.romerojpg wrote:Universal Soldier Resurrection - now that's the bomb!

Nope. Thought it was mindless drivel with endless scenes of beefy non-entities smashing into each other. Have you seen the uncut trailer I posted? If you cannot play 720p videos, here it is on YouTube (try the 720p link first):grim_tales wrote:I prefer the cult style trailer. OK it will probably still be a cheesy film but it makes you want to see it more.

Surprisingly you don't need to confirm you're 18 to watch it.

They keep making sequels to a film that wasn't much good in the first place.

Thanks Brad. I hadnt seen the uncut trailer, only the made up cult one and the ordinary PG-13 type trailer.bradavon wrote:Have you seen the uncut trailer I posted? I'm expecting 15 too. Predators is pretty tough too, by today's standards. I reckon the BBFC will see it's not meant to be taken seriously.

Hey I am not sure you saw the same film as me as Predators was pretty tame by any standards.bradavon wrote:I'm expecting 15 too. Predators is pretty tough too, by today's standards.
Mind you Machete may get an 18 for 2 reasons, if they say the C word, and if it has rape/violent sex in it

I'm expecting any sexual violence, are you?
I guess Predators was pretty tame. My mistake but it did warrant a 15.

Re: Machete
Sexual violence I am expecting that for sure, it seems that sort of film. That could well bump it way into the 18 category, even if it is a bit if a piss take. Guess we will see soon when it comes out
