All three parts were screened in Helsinki last weekend, but unfortunately I couldn't be there. And now they're screening Nagisha Oshima films and I still can't be there. Damn.

Damn I wish I'd known about this, I was in Helsinki then - although I was still recovering from Flow. :)

Oh yes, thank you. But what I'd really like to see Criterion release is the remaining Nikkatsu Action films...

The cover's that are chosen for these films are always so fantastic! Kudo's to all the people who developed them.

Classy yes but enough to justify the cost? No. It's done deliberately to create a false sense of worth.

(yes, this was in the wrong thread for half a day, yes, me sleepy)

Eclipse Series 28: The Warped World of Koreyoshi Kurahara
- http://www.criterion.com/boxsets/825-ec ... i-kurahara
23 Aug 2011

Intimidation (1960)
Elegantly stripped-down and carefully paced, Intimidation (Aru kyouhaku) is a moody early film from one of the Japanese New Wave’s preeminent stylists.

The Warped Ones (1960)
The anarchic descent into amoral madness that is The Warped Ones (Kyonetsu no kisetsu) sounded a lost generation’s cry for help and kicked off Japan’s cinematic sixties with a bang.

I Hate But Love (1962)
Inspired by Preston Sturges’s Sullivan’s Travels, I Hate But Love (Nikui anchikusho) is a high-octane romantic comedy and road movie.

Black Sun (1964)
You’ve probably never seen anything quite like this manic, oddball, anti–buddy picture about a young, jazz-obsessed Japanese drifter and a black American GI on the lam in Tokyo.

Thirst for Love (1967)
Kurahara adapted a novel by Yukio Mishima for Thirst for Love (Ai no kawaki), a tense psychological drama about a young woman who is widowed after marrying into a wealthy family.

Masaki Kobayashi’s 9.5 hour war film is quite possibly the most epic movie ever made. Released as three films, the story follows the young and idealistic Kaji (Tatsuya Nakadai) who tries to bring some sense and humanity to a wartime labor camp he works at – until he’s drafted and sent to front line. While a little longer than it needs to be (certain points are unnecessarily repeated) the film is an extremely strong pacifist statement Nakadai is amazing in the lead role, the film’s scope is exceptional, and the beautiful cinematography even resembles Terrence Malick’s films in places. The film’s battle scenes, especially in the second film, are also among the best ever shot. Were they made today, they’ve be filled with CGI. The Human Condition, despite its small flaws, is one of the strongest movie experiences one can ever have!

Are those all films worth owning or do you buy them because they're Criterion? I've never seen a DVD brand inspire such loyalty.

For the films. It can be a bit silly I guess: I only got Criterion's IF.... because the bonus short films on the cheaper UK disc turned out to be NTSC-PAL. I did wait until someone sold the Criterion for a tenner. In some cases, there were glitches on some of the UK discs, so that's why I went for the Criterion.

To prove I'm not nuts, I'm not going to upgrade from the BFI GODZILLA to the new Criterion release, and that's one of my top 20 films.

HKL managed a great brand loyalty but Criterion's is much bigger. I don't own many because more and more what makes them better from a technical stand point (often not much) isn't worth the greatly increased price. Plenty of their blu-rays have perfectly solid UK blu-rays of their own.

I know that more often that not Criterion quality is the best, I'm just wondering if people buy films that aren't favourites and they aren't likely to rewatch purely because of that label. Would Ivan Dragon have bought all of those titles he listed had the distributor been Warner Home Video?

I have a few Criterions and they are uniformly excellent.i mean the likes of Blow Out & The Killing have another movie as an extra feature. Certainly in the case of Videodrome for example, the choice is the butchered, inferior quality Universal release or the the uncut vastly superior Criterion version.i know,if i decide to buy the movie where my cash is going.
