Nope I wasn't making fun at all! I honestly have gotten like that from alcohol on several occasions, and I've got scars on my arm from it from a fairly recent night out, not proud of it at all but there you go. Alcohol is after all, a depressant.
P.S. Nah I'm not an alcoholic haha, it can just affect me badly on some nights out whereas other times I'll enjoy myself.

I don't think we can compare someone suffering a mental illness (which depression and self-harm are) to someone getting pissed and the negative consequences of that. You say you're not an alcoholic? Yet it sounds very much like you are. Why else would anyone continue to drink knowing the harm it causes. If eating Mars Bars caused me to injure myself and act aggressively... guess what? I'd stop. Iron Monkey can't control his illness. If we're admitting to alcoholism then that's different. It maybe a self-inflicted illness but it's an illness nonetheless. But what you describe, Gasteropod, doesn't sound at all like the average behaviour of someone who drinks and has fun with it. I won't ask how you got those scars you speak of but clearly you have some sort of problem. And I hope in all seriousness you seek help.gasteropod wrote:Nope I wasn't making fun at all! An alcoholic needs to drink, I don't need to drink at all
I drink on nights out which are like once a week, if that. I know loads of people who drink alcohol just at home when they're watching TV, and I don't even do that!!!
And I'm quite confused how you don't understand how drinking on a night out can sometimes cause depression, it's a pretty common thing and that's why you see girls just randomly crying and stuff outside clubs. I drink because otherwise all the other drunk people will totally piss me off, and I won't be in the mood to dance and stuff without being loosened up by the alcohol.
The fact that it sometimes makes me want to kill myself isn't as bizarre as you make out, none of my friends think it's weird at all and they totally agree that alcohol's unpredictable.

And that answer is?Markgway wrote:Dude, if you even have to think about it... we have an answer right there. Straight guys don't ever doubt that they're straight. They just are.
Right, because sexuality is ever that simple. I guess gay people aren't as intelligent as straight people? Is that what you're equally saying?
No! Mark overreacting, never.Yi-Long wrote:I didnt regard it as Gasteropod as making fun or ridiculing Iron Monkey or his situation or anything. Seems like you're overreacting a bit, Mark.

I think it'll always be something that hangs over me though. If I feel I'm in a really stressful situation for a long time I don't seem to be able to cope very well with it at all, and these things happen at certain points of our lives.
My mates always ask how I afford my stuff, like PC, HTPC, server PC, plasma TV, dedicated BD player, surround receiver & speakers, about 400 DVDs & 30 odd BDs. They think I must be rolling in it, but I'm not, I just don't drink! Or smoke! Or do drugs!saltysam wrote:As for alcohol,i rarely drink now,may go out once or maybe twice a month and have 5 or 6 pints of lager and that's it.
Not that my mates do drugs. Some of them smoke & most of them drink - I don't see the point, you're just literally p**sing away your money!
That would be what you call a "hangover".saltysam wrote:it's the next day i feel a bit like shit!

Yeah I think the thing that mainly triggers the depression when I've been drinking is when I start feeling lonely because I broke up with my ex over a year ago and I'm still single. So on nights where my mates just pull girls effortlessly and I never do, sometimes it badly affects me. When sober, I don't suffer from depression by the way.

That's what I've always done (sometimes less). I don't like getting drunk every single week but once/twice a month is fun.saltysam wrote:As for alcohol,i rarely drink now,may go out once or maybe twice a month and have 5 or 6 pints of lager and that's it.
It staggers me how much people spends on fags (the type you stick in your mouth!). I've been in debt once in my life (when I came back from travelling), simply because I am naturally incredibly frugal. This helped immensely when I was unemployed.
The only thing I ever do to excess is buy DVDs/BDs and we're really only talking about £30-40 a month, so hardly a lot.
Sure getting drunk every week is OTT but the point is you feel more relaxed and are able to have a much funner time. I know when I've been sober and my mates drunk, it's always sucked as you just cannot take part in the fun in the same way.IronMonkey wrote:I don't see the point, you're just literally p**sing away your money!
Don't you ever drink? Personally I've found people who don't drink period always struggle to let their hair down fully and can be annoying when everyone else is drunk and they're just sitting their clearly not enjoying it fully.

People who have never experienced 'depression' will also pretty much never be able to REALLY understand it. I've stopped trying to explain it a long time ago.
They see you crack a joke or flash a smile, and they'll think you're fine.
In my last few days at school a teacher remarked how I so often had a friendly smile on my face. Well... we all wear our masks at times I guess.
I've never been a drinker, or a smoker, or a druggy, or whatever. I'm also not into casual 1-night sex or anything like that. I've never felt a need to do all that stuff. Maybe things will change and I might be into that in 10 years from now or something, but so far, that just isn't me.
I really don't get the appeal of getting drunk or high, and acting like a douche. (I don't need any of that stuff to act like a douche!
)
Anyway, Monkey... I guess the thing is, for me at least, that you try to not focus on the crap that's wrong with your life, but enjoy the little stuff that makes life fun. A good TV show, a nice videogame, some sportevents you're looking forward to, etc.
I've been pretty far down below before, and I've been close to stepping 'out' a few times... and I'm not REALLY sure why I didn't... but the dips come but they will also go again. It will probably never disappear, usually they'll always be right beneath the surface waiting to jump you when shit happens... but so far I just keep going on, never looking to far ahead, and never looking to hard at the past.... and I guess that's the same for most people dealing with this 'depression' shit.
On a related note regarding the 'tell us something about yourself we don't know' subject, my snot tastes like pringles.

Half joking?

Everything is simply much funnier plus people say things they would never have the guts to say sober. Which can be equally hilarious and dangerous but when it's done right, it can crazy.
We all have a barrier when sober that largely gets broken down drunk, that's a good thing in my book. Although tbh if you're dead against the whole concept you probably won't get it, so it's largely pointless trying to explain it. The fact we're having to explain means it's hopeless.
My best friend is T-Total and dislikes people drinking, she'll never get it so I don't bother to try and explain it any more. The fun times you can have drunk are well worth the awfulness the following day. I do find it annoying how people who are T-Total act all uppity about it. Don't take it all so seriously, it's just booze.
I'd be surprised if I ever get depression (as opposed to depressed), it's not in my make up. No matter what situation I've been in I've always picked myself up and don't self pity.
As I don't understand it I'll refrain from commenting further.
I cannot talk about getting high but I find I often have a funnier time when drunk, not acting like a dickhead as I think you mean but having a laugh. Where's the harm in that?Yi-Long wrote:I really don't get the appeal of getting drunk or high, and acting like a douche. (I don't need any of that stuff to act like a douche!)

I'm an idiot because I suffer from depression AND drink (though not that often and never to excess). Even in my psychological state I've never come out of a pub crying or wanting to harm myself (or anyone else for that matter). Seriously THAT isn't normal. I promise you. I'm not saying this for my benefit. I'm just a little concerned for you. Anyone who harms themselves for any reason has a serious problem they need to seek help for and writing it off as normal behaviour is a big mistake. Alcohol can be a depressent (but not that much); and for many (perhaps most) it has the oppostie affect. It could be that your using drink as mask for other problems (you mentioned your girlfriend...) or that drink is genuinely causing them. Either way I'd do something about it. Silly girls outside clubs cry for all manner of reasons. Adult men rarely do and I've never met any male drinker who's harmed themselves after a night out drinking (never mind more than once). It'll be easy for some to write me off as "overreacting" but I'm being serious here and it's not helping you at all if other posters downplay your symptoms. It's the easiest thing in the world to find people (even supposed friends) who'll say "ach, your fine" but not so many who'll tell you the hard truth. I really hope my words give you something to think about.gasteropod wrote:And I'm quite confused how you don't understand how drinking on a night out can sometimes cause depression, it's a pretty common thing and that's why you see girls just randomly crying and stuff outside clubs.... Stuff about me:-
-I'm incredibly cheap. I'll only drink alcohol if someone else is buying, it's too expensive.
-I hate drug users, fucking degenerates.
-I don't believe in God.
-I have no shame in admitting that I find certain sexual and racial stereotypes hilarious. If you can't take a joke, then you can fuck off, don't spoil other people's fun you whiny P.C. cunt.
-Apple products are steaming piles restrictive, DRM-infected shit for targeted at morons and hipsters.

People on here always say to me if I stop trying (or words to that effect) I will meet a girl, I never take enough opportunities
It felt horrible when you think a girl doesnt like you
I've felt very, very sad and even now, I feel as if my emotions go back and forth, but I never want to kill myself or something like that.
(Sorry for saying that BTW, like what IM said)

I imagine you're as hopeless as me Grim at noticing when a lass likes you.
It's possible I've had a few women fancy me but as women like waiting for the man to make the first move (which it's annoying to say the least) and I never spot this sort of thing ever, I've absolutely no idea.
Not one but two blokes fancying me in the last few weeks took me by surprise.
