Thanks. Is that all? That's peanuts to movie companies. They should be re-submitting more often

Foreign films are cheaper to classify on the basis not as many people will want to see them.

Yeah, but independent distributors suffer form those costs. It's nothing if you're Warners. And the fee has to be paid for EACH submission, so if you've got a film with original soundtrack plus two audio commentaries, say, that's THREE times you have to pay the full classification fee... then there's the cost of any extras (trailers, making ofs, etc...) It all adds up if you're only gonna sell so many thousand units.

I really hope that audio spec isn't complete .

Aren't American films also foreign? ;). That link doesn't mention foreign language films are being separate.

I imagine Bond would sell millions and even then it's peanuts to Warner.

Advance word has it that the USA BDs are Region-coded A and have original mono tracks.

Unfortunately the European discs will have remixes only. Ironically they're supposed to be region-free.

Fox cunts!!

EDIT: Region-A coding confirmed.

That's bad news. That just means we in Europe will have to skip these releases and wait another few years until they DO release these right.

I'm guessing they bend us over like this, cause they know James Bond is much more popular in Europe than it is in the USA, so here they can afford to first bring out a sub-par release, cause they know people will buy it... and that they will buy it AGAIN when they release a newer better box, 2-3 years later.

I cant believe the thickness, still, in bringing out movies in this kinda way :(
No original Mono. That's just a fucking joke.

Either they just figure that Europeans don't want original audio tracks, or something has to be cut to make way for other languages.

On the plus side, there are also reports that the remixes have had the problems from the DVD's fixed.

I think you'll be waiting a very long time for a re-release with original audio Yi-Long unfortunately :(

You've been able to buy multi-region BD Players for awhile now guys. It's a non-issue for me.

I always expect them to be region coded (this is Fox) and only have Mono on the USA (and likely Japanese) releases. Thanks btw Mark.

Where did you hear the European ones will be region free? I doubt it.
Joppers wrote:Either they just figure that Europeans don't want original audio tracks, or something has to be cut to make way for other languages.
It won't be the latter. Mono takes no space at all. I'm not sure what the reasoning is but Mono always gets chopped, not just Fox but most studios (except usually Warner).

Someone on a forum said they were region-free. It's not confirmed yet as far as I'm concerned. Treat it as a rumour for now. DVD-Basen has a couple of reviews of Mainland European BDs and no mono as feared. Why would the UK be any different? We're sheep after all. Why do studios do anything like this? Because they're fucking idiots who don't give a shit about fans. There's more than enough space for English mono and multiple Euro-dubs. If it turned out the original theatrical audio (that was good enough for 30 years no less!!) WAS dropped so we can have 5.1 dubs in French, German, etc... I'd be most bitter.

With DVD at least they could use the argument space was an issue, with multiple European dubs. A BD50 has so much space, they cannot use that excuse any more.

Are the mainland discs region locked?

Thanks btw.

Not sure yet but the advance word was no.

Looks like the first four films (the mono ones) won't be bought by me. I'll just get the later ones (stereo/digital sound).

The first stereo Bond film was Moonraker. Even on the very first DVDs, Thunderball and The Spy Who Loved Me were remixed too

Sorry I meant that the first four films are the only mono ones I want.

(Not bothered with You Only Live Twice to The Man With the Golden Gun)

The Spy Who Loved Me was the first Dolby Stereo film.

Do you now have a BD Player? If not I wouldn't presume that. I know you don't want to spend a lot on a BD Player but there's no reason to suspect the Multiregion BD Players won't drop in price. There's now a good selection, only price is holding them back.

You sure about Spy being Dolby? I see no credit on my copy of the film

I don't have a player yet... but I'm getting ever closer.

Need to save enough cash for the fuck-off big TV first. ;)

Interesting Ivan --

You're right about the SPY poster not containing the Dolby Stereo logo. Moonraker does - so perhaps you're correct? But I remember a while back reading about SPY being the first stereo movie and made on a massive budget.

These links make mention of it:

You'd be better off buying a HD Ready/Full HD TV first. When you have one look at BD Player prices. Until you have one it's a moot point.

I wouldn't get the BD Player first, buy the time you'll need it they'll be better and cheaper. Have a look at Multiregion Magic for Profile 1.1/2.0 Multiregion prices.

I think they are mistaken. Perhaps they are confusing the dvd with the actual film?

Neither would I unless the player was a one-off bargain.

I did a search for multi BDs and the prices from modifiers is scandalous. About £250 for the player and double it for the chip! Crazy. All region-coding has done is bugger fans and create a lucritive market for con men to make a fast buck.

I must admit I thought we'd start seeing some remote hackable players trickle out by now... but it ain't happening yet.......... :(

Sworn testimony that it was in fact originally mono.

Amusingly the same article has been posted in at least a half dozen different forums.

Pre-DVD USA VHS

Dolby Surround/Stereo

If originally mono then there must've been a remix done BEFORE the 5.1 remix.

Hmm...I think it was Stereo. Star Wars made Dolby HUGE, so maybe when Spy was prepared, they wern't poster worthy yet?

The Thunderball remix may be from laserdisc. It's pretty clunky in places

It shouldn't be that much but it is a premium. It's worth it though. Also remember these are often hardware/soldering type hacks, while not doubling the price that's harder to implement than remote ones. They charge £50-70 on average for hardware multi-region hacks on DVD Players/Recorders, which many models still require.

Despite being costly a BD Player is an invest that should last you years. Unlike DVD Players HD will remain a premium product for years yet.

I think that's because the BDA (Blu-ray Disc Associatian) are much tougher than the DVD Forum ever was with manufacturers adding remote hacks to their kit.
