As a kid I never perceived it as racisme, and it didnt alter/form my opinion about africans or whatever. I just took some characters as stupid and some, like TintIn, as good and smart. But I never relaly made the differentiation between black and white. Not consciously at least. To me it seemed logical that people in Africa weren't as smart (yet) as 'the white man', simply because we are the rich west and they havent advanced as much yet. There are still many people poor and 'stupid' over there.

Ofcourse it was all written in a time where most european people didnt know too much about africa and stuff, so you also have to judge the material that came out back then as such. Later on Herge became much more perfectionistic in portraying a realistic picture of different cultures etc.

Anyway, the 'racisme' never bothered me. Not as a kid (didnt even know there was racisme in it), and not as a grown-up. They're just adventure stories. Jackie Chan movies also have these stereotypes fo african tribe people in them (Armour of God, Who Am I). So what?

In The Blue Lotus story, Mitsuhirato (sp?) seems like a Japanese stereotype, but he's clearly a bad dude. I noticed that in the "Baltic" countries Herge made up (Syldavia, Borduria etc) everyone was either poor, or quite shifty/evil.
But its just an adventure, Russia WAS a poor country (is?) and were often the bad guys in adventure stories.

Yeah, I dont know why everyone is taking it all too seriously. They're adventure comics, and especially back in that time they didnt even KNOW about being PC, especially in entertainment. Just look at all kinds of entertainment, and you dont even have to go back 60-70 years, but even the kung fu movies in the 70's were full of stereotypes etc. Who fucking cares?

I know it's all deeper then that, and we now live in a different world etc... but let it rest

There's PC and there's OTT PC.

Er thats why I said it many posts back

thousands of people think its racist, not just the Congo stuff either. Theres so much more racist stuff in it its hilarious.

Tintin banished to adults only section after racism claims

Borders bookstores in New Zealand have removed copies of Tintin in the Congo from the children's section because of allegations the book is racist.
The book has already received similar treatment in Britain and the United States.
Borders Asia Pacific said yesterday it had advised all stores in New Zealand and Australia on Tuesday to reshelve the illustrated book in the graphic novels section.
"Borders is committed to carrying a wide range of materials and supporting our customers' right to choose what to read and what to buy. That said, we are also committed to acting responsibly as a retailer and with sensitivity to all of the communities we serve," it said.
"Therefore, with respect to the specific title Tintin in the Congo, which could be considered offensive by some of our customers, we have decided to place this title in a section of our store intended primarily for adults - the graphic novels section.
"We believe adults have the capacity to evaluate this work within historical context and make their own decision whether to read it. Other Tintin titles will remain in the children's section."

Peter Jackson will join Steven Spielberg to direct and produce three films based on the Belgian comic-strip, which was created by Georges Remi.
Tintin in the Congo, published in 1931, is the second in a series of 23 following the adventures of intrepid reporter Tintin and his dog, Snowy. The series has sold 220 million copies worldwide.
London-based human rights lawyer David Enright told the Associated Press the book contained racist abuse. "The material suggests to [children] that Africans are sub-human."
Whitcoulls said it did not plan to follow Borders' lead. "It's a bit of a storm in a teacup," a spokeswoman said. "It's a product of its time."

Exclusive: Andy Serkis Talks Tintin

We got the chance to catch up with Andy Serkis recently and, when not trying to coerce him into recording Gollum answerphone messages, we spoke to him about his role in the upcoming trilogy Tintin.

Though he's keeping schtum on his actual role (it's strongly rumoured that he'll play Captain Haddock), he did say that he's already started work on the project in New Zealand.

"It was on the Avatar stage," Serkis told us, referring to James Cameron's currently shooting 3D CG sci-fi bonanza. "We had this incredible week. Cameron was there, Peter Jackson was there (who's directing one of the three Tintin films), and Steven Spielberg was there (who's directing another). All in the same room!"

Which means that the film will be using the same technology as Avatar, which shows the characters in their (almost) final form on monitors, even though they're only in lycra body stockings on set. "You're on a bare, empty stage with actors standing around in blue Lycra with dots on, but [on the monitor] the director is looking into a fully rendered, three-dimensional virtual set, with the actors as their characters".

It would be too much to hope that Cameron's involvement at this early stage might mean he'll direct the third film. Wouldn't it?

Obviously, we also had to ask Serkis about the possibility of reprising his role as Gollum for the upcoming Hobbit movie. The character appears briefly in the book, playing a riddle game with Bilbo. Though there's no script and no certainty that he'll be written into it, Serkis says "I think I'd find it very hard to turn down the opportunity to play Gollum again, because he's become very much a part of me. For good or bad, he's still very much there!".
