chenlung wrote:The artwork does look slapped onto the Blu-Ray template (look at the graphic 'overflowing' at the top), but it was the logo that convinced me that it could have been a genuine one. BCI were able to put it on (at least on reversible use), so I would imagine it's possible for Vivendi.
Off the top of my head, Joysales seems to be the only other company that uses poster art for covers. Somehow, I dont think Vivendi(are they not a subsidiary of Universal?) will use poster art. They usually tend to the standard photoshop fare.

Anyways, im curious to know if this is a worthy upgrade or just an upscale job. Also, wonder what kind of extras will be included.

That link says The Killer is also getting a BD release. It must be their first.

Technically, 36th Chamber is their first BD which would make The Killer their 2nd BD release.

Don't give a fuck about the extras as long as they get the film right, and at this stage it's a dubious prospect.

Agreed. Why do they even need quotes? Has anyone here ever bought a DVD or BD because Bumfluff Movies.com has given it a "kick-ass ***** rating"?

What are you going on about! Those quotes haven't been placed there by DD, they are embroidered into Jet's jacket in the film! You couldn't see them before in standard-definition, that's all!

At least the new cover doesn't acknowledge Yuen-woo Ping as director! :D

On that note, they should put on on his hairdo as well. "Awesome" right above his brow :D

But I guess Average Joe will buy films for quotes, even I remember many a year ago I bought one from what a cover said (sad I know). It was the rather average StormRiders.
I do remember seeing it on a shelf in WHSMITH it was cheap and the quote was something like AWESOME! better than Crouching Tiger, Box Office sensation 10 times more cash made etc... etc.. haha ahh thoese were the days, when I was a fool (well not much has changed then).

Cover looks OK. Yeah, the quotes are a bit unneccesary, but TBH I don't mind them to much. The rest of the cover looks good enough.

I won't be buying it, obviously, as it's not the cut that I'm used to and want. I want the uncut version that Siren released on VHS, which was perfect.

I was thinking about this today, but pretty much my whole top 5 favourite asian movies don't have a decent DVD/BR release:
1: Days of Being Wild (although the newest BR is supposedly the best it's ever looked, so who knows...)
2: Drunken Master 2.
3: Fist of Legend.
4: My Sassy Girl.
5: Ashes of Time.

I'm not german, so what would that disc have to offer me? Maybe if it's the uncut version and it's release dwith english or dutch subs, it would be interesting, but no news that tells me that's the case.

The AU VHS release had some extra scenes, like a short scene with Chin Siu Hu smoking opium or something. I'm not sure of all the changes cause I have only watched the uncut version, never bothered with the cut version, and I'm too lazy to find the link to the site that lists all the differences.

I believe there is also a small training-scene missing, where Jet learns a form from Chin Siu Ho, but I could be wrong.

The opium smoking bit is in the Mandarin version isn't it?
I know you're not German :P However the recent German release has an excellent transfer (port from the French), uncut HK version, original Cantonese track, English subtitles :)

The remastered Korean/HK DVD is also supposed to be good but it has no English subs.
Yi-Long wrote:4: My Sassy Girl.
This has decent Korean and HK DVDs. The English subtitles on the Korean DVD really are no problem.

...which kinda makes it useless ;)

Usually it's the international version, and not the director's cut (which is the best version). Plus I believe the Hong Kong versions have the music changed.

I actually do have the korean director's cut on DVD, but I'm keeping that sealed cause it's the pretty rare 3-disc Yupki Girl version (with heartshaped soundtrack).

That's the one I have. Decent PQ, Full-rate DTS, Director's Cut and English subs. Like I said the subtitles are perfectly fine. There are far worse DVDs that need fixing, than this one.

p.s - You said DOBW had no decent version. I was just pointing out, it does. I've seen DOBW twice and both times I found it pretty good but no more. It's no CE, ITMFL or 2046 for sure. The latter two being fantastic.

I'll buy FIST OF LEGEND if it's uncut, has decent subs, good HD picture, and Cantonese mono.

I'm not holding my breath. :|

"Good HD picture" is so open to subjective opinion. There's no way you (or Romero) will ever be happy. Perfection taking literally, simply isn't possible for these films and to expect so, is expecting too much. There's nothing "really" wrong with the DD DVDs (save for cuts maybe) but bitch you will still.

Take HKL's FOF PE for example. You bitched for years about FOF should be in Mandarin. The HKL PE gave us this but oh no, it was then suddenly too pink. Ignoring the fact, otherwise it looks fantastic. Blah, Blah, Blah, Blah, Blah, Yawn. Your expectations are so boringly OTT, I don't believe you'll ever be 100% happy.

It just gets so dull to hear "all I expect is decent", when frankly that's bollocks. It's not as if we're talking Hollywood movies here. These films have been kept in such low quality and made on such low budgets. To expect perfection, is simply unrealistic. I don't mean just you Mark, Romero and others are just as far stuck up their own arses when it comes to expectations.

As long as the FOL BD is an improvement over the French DVD (which is excellent), then I'd be happy. Personally I don't rate the film that highly. OUATIC 1-3 are much better.
