Nonsense. QOS was a solid action film. So what if it wasn't Casino Royale? It was better than MANY other Bonds including the two Roger Moore's you mention below.bradavon wrote:It certainly was, utter rubbish. The only recent Bond that is worse, is Die Another Day (easily the worst of all of them).
Come on! For Your Eyes Only is almost as dumb as Moonraker in parts. Bond playfully slapping a bald Blofeld when he's just come from visiting his wife's grave! The jailbait blonde skater offering her body to a man old enough to be her grandfather. A car chase in a VW Beetle. Maggie Thatcher talking to a Parrot. Bill Conti's ridiculously bad score.I saw "For Your Eyes Only" on TV again yesterday. I'd forgotten how good it is. So much better than the pantomime "A View to a Kill" from the week before. It's maybe one of his best, playing it mostly straight. Too many Moore Bonds went for camp over realism. I liked how it had no dungeon lair or over the top villain.

I'm surprised you went for the DVD. Is it for the kids?saltysam wrote:Region 2 runs 1:41:53 according to my dvd drive.
Thanks.Markgway wrote:We don't know yet. Waiting for someone to compare them. If all versions are cut the same I'll go for the R2.
Action it is, solid it is not.Markgway wrote:Nonsense. QOS was a solid action film.
I'm not one of the ones who was expecting it to be. I was still very let down, as a film in it's own right.Markgway wrote:So what if it wasn't Casino Royale?
I disagree. Golden Gun is dumb in places but not enough to hinder it (ala Die Another Day). For Your Eyes Only is played surprisingly mostly straight, especially for a Moore Bond. It also has no dungeon lair or over the top villain.Markgway wrote:It was better than MANY other Bonds including the two Roger Moore's you mention below.
To be fair, that is only the first few minutes. Lets face it all Moore Bonds are dumb in places (it's just how they were filmed) but what "For Your Eyes Only" is, is a well made film. Something QOS certainly isn't. In other words "it holds up".Markgway wrote:Bond playfully slapping a bald Blofeld when he's just come from visiting his wife's grave!
What was wrong with that? It's more realistic than a super duper sports car. I'll give you the other points but like I said all Moore films are dumb to an extent.Markgway wrote:A car chase in a VW Beetle.
I rarely remember scores or have a problem with them. You forgot how Moore deliberately and vindictively kicks the car over the cliff, containing the villain of the piece.Markgway wrote:Bill Conti's ridiculously bad score.
Besides QOS and FYEO aren't really comparable, they're of a different age. My point being QOS was a poorly made film, enough of (IMO).
It was supposed to be creepy. That would've been one step too far, which I doubt they would've contemplated.grim_tales wrote:Thank God Bond turned the teenage skater down. That was creepy
Yes. I'm sure she was playing someone much younger though.saltysam wrote:Are talking about Lynn Holly Johnson's character? (haven't seen it) she was 23 when For Your Eyes Only came out.
I've no problem with the action really, just pretty much everything else. It was so poorly executed.luckystars wrote:Not fair - the epic opening car chase, and that especially brutal fight in the apartment (one on one) were what kept QoS from being a total disappointment for me

Ach, to each his own. You watch Golden Gun, I'll watch Solace. And then we're both happy.bradavon wrote:I'm not one of the ones who was expecting it to be. I was still very let down, as a film in it's own right.
Golden Gun is worse than Die Another Day. The first half hour is good - but it falls apart when Bond gets to Asia. Britt Ekland got right on my tits. Maud Adams should've been the main girl. Something they rectified with Octopussy. I'm curious why you can forgive the "dumb" bits in the Moore films but not DAD? The CGI surfing is K-rap but I enjoyed the rest as popcorn fun. Maybe you need to give it another go on DVD? Like you I wasn't impressed at the cinema.I disagree. Golden Gun is dumb in places but not enough to hinder it (ala Die Another Day).
Yes, but it instantly strips any genuine emotion from Bond. For Your Eyes Only has very good parts - but also some really bad parts that make it an uneven entry. The Spy Who Loved Me is a better film and Octopussy is more entertaining IMO.To be fair, that is only the first few minutes.
James Bond in a fucking Love Bug(!)What was wrong with that? It's more realistic than a super duper sports car.
That's the best scene. Although I also like the mountain climb. Like I said very good IN PARTS.You forgot how Moore deliberately and vindictively kicks the car over the cliff, containing the villain of the piece.
True.Besides QOS and FYEO aren't really comparable, they're of a different age.
I think she's supposed to be between 16 and 18. When she says she's not a virgin I almost groaned with discomfort. I actually felt for poor Rog having to do that scene - it made him look like an old man. Funny thing is the actress in question - Lynn Holly Johnson - was actually only ONE YEAR younger than the French girl playing his lover - Carole Bouquet. It was supposed to be creepy. That would've been one step too far, which I doubt they would've contemplated... Yes. I'm sure she was playing someone much younger though.
Found this on the IMDB: "The video release is missing a scene in the skating change room where the teenage Bibi Dahl tries to seduce James Bond by lyeing on the table and removing her panties from underneath her skirt."
Anyone seen this scene? Doesn't ring any bells? Must be also cut from the DVD.

No but sounds like they cut out a bit of realism generally lacking from the Bonds.Markgway wrote:...the teenage Bibi Dahl tries to seduce James Bond by lyeing on the table and removing her panties from underneath her skirt."

QOS? It was never specifically cut by the BBFC, apparently the filmmakers put on an informal screening for the BBFC to get advice on what sort of rating to expect etc. I don't know if they showed them a full cut of the film or just certain scenes that were more mature in content; but anyway the BBFC decided what they saw would probably achieve a 15 rating, and suggested toning down one or two scenes to safeguard a 12A. So I believe Forster then went back and edited the film down slightly and submitted this edited down version to the BBFC for classification, which passed uncut for 12A.
The MPAA passed QOS uncut a month or so before the BBFC officially rated it, so the big question is what version of the film did the MPAA recieve? Did Forster send them the precut print that was sent to the informal BBFC screening, or was it a print that had already been seen by the BBFC and had the edits applied (but not officially submitted to the BBFC yet).

I daresay this is a misprice, the pre-order for a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 25th anniversary 3-disc set is £4.98. It's the first two series of the show, plus unseen episodes and bonus features.
