Btw, Five Deadly Venoms is up for pre-order on Amazon... looks like it may be official after all. But for now, it sadly looks like the only DD Shaws DVD coming out then. I was fairly certain Return to the 36TH Chamber would make an appearance sometime.

Hell, I'd like to see the two official follow up One Armed Swordsman films get releases as well. And while they're at it, fecking release Boxer From Shantung already! I know they have the rights to it! I mean, that film was the first (I believe) to really make use of "The Axe Gang" and also made Chen Kuan Tai a "Shaw Star".

Eh, I guess the "classics" not selling well slowed down, you know, the movies we REALLY want from getting proper releases. Guess that's why most of the releases now have been brand new films, or rehashing cut Jet Li films. I want larger Shaw batches like we had two years ago! 4 at a time! Oh well... bitching and moaning on my part won't solve anything... although it'll make me feel a bit better for short bursts of time :D

Yeah, they were frightened their core audience would know what 'wits' meant. Probably.

In the US that was retitled 'From China with Death'... so that'll be a 'no'.

Bey Logan is hinting (via an email) that The Killer may be DD's next release. But DD had no fourth quarter releases in '08 so I assume it won't be out until the new year.

I'm guessing 2 disc release this time. I'm happy with my HKL.

The only issue I have with the HKL is the poor 5.1 audio.

I watched the HKL yesterday. To me, the remix just lacks the "oomph" of the mono version I taped off Channel 4, the music sounds nice but the gunplay is rendered flat. Heard worse though. The picture isn't too hot - way too much noise reduction

HKL's image is as reasonable as any; they've all got flaws.

Yeah, the 5.1 is dull and lacking in impact.

I thought that was good? You hate full-on 5.1 remixes. You cannot have it both ways :).

Personally I agree but I prefer it to over the top/in your face 5.1 remixes.

Yeah, HKL tended to have very weak sound mixes, although Media Asia may be to blame there. The original mono tracks, barring noice reduction, usually sound far better. I mean, on HKL's Dragon Lord you can barely hear anything!

Mark is not contradicting himself at all here, once again Brad you make an inflammatory, snidey remark about a comment that was perfectly logical and reasonable.

I'll spell it out as clarly as I can so that it may sink in: Mark doesn't like 5.1 REMIXES of MONO/STEREO FILMS - ie: ADDED FOLEY EFFECTS. Added sound effects Brad, you know - ALTERING THE ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK. Criticising any alterations to the original sound is obviously not the same as criticising a 5.1 track for presenting the original sounds in a very flat, restrained manner.

So yes, you can criticise a 5.1 remix for sounding restrained without being a hypocrite, as criticising it for added sound effects is a completely different thing altogether.

What Spannick said... :D

Media Asia's 5.1 remix only adds minor background noise to the original mono. I don't like it, of course, but it's nowhere near as bad as what Fortune Star do. The foley and music are original that I can recall. Unfortunately they're buried within the mix. By spreading out a 1.0 source all the oomph has been diluted. In mono the gunshots sound much cooler.

If Dragon Dynasty could manage to equal HKL's image (which is about as balanced as I've seen) and subtitles (unfortunately unlikely) with original in-sync mono they could be onto a winner. I'd sacrifice any extras for that.

Fair enough Mark. I just meant, considering "there is no mono" then a 5.1 mix of the type of The Killer is the better of two evils over the type Fortune Star release, no? As said I do agree it lacks oomph, over the Mono.

I've not bothered to read your hyperbole drivel Shing (bar the first sentence). I've better things to do. Insult me all you like, none of it adds any value. Knock yourself out!

Clearly only you read my remarks as snidey given that Ivan, Mark and Lost Dragon didn't rant at me and all of which are likely to, if they found the remarks insulting. As ever you're deliberately looking for insults, when none exist, purely because it suits your disposition.

I have no problem with remixes that basically sound like the original film. 5.1 is really just a name. Its when they remake the sound, or tamper too much, that I get mad

Can anybody give an opinion on this movie? Is it wire fu fest or does it have legit fight choreography? The storyline/plot looks decent enough

Interesting perspective. Many, many 5.1 remixes of Stereo sources sound 99% identical to the stereo source to me (particularly when it's a Western film from a Western studio). I have no problem with those.
