Strange because I've heard McKellan usually swallows.bradavon wrote:Now you mention it. I remember seeing something on the news about his character being a bit of a spitter.

Universal Soldier BD 3.5/5
Van Damme actioner still holds up well today, fast paced and never boring.the blu-ray transfer is a revelation and blows the dvd release away.
Universal Soldier:The Return BD 2/5
Weak sequel passes the time readily enough through it's short running time.not helped by a lame bad guy performance by wrestler Goldberg and a pretty weak script.

Weren't there two Universal Soldier TV sequels made before The Return? I recall seeing one of them and The Return didn't necessarily ignore its plot.
I saw The Return in theatres with my dad. I thought it was okay at the time, I saw it several years later on TV (long after I had developed critical facilities) and it was a big pile of arse.
I did rather like Michael Jai White as the villain though, it's a shame that his career didn't take off, he's a good action film lead. Maybe that new Blaxploitation parody film that he's in will jump start it again?

IMO the opposite. It's indeed a direct remake and if you've seen the over-rated original then there is no reason to watch the remake. But as an individual fim, Quarantine is the better of the two. This is mainly because the characters aren't as irritating as in Rec. Possibly the camerawork was also less hectic, but I can't say for sure.saltysam wrote:Quarantine BD 3/5
A Solid but unnecessary remake of the excellent spanish Horror REC,this is well made but ultimately inferior to the original.doesn't veer far from it's source,it's almost shot for shot at times. worth a watch but catch the spanish version if you can.

you prefer to watch an inferior remake because you don't like subtitles?Granted,Quarantine is one of the better ones but 90% of usa remakes fall way short of the originals.romerojpg wrote:Sometimes people canot be arsed with sodding subtitles, me included. I get so sick of them sometimes, its far to much work reading and missing little things going on behind them, so I personally like seeing the remakes for that reason alone.

Nope, I said I get sick of subs sometimes, its painful to sit thru them at times. You miss far to much while you are reading, somefilms (esspecially Shaw Brothers I find) ruin whats on screen, as you read the crappy subs and miss the action.
But its not as if all the remakes are worse anyway, many are as good or better I find. Or just so different that they are no longer a remake, but a different film.
Unlike many I acctually look forward to most remakes with open arms.

I grew up here in Holland, so most programs and movies I watched were always already subtitled.
Only when I'm tired, or when the screen is too big, is when I can feel 'annoyed' at times when I feel like I'm having to constantly shift my eyes between the subs and the movie...
Usually, it's all just 1 thing: you kinda watch and read the subs at the same time.

I was there, the big BNB blackout of november, 2008. We lost many that day...
