The person in charge of TCM's special features obviously had a very hard job to do. I'm not gonna hold that against them. I'm just glad it's no longer a two disc release with 2 hours of Bey and Brett "celebrating" the film.

There is that to be thankful of. I'd rather have 1 disc of decent extras than 2 discs of rubbish ones.

I'm curious to know why Jet, Michelle and the Yuen Clan don't feature.

DD/HKL rarely seem to get the main stars to contribute.

They don't have to speak English to conduct an interview - subtitled commentaries have happened too :). Aside from that, it can be a money issue with the contributors and/or they are happy to talk, but not appear themselves (or not at all).

On Brett's appearance (I imagine like last time, he has volunteered his time): the commercial appeal is good and does work to an extent, but it can't be stretched too far as it'll be evident he's being milked when the film has to healthily stand out on it's own too (especially if he's not worked with the stars before, or isn't associated with the film) - the only one that makes it on is Chin Siu Ho sadly. I'm curious about Yuen Cheung Yan, Yuen Woo Ping, Fennie Yuen, Jet and Michelle.

If the role is too small to 'qualify' as a standalone interview, they could do a making-of featurette featuring snippets of everyone (like HKL did with 'Warriors Two').

Bey mentioned on one of his earlier blogs that big HK film "stars" never grant interviews, sighting time as a main factor. I think it's just because they hate Americans / westerners. Plain and simple.

Of course.

Do the main public know how Ratner is? I doubt it. He's not got to the level of Tarantino or Spielberg in people knowing who he is.

That's a pity. Donnie Yen has done some. I cannot be that hard to find time for a 20 minute interview. It's a shame as they're the ones most people want to see on the extras.

I doubt that's why. Many of them have starred in Hollywood films, it must bring them major cash, they won't see back home.

Li and Yeoh are more Hollywood stars than HK nowadays anyway, but either way they're simply too high profile for DD. They've also been filming The Mummy 3 and are about to embark on a no doubt lengthy publicity campaign for that.

To big for their boots is one way to say it, why bother with a crappy dvd thats gonna sell a few thousands copies when you can get massive cash for doing other things. I am sure they all get asked to do dvds and the sort from all over the world every week, no way they would have time for them all.

Esspecially if the films shit and they want to forget it :D

I can understand if they can't speak English or are dead (or both), but even someone as busy as Simon Yam, who makes 2 or 3 movies at once, grants interviews on a regular basis. Michelle Yeoh has appeared in only 2 or 3 movies in the last 5 years!

What makes you say that? Thats a rather stupid accusation to make

I wager they want too much money these days - there are plenty of pre-98 low-rent Western interviews with Jet Li, Jackie Chan and Lau Kar Leung

Simon Yam appears very unpretentious and an all round nice guy (he adopts foreign orphans!!)

Lau Ka-Leung is a different story and I don't know what the deal is there - but the like of Jackie, Jet, Michelle, etc, are too rich and too busy to bother with DVD releases of OLD movies.

Can we really compare Michelle Yeoh and Jet Li to Simon Yam though? As i've said in my earlier post, Lee and Yeoh are now more Hollywood stars than Chinese, and how many Hollywood stars do you see on DVDs not released in conjunction with big film studios these days?

Exactly, before they cracked Hollywood. I'd wager it's more that their Hollywood agents just won't bother booking time for them with small independant labels anymore. Part of the reason for that (probably a big part) has got to be the money.

Oh, I wasn't really comparing them as such, I realise that Yam has more to gain in promoting older movies than the Hollywood stars. If Jet has to divide his time between promoting The Forbidden Kingdom and Tai Chi Master, which do you think he's gonna bother with?

Just sold my old Fist of Legend, so will upgrade :) would be nice to get a HD version, but hell I dont expect that any time soon, and in HD I am sure the stunt doubles would be even worse, saying that they cannot get much worse.

Which DVD did you own Romero?

Hopefully this will at least match the wonderful French disc, which looks great.
