Happy Times
Wow, what a great movie. Funny on the one hand, dramatic on the other hand. Now I want to see more of Yimou´s non martial arts epics...
4/5

Btw: I loved Sin City :D

Watch "The Road Home" and "Not One Less", dh005.

His latest film "Riding Alone for Thousands of Miles" is on its way to me already. Will let you know if it is any good.

Sin City - 3.5/5

As I said before, really stylish film which is stunning to look at. I loved the fact its shot in black and white with mere splashes of colour (a similar technique was used in "Pleasantville"). It really adds to the comic book feel of the film.
HOWEVER, I don't think the film has much substance. I found the first half especially rather dull and its stories weak (the last part is a bit better), the scenes of violence are sometimes OTT and pretty nasty.
IMO Bruce Willis probably gives the best performance of the film in his story playing Artikan (sp?) the cop. His showdown with the yellow guy called "Junior" (a gurning Nick Stahl, who for some reason sounds more like Joe Pesci or Joe Pantagliano) is great :D )

Amelie - 5/5
Why has no one mentioned this film before, it is such a beautiful film and the music is so excellent. I really want the main theme. The lead actress is sooooo cute as well, especially when she looks at the camera once she has done something. The same face which is on the menu of the dvd.

It took the world by storm when it got released, but now pretty much everybody has stopped talking about it. :D

Sad Movie (Korea, 2005) - 4.5/5
Well everyone knows that i enjoy Korean melodramas more then the average person..but 'Sad Movie' really was excellent, and is indeed sad as the very creative title indicates. The script is interestingly crafted as it follows 4 different stories in a way that flows together nicely. The stories are somewhat predictable, but they still worked very well. HIGHLY recommended if you like this kind of stuff

Howl's Moving Castle - 4.5/5
Another wonderful film from Miyazaki and Ghibli. The character development of the main character Sophie was similar to that of Chihiro in Spirited Away (the only other Miyazaki film that I've at the mo). The film did get a little bogged down by the anti-war themes at times though. The R4 kicks ass (for once). Lovely progressive native PAL transfer plus an awesome DD5.1 track, haven't bothered with the extras disc yet.

I've only seen a small handful of Miyazaki titles but felt that this was his weakest effort, although still a wonderful film as you say. It felt like he recycled themes and characters from previous movies to create this one.

In the Mood for Love

4/5

Hero(1997)

I´m not talking about Zhang Yimous "Hero". I´m talking about this 1997 Shaw Brothers movie, starring Takeshi Kaneshiro and Yuen Biao. I know, there is nothing so special about it, but I love it. It´s one of my favourites. i could watch it over and over again...

Crying Fist 3/5

Watchable Korean boxing melodrama, but nothing spectacular.

Date Movie 0/5

Alongside Bio-dome, this may actually be the worst film of all time.

Shogun's Shadow 4,5/5
Damn, this is what I've been looking for. Decent story, great visuals and and fantastic action choreography. The best chambara film since Lone Wold and Cub...

Failan 3/5
Everyone seems to love this film, but it left me a bit cold. It's definitely a good movie, but it didn't break my heart like I expected it to.

Hot Shots 1,5/5
Not funny, just irritating. I did laugh a couple of times, but that's not much considering there's like 5000 jokes (that are supposed to be funny).

Crying Fist would get 4.5 or 5 from me. Loved it.

American Yakuza 4/5

Aye, reminded me of Point Break... with Yakuza replacing the surfers. Some stunning cinematography and use of music. Nice simple story and rather fun to watch.

Los Debutantes 4.5/5

I don't think I'm ever going to look at whipped cream the same way again.

It's quite a seductive yet gritty love story between a girl and two brothers. The situation is made more complex when they discover that she is a mob leader's girlfriend. The chronological order is handled quite nicely; characters who may appear like decent people initially show an uglier side later on.

Aye if you liked Amores Perros, then you'll probably enjoy Los Debutantes.

V for Vendetta 4.5/5
I can understand why anyone would find this "decidedly average", if their expecations are yet another mindless action heavy Hollywood flopbuster. I haven't read the graphic novel but found the film adaptation to be remarkably thought-provoking and visually delicious. It shows two sides to an individual - one is a terrorist determined to assassinate Government members and cause chaos, the other is a freedom fighter adding balance to a cruel and corrupt society. I am sure that many of us will be able to relate the themes with events that have been reported by the media. I love the alternate future setting and the (almost) all British cast, not to mention the tie-in with Guy Fawkes. Ridiculously entertaining.
