Nukenin (Japan, 2009) – 2/5
Good kunoichi (female ninja) movies are a rare treat. Alien vs. Ninja duo director Seiji Chiba and actress Mika Hijii attempt one with mini-budget but fall short. The opening is terrific though, kicking off with two excellently choreographed action scenes. Unlike the standard Japanese female action stars – pretty idols and soft core actresses – Hijii is a talented action performer and handles the choreography well. The standard storyline is unfortunately beyond any interest, and there’s neither humor nor aliens that made Chiba’s later film such a crowd pleaser. Shot on digital with no merits to mention, even at 70 minutes the film tends to drag between the action bits. The fights are good but it must be said the best action bits are found right in the beginning.

Golgo 13 (Japan, 1973) – 3/5
Name: Duke Togo. Time of birth: unknown. Place of birth: unknown. Nationality: unknown. Profession: sniper. Hard to come across a cooler opening than the fore mentioned information displayed next to a b&w mugshot of Japan’s all time most charismatic movie badass, Ken Takakura. Toei’s first live action adaptation of Takao Saito’s hugely popular manga doesn’t redeem all of its potential and stumbles with storyline, but is nevertheless an entertaining piece of Japanese action cinema. The setting is most unusual: shot entirely in Iran with mostly Iranian supporting cast – with the entire Middle East speaking fluent Japanese! The unique setting, somewhat underused but stylish M16-action, spaghetti western esque imagery, and above all, Takakura’s unparalleled screen presence raise the film slightly above the 1977 adaptation starring Sonny Chiba.

Aces Go Places IV (1986) - while not as good as first and second, it's miles better than the third installment. Great stunts, an awesome car chase and some working comedy. Mr. Ringo Lam knows how to entertain his audiences. 3/5

A Night in Nude (Japan, 1993) – 3.5/5
"I will participate any event in place of you". Private entrepreneur Muraki (Naoto Takenaka) runs an unusual business, usually ending up participating memorials for strangers or taking dogs out for a walk. One day he's contacted by a woman called Nami, a violent yakuza boss' lover. "I’m a tourist from Fukuoka. I need a city guide" she claims. Takashi Ishii's neo-noir A Night in Nude is perfect cinema for its opening 25 minutes. Visually breathtaking and brilliantly scripted it's yet another reminder of what a hugely promising director and screenwriter Ishii was in the 1980's and early 1990's. Unfortunately the storyline doesn’t quite hold when Ishii starts to unravel the mystery, but the film still packs some of the most atmospheric scenes in recent memory. Takenaka is terrific, supported by Ishii regulars Kimiko Yo (Nami), Jinpachi Nezu (yakuza boss), Kippei Shiina (mad dog gay yakuza), and Iron Man Tomorowo Taguchi in an inappropriately overdone transvestite role.

Alone in the Night (Japan, 1994) – 3/5
Sometimes mistaken as a part of the Angel Guts series, Takashi Ishii’s neo noir follows a murdered cop’s wife who infiltrates the yakuza network. While not among Ishii’s best films, Alone in the Night is nevertheless a stylish thriller with all the director’s trademarks from neon light visuals to a mix of sex, violence and distinctly romantic core tone. Living up to its title (Yoru ga mata kuru; The Night Falls Again) there is not a single shot of daylight in the film. Cinematography is courtesy of two frequent Ishii collaborators: Yasushi Sasakibara, and Norimichi Kasamatsu who is not Takashi but Sogo Ishii’s right hand man. Casting is clever as well: Jinpachi Nezu plays as an honorable antihero (compare ruthless yakuza boss in A Night in Nude), Kippei Shiina is a violent yakuza (compare sympathetic loser in Gonin), and Naoto Takenaka, the leading actor from A Night in Nude, appears in a 30 second cameo as a dirty pimp. Yui Natsukawa, up in popularity in the recent years due to television dramas and Hirokazu Koreeda arthouse dramas, portrays Nami, a role that earned her some delayed popularity due to the roughness of it.

Surpasses the 2nd film on all levels. It's a beautiful and stunning movie and the action and filming style are simply staggering. Really the ultimate in what a good film's about. A rare gem of a film by modern standards

Ip Man: Decent enough, but I only get my kicks from '80s martial arts films really.
The Good, The Bad, The Weird: Loads of fun! Albeit a bit too long.

Yeah I hot that the general reception for Ip Man that it was a great movie, great Martial Arts. I thought the movie was nothing spectacular (but the Kung Fu and filming style were nice though). Good Pop corn stuff though, if a bit cheesy on the story. 7.5/10

Dasepo Naughty Girls: Bizarre comedy, I enjoyed it but the image was 2.35:1 squashed to 1.78:1 on Lovefilm. Some of the cutest Korean girls I've ever seen!

Gonin (Japan, 1995) – 3,5/5
Takashi Ishii’s most famous film is an all star yakuza movie. Ishii’s pink cinema roots are practically invisible here with the only sexual tension rising from openly homosexual overtones. Ishii’s typical strong female characters are almost entirely missing. The director’s other stylistic trademarks from neon lights and constant rain are easily visible, though. What comes as a surprise is Kinji Fukasaku esque gangster realism that sends central characters to the mortuary every 10 minutes. The character gallery does lean a bit too much on extremes, though – from gay assassins to half-retards and maniacs Ishii pushes the film a bit too far. The extended director’s cut adds some good characterization pieces to the film without making major quality difference compared to the 12 minute shorter theatrical version.

Gonin 2 (Japan, 1996) – 3.5/5
Ishii’s second Gonin film is strangely uneven but ultimately highly rewarding. The original Gonin was a hard boiled guy film with strong homosexual themes and almost no female characters. The sequel is a loose remake with reversed gender roles: five tough women set against the yakuza. The film stumbles with character introductions and stylistic choices in the beginning, but later turns into a more typical Ishii affair: atmospheric, violent, erotic, and aesthetically superb neo noir. Ken Ogata gives excellent support in the film’s only notable male role.

Kick the Moon: I didn't know what was going on for the first 20 mins or so but it was all right when the love interest appeared, wouldn't watch it again though.

Nightmare Detective: Very good, although I preferred it early on when it was more mysterious. It reminded me of Suicide Club.
Dark Tales of Japan: Not bad for an anthology, but Takashi Shimizu's contribution was very disappointing and pointless. Koji Shiraishi's was quite cool and interesting, and the one by the director of Premonition was quite clearly influenced by Kairo. The last entry had a kind of cool link to Infection (by the same director).

The Gold Snatchers 2/5

Indestructible Chen Sing is released from prison and goes after his deceitful brother played by perennial villain Lung Fei.Cue 75 minutes of brawling.Pretty predictable basher is entertaining enough and has the added bonus of Yasuaki Kurata showing up late on in proceeding.

Green Snake: Visually wonderful, but suffers from the usual Chinese melodrama and some laughable effects. Joey Wang and Maggie Cheung are absolutely stunning :o

Black Angel Vol. 1 (Japan, 1997) – 3/5
Takashi Ishii’s mishmash girl actioner is typical V-Cinema without even being V-Cinema. The opening is a missed opportunity: good characters and typically stylish Ishii visuals wasted on rushed filming and low budget. The film does improve before soon, though, and turns pretty damn good for a some time. And then later again, the film slows down and ignores the final touch well deserved by the excellent background & visual design. The casting is strong with supporting performances by tough guys Jinpachi Nezu and Kippei Shiina. A good film, but could’ve been so much better.

Black Angel Vol. 2 (Japan, 1999) – 4.5/5
Ishii returns to form with a stunning sequel to the uneven Black Angel. The second part improves on all areas: no more rushed scenes, no more dead segments, and no more budget problems. It’s still not quite as visually striking as Ishii’s early 90’s neo noir, but the screenplay is incredibly strong – Ishii’s best since Love Hotel (1985) – and there’s no lack of atmosphere. Ishii builds exceptionally good characters backed up by a first rate storyline. Thoroughly stylish and often masterful, Black Angel Vol. 2 is one of the very best Japanese crime films of the 1990’s.

Jungle Juice: I bought this years ago on one of my YesAsia rampages but never really got into it, I found it hard to follow for some reason. Today I just decided to give it another go and this time I enjoyed it a fair bit, had no problem following it, and I'm glad I never sold it now!

Hiruko the Goblin: A bit shit really, was expecting more with it being a Shinya Tsukamoto film, but it was just tiresome and empty. I did chuckle at the bit where the head sprouts wings and flies towards the camera, and when the archaeologist gets stuck inside a broken cardboard box when he's crawling backwards in terror

Les Formidables: An excellent thriller from the director of Jungle Juice, I was kept interested all the way through, shame it's not very well-known internationally.
