Brad, he means the film can't escape the fact/opinion that its a big budget film with a major star in it. Though if a 4.99999999 (recurring) film isnt up there with the greats I dont know what is :D

Well I meant 4.5/5 but it's a shame to say its not really in the best of the best category.

Still one of the best films of the 80's tho.

The smiley code was missing the colons, I've corrected the problem now: disgust.

Dead & Buried BD 3.5.5

Sedately paced, atmospheric 80's horror holds up well today. hard to believe this was once on the video nasty list as it's not particularly gory imo.the BD is a grainfest in keeping with the original film stock.

French Connection BD 4/5

Cracking 70's thriller holds up well today,Hackman & Scheider are superb as the cops on the trail of the french drug lord.unfortunately the BD features a brand new, colour timed transfer by Friedkin that just looks nothing like the film i know...gone is the gritty, drab pallete and in is this weird pastel coloured, pinkified version...don't like it.

Batman (1989) BD 3.5/5

This seems to be largely forgotten these days due to the rise of Nolan's Bat-movies but i still think this is pretty good.i actually prefer Keaton to Bale and i think Nicholson is a good Joker :) very atmospheric with a good cast, though Robert Wuhl as Knox the reporter was a little irritating.

It's a good film still IMO. It's not aged well though. Nicholson is a good joker. Keaten is way too weedy though.

I hear they've fucked with the French Connection colours :(.

I wonder why Friedkin changed the colours? If it was done by him persumably he approved the transfer?

sure he's weedy as Wayne.he's supposed to be a soft, rich playboy . anyway i prefer his take as Batman to that bizarre growl Bale uses as a voice when he's Batman.

He did indeed and brags about it on the featurette.he made the print b&w then added this horrible colour scheme to it.fair enough,he's the director but both options should be on there.don't forget, this is the guy who in the early days of dvd insisted his films be released fullframe on disc.

Only the hideous Prince music.
Nicholson is a good joker.
I prefer Ledger who's actually scary.
Keaten is way too weedy though.
I liked Keaton. He looked like he NEEDED a suit. :D

THE BOURNE IDENTITY 4/5

Solid, entertaining thriller takes a little time to get going but emerges a grabber. I'm not 100% convinced of Matt Damon as the planet's most lethal assassin, but he gives a good account regardless. Franke Potente adds a great deal as a somewhat feisty, but believeable enough love interest. Good, twisty plot; exciting, if a bit frantic action. I saw the TV movie from the 80s years ago but can't remember it well enough to compare. I suspect this take is faster and slicker.

THE BOURNE SUPREMACY 3/5

Plot-heavy sequel is absorbing most of the time, but the action sequences are are a real disappointment. Shaky, headache-threatening camerawork and rapid-fire editing make it almost impossible to make out what's going on? I might feel differently when I see it on DVD, but from my sole cinema viewing I much preferred the action in Quantum of Solace. Joan Allen is a good addition to the cast, but Franke is sorely missed, as is the emotional content. Hopefully ULTIMATUM which I've yet to see will cap of the series in style...

THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM 3/5

Still not up to the standard of 'Identity' but an entertaining conclusion to the trilogy. Better paced than 'Supremacy" the story still has some contrivances and holes (which even the deleted scenes struggle to explain). As it is are we supposed to believe that Bourne is a subscriber to The Guardian? lol. The script is so muddy that Bourne keeps showing up in places (particularly in the early going) with little or no explaination as to why? Sharper plotting and better action direction (Greengrass keep your camera still for two seconds) and I would've given this an extra star - as it's quite exciting and fun most of the time. I don't get why people say this is superior to Bond - it isn't.

Nicholson is a bit camp as the Joker and more like a panto villain.
I'll have to see watch the Bourne movies again now, Identity was awesome.

Yeah that is funny. It's not half as bad as Question of Sport though.

Superior to QOS = Yes
Superior to Bond = No

I don't get it either, there are plenty of excellent Bond films. They really meant "better than Die Another Day". Which it certainly is.

True. I would say all Bournes are way superior to Die Another Day, but better than Bond classics like Goldfinger, You Only Live Twice, Live and Let Die? I don't think so! (Hell no, in the case of the 1st two). Identity and Ultimatum are great films though, all 3 are worth owning.

I don't think anyone who said that stupid comment was thinking that far back.

I really need to see QOS again. It's like I saw a different movie to everyone else.

Totally incomparable. If you treat DAD as a comic strip it's good fun. The first time I saw it I expected something more dramatic and was disappointed. I'll watch Casino Royale for that.

THE RUINS (Australia/USA, 2008)
Excellent Terror-Thriller, a pleasant surprise. Five students on a vacation visit an old Mayan Temple which has been occupied by an ancient evil. You gotta work yourself through that awfully generic beginning, though, which establishes its characters just like any other Slasher/Backwood-Thriller would do, but then thankfully turns into something significantly more original and disturbing. Although most of the horror is psychological in nature, there's still a couple of really nasty and gory moments which will make you wince. Credits came rather sudden, though, but cutting away at the height of suspense is still better than a bad ending.

Me too. I may enjoy it more. The problem was, the expectations were so high after Casino Royale. Even without that, I still reckon I'd have disliked it. The story is so utterly poor. As Shingster said, take the action away and you have nothing left. This isn't the case with Bourne Ultimatum.
Markgway wrote:Totally incomparable.
Definitely but people compare them. Both are action spy films. Wrong I agree but it's true.
Markgway wrote:If you treat DAD as a comic strip it's good fun.
Personally I'm not interested in watching "Bond" like that. I'd still say it sucks. It's so utterly dumb. The sort of dumb I'd expect from a film like "The Fast and the Furious" NOT Bond. There's where the difference lies.

Bond isn't a B-Grade dumb action movie.
