Not so much though.

Even a downmixed 5.1 with foley added into Mono will only be one speaker compared with 6, add in whizzy effects from each speakers and it's worse.

Hence why I'd prefer both if we cannot choose.

Including downmixed mono would be a very bad idea IMO. It would just be confusing for the buyers because if the specs say Mono people expect to get the real mono. Accepting these downmixes when no real mono is available would also send the wrong message. Companies would start thinking it's alright as long as the track is technically mono, no matter if it's downmixed and german language.

Re-read what I actually said not what you've presumed I said ;) .

I entirely agree with you, bitch away when they do it (but please then stop :D). The confusion is short lived, DVD specifications spread like wild fire over the Internet and as has always happened before it would soon be known.

I said if we had to specifically choose between DD5.1 on it's own or DD5.1 plus DD1.0 from that DD5.1 I'd pick the latter.

If you had to pick between DD5.1 and DD1.0 from 5.1 which would you choose?

I don't know. I've never examined that in detail. I wouldn't watch a movie that is only available with those audio options.

One speaker, 6. It'd still be a fucked up soundtrack

So why not go back and ask for original mono?

I don't think contractually it's always that simple.
Ivan Drago wrote:One speaker, 6. It'd still be a fucked up soundtrack.
I never said it won't be fucked up, please re-read what I actually said.

The problem when people make sweeping statements that it's fucked up end of discussion is it doesn't allow for any leeway. I've already said a few times none of it is acceptable just that it's better to have (IMO) the choice of both then just DD5.1.

The reality is often the best looking DVD only has 5.1 or 5.1 + A Downmix on offer. Are you therefore going to completely ignore the film entirely on the hope a better version comes along?

You've seriously never watched a HKL DVD? Most of them are 5.1 only. Fair enough then if that's true.

Well, FS remix = fucked up. I've not heard one that has swayed my judgement. I wont buy it

We're speaking (or at least I am) about FS star remixes. I have nothing against 5.1 format. Not that much even for presenting mono films in 5.1. It's the new sound effects some companies, mainly FS, add to their soundtracks that I don't accept.

I own about 40 HKL's. And no, I haven't bought a single one of those from them disc that have FS remixes only (of course some of their media asia tracks are also tweaked, but that's like a half dozen, usually rather unnoticable, new effects compared FS's 500 new effects).

We were never were talking about FS specifically :D . I said I'd prefer both 5.1 and Mono from 5.1 and mentioned nothing of specific providers.

I cannot usually tell if foley has been added (Terminator sounds ace) but it does piss me off when effects are artificially stuffed around each of the 5.1 speakers or when companies like Anchor Bar or Fortune Star set the volume so loud it drowns out the centre speaker.

What is the point of mono from 5.1? What good does it do having the option when they've screwed up already

Because it's better than the same 5.1 remix . . .

Oh forget it, you wouldn't understand.

No, it's the same damn sound, just compressed to mono. I see what you mean in theory but it makes precious little differance in actuality

In the case of Royal Tramp, the 5.1 remix sounded pretty natural to my ears. (Although I did notice a few punches). Another thing I hate about FS remixes is that the music is so damn low. Thankfully that isn't the case here.

Thank you then.

I completely disagree that it makes little difference but thanks anyway.

I'm a big knob, then.
Doesn't bother me.

Can we get back on topic, folks ?
We've been having this "5.1 vs Mono" argument for years, and it has never lead to anything constructive.
I used to be "the man who loves the movies you hate".
Now I'm just "that weird french guy with a cat avatar who comes to BnB once a year for no reason and then disappears again".

What I was originally saying was different but anyway it's not important.

Back on topic:

I just picked up "Dog Bite Dog 2 Disc DD SE" for £4.33 delivered from Amazon.co.uk Market place (but it came from America). It was listed as "Used - Like New" but I was pleasantly surprised to see it was brand new and still sealed 8)

Thanks.

Phew it's uncut and has Mandarin after all. You can see in the screen captures it's not English DTS as one part of the review says.

Pointless re-title aside this looks like a strong DVD and easily the best version for English speakers worldwide. When I eventually get around to watching my HK 2 Disc LE I may upgrade.

There is a review of the HK DVD here (no English subs on the extras):

Ironic that the DD cover art is the only image to order Miss Zhang's name correctly.

It's NOT Ziyi Zhang(!)

That's a personal pet peeve of mine as well. But it's going to get much worse. In about 10 years, I don't think anyone's name will be written correctly.
