Totally agree. If anything, the prequels should've been made to conform to the originals.

In some cases I don't care though, like with non-humanoid creatures (except Yoda in the original cuts). Like with the upcoming re-release of Ep.1 (next year prolly, for the 30th anniversary) - I couldn't careless about the Yoda glove puppet being replaced with CGI. The Ep.1 puppet sucks compared to the classic trilogy one and looks constipated. Plus I hate Ep.1, it's boring as fuck.

Lucas on the O-OT re-releases. What a prick.
Source wrote:Until then, he says he's curious to see what the reception will be for the upcoming limited-edition DVD release of the three original "Star Wars" films (see "Three Original 'Star Wars' Films (Finally) Coming To DVD — But Not For Long"). "It's just the original versions, as they were," Lucas said. "We didn't do anything to it at all. But we're not sure how many people want that."

You might say quite a few, considering how many fans were angered by the digitized, expanded updates of episodes IV, V and VI. Lucas claims he's not re-releasing the originals to appease fans, but rather to bate them. "Now we'll find out whether they really wanted the original or whether they wanted the improved versions," he said. "It'll all come out in the end."

I'm betting this was his plan all along - if no one buys his bad non-anamorphic laserdisc transferred versions, he can say no one wanted them

Send an e-mail to the address below that was provided by Lucasfilm as the place to send thoughts on the upcoming DVD release, and let them know exactly what you think in no uncertain terms.
Be very firm and to the point, but keep it clean, that will give the best results. They can still change their minds and give the original trilogy a proper transfer to DVD, it's up to the Star Wars fans to see to it they get the message *loud and clear*.

publicity@lucasfilm.com

I dont know why I'm doing this, I'm not even as big a fan as some of you ;)

What a dumbass he'll lose sales NOT because no one wants them but because they'll look bloody awful.

It's unusual for Lucas to even listen to fans.

p.s - There's an Ep1 re-release? Yeah probably.

This is the e-mail you get if you write to them, basically a "fuck off" or "you should be glad what we give you" e-mail.
I wanted you to know how much we appreciate the passion and enthusiasm you have for Star Wars, and thank you for sharing your concerns about our upcoming DVD release.

The DVDs being released in September will contain two versions of Star Wars: Episodes IV, V and VI – the Special Editions (which represent George’s vision of the movies) and the first versions, which will be included as bonus material. We hoped that releasing those “original” movies on a bonus disc would be a way to have some additional fun with the debut of the movies as individual DVDs. We certainly did not want it to become a source of concern or frustration for any of our fans.

As you may know, an enormous amount of effort was put into digitally restoring the negatives for the Special Editions. In one scene alone, nearly 1 million pieces of dirt had to be removed, and the Special Editions were created through a frame-by-frame digital restoration. The negatives of the movies were permanently altered for the creation of the Special Editions, and existing prints of the first versions are in poor condition.

So many fans have requested the original movies, we wanted to find a way to bring them to you. But since these movies do not represent George's artistic vision, we could not put the extraordinary time and resources into this project as we did with the Special Editions. The 1993 Laserdisc masters represented the best source for providing the original versions as DVD bonus material. Although these are non-anamorphic versions, they do preserve the original widescreen composition of the movies.

We want you to be aware that we have no plans – now or in the future – to restore the earlier versions.

We hope you will understand our decision and, again, want to let you know how much we appreciate your interest and enthusiasm.

Sincerely,
Lynne Hale

Do not represent his vision my ass - didnt the O-OT represent his vision for 20 years?
In poor condition the originals may be (?) thats no excuse to not make them anamorphic. All of the bonus features on the Phantom Menace DVD were anamorphic. So the fact these are "bonuses" is not an excuse to fob us with crap transfers.

Basically the publicity person is saying its all or nothing.
I havent seen the 2004 SE's before (only the 1997 ones - and even then not Empire).

The 1997 Empire had the most subtle changes.

It's funny how small companies can release perfectly remastered anamorphic dvds of 1970's sexploitation movies... And Lucas can't do the same with Star Wars... :?

He can, we all know this, he is just being silly for some reason :)

You can release an anamorphic dvd of anything, no matter what the title is, hell you can even encode old Videos anamprhically. It just takes a few minutes more work for Lucas and co and in that time they would loose millions in profit I guess

Exactly Romero. Even if they left all the dirt and grain there anamorphic would be something.

It's not unexpected is it but to be fair they have replied with an informative and useful reply instead of the usual 1 line replies. It's not what we wanted to hear but at least it's an answer.

Using a LD Master is really a bad idea though. I have those LD Masters (of sorts) and the quality is far, far inferior to the 2004 DVDs.
and the first versions, which will be included as bonus material.
As we know this says it all. A piece of history has been relegated to an extra.
The negatives of the movies were permanently altered for the creation of the Special Editions
BOLLOCKS! While I'm sure Lynne believes this I don't. There is no way Lucas would lose without a trace the original negatives. They've made his career.

The fact is they don't want to put any effort into this. Fine I won't buy it, as many others won't either. Nice on Lucas!

Actually I belive that Lucas messed with them. He hates the originals. He's crazy and rich and stupid - I wouldn't put it past him

Well there will be cinema prints somewhere in perfect condition for such a big film :) he could ask someone to borrow him them, problem solved. Saying he changed the master prints forever is crap, many dvd companies use cinema prints and produce perfect dvds still.

Yuck using cinema prints would look even worse and those aren't going to be anamorphic so why bother? Anamorphic is a home cinema process.

There are decent prints in private collections and I belive in important national archive. The point is; he doesn;t want to see these get any sort of release

I think Lynne is saying they will use the masters that were used to make the laserdiscs, and then transfer them to DVD, not use actual laserdisc transfers, so they will look better than LD.

Yes, but my point was there are prints out there, so he cannot say he destroyed them all :) some are bound to be in perfect condition, if not for dvd for future HD release where more resolution will matter far more.

Lynne Hale is the person who wrote the publicity reply e-mail.

BTW, here's the thread over at HTF - apparently Lucasfilm is reading this thread and taking note of it. People posting include Robert Harris, who has restored titles like Lawrence of Arabia:
