Aye we don't get movies like this anymore. Modern rom coms are pretty cheesy but this one is more traditional with some really funny dialogue.

Meg Ryan used to be so hott...

Johnny and the Bomb (TV series) - 3/5

Not bad so far but it seems a lot of the book has been speeded up or cut, and while Zoe Wannamaker is well cast as mysterious bag lady Mrs. Tachyon, the child actors are fairly mediocre, and most of the witty dialogue seems to be missing

THE NAKED GUN - 4.5/5

Extremely silly, but very funny gag filled spoof that had me laughing out loud in places

There are loads of top scenes, like the one where Frank is asking Nordberg for information you mentioned Mark, the one where Frank and the witness keep passing money between each other when requesting information ("maybe this will help...") and I also love the bit when Frank gets into a random car and tells the driver to "Follow that black car" or something like that, and it turns out to be someone taking their driving test

To me "Beast Cops" is a film that single-mindedly steers towards its great showdown. I love the dialogues between Anthony Wong and Michael Wong.

Pirates of the Ka-rib-beean (well to Americans at least) 3/5

Not anywhere as good as first time I watched it.

Still a good swashbuckler, just a lot more average than when I watched it at the flicks.

Yeah, I felt the same way after watching it on DVD at home compared to when I had seen it at the cinema.

Seven Swords - 4/5

Visually stunning, epic movie. The production design, costumes and music were all fantastic. The battle/action scenes were good (when they came, I wasn't expecting an out and out action picture) and pretty brutal.
However, I thought the film was a bit slow in places, like near the start (not that it was boring) but fatally, that there were large chunks of story/character development missing.

As the film went on the pacing got much better.
The story reminded me of the master Akira Kurosawa's classic "Seven Samurai".
IMO the movie should have been shot in Mandarin rather than Cantonese.

The movie was shot in both languages, hence you have dubbing on both language tracks.

Also, the film is Tsui Hark's tribute to "Seven Samurai".

The Hidden Blade - 4/5
Yoji Yimada's next samurai drama after "Twilight Samurai". While it can't reach the same 4.5/5 I had given "Twilight", it is a very decent drama with one of the most realistically shot swords duel I have seen.

Thanks. Thats what I thought (about SS).
Don't you find it annoying that whenever the characters spoke Korean, the subtitles would come up "blah blah blah (Korean)" rather than just translating them? (This was on the Cantonese track BTW).

I mostly loved it.

I thought one piece of music in SS reminded me of a similar one from Ridley Scott's "Gladiator".

As for the Korean parts... I thought it was great that they subtitled them. Have I got you wrong thinking that you wanted the Korean parts to be dubbed into Chinese?

No I didnt mean that, I would still want the Korean parts in Korean - what I meant was that whenever a Korean part was spoken, there would be an indicator in the subtitles like this ...... (Korean) to tell us what language it was, when IMO they didn't need to.

I thought the pacing of the film, while slow at the start, got much better as the film went on.
Also, is the muted colour palette intentional? Some of the faces at the beginning (especially the Fire Wind bandits, like the lead woman who orders the executions) are pratically grey

The Evil Dead 3/5

I bought the book of the dead edition when it was firsr released but.....I only just watched it yesterday. Although I caught a portion of the movie when it was on TV or sky some time ago, this is the first time I had actually seen the film in its entirety! Whilst the low budget nature of the movie is now strikingly apparent (especially the plasticine effects at the end!), I thought it was a very cool splatterfest.

Despite the numerous "jump" moments, I didn't find it particularly frightening, and the most disturbing moment is definitely the sexual assault by a tree. I was surprised to find Bruce Campbell giving a relatively earnest performance, but I supposed it was to be expected since this was before Bruce began to parody himself.

Although I said it wasn't scary, I can only imagine the experience of watching it in the cinema or back in the day on vhs. I reckon it would have been an exhilarating experience. Evil Dead 2 is much better though.
